Yeah, this conversation is absurd. In order for a fight to be Hagler/Hurns, it better be the best UFC fight you've ever seen, and most likely the best you'll ever see.
Do you remember a thread from years ago -- P&G -- about inventions? Someone said they'd invent vacations on a blimp and we endlessly quoted Skytanic? I saw Skytanic a few months ago and started laughing when I remembered that thread. Most fun I've had on here

Ngannou wins by decision due to his wrestling. WTF?
That was embarrassing by Gane in the 5th round. I didn’t listen to the scores because I was disgusted. If he only lost by 1 rd; that’s on him. He had the 5th round won and either went for a footlock or let himself get scissor swept and then tried the heel hook. Even after all that stupidity he still could have used his position to stand up. Francis looked like shit walking into the cage; something wasnt right with him.

Yup, it was especially dumb because, as good as Francis was getting take downs, he was too tired and too inexperienced to do anything on the ground. Cyril could have just laid on top of him for 3 minutes and won the fight.

Cyril has to be the dumbest very talented fighter I’ve seen in forever. No adjustments. No strategy. Horrible decision making. By the guy who was clearly more talented and in shape.

Has he ever faced adversity before? I dunno. Maybe he’s just dumb in the ring. But wow. How weird.

With that skill level in that weight class, possibly not much. In 4 years he shot up the ranks undefeated to a fight with Ngannou. This is a teachable moment for him, like Stipe #1 was for Ngannou. I forgot how graceful he looked in the octagon (as a fucking HW), and am looking forward to seeing him fight in the future.

I'm just amazed Ngannou was able to win that with all those ligaments jacked up. Gane really couldn't have asked for a better spot and just didn't.

Fun card tonight on PPV. Izzy and Bobby Knuckles will rematch in the main event. I think the blue print to beat style bender was written by Blazowski but I don't know if Whittaker has the wrestling chops plus there will be no size advantage. One fight where I wish both guys could walk away the winner.

In the semi main event, Derrick Lewis will fight Tai Tuivasa. Two heavyweights who just love to bang. I think the fight is above Tuivasa's level but his aggressive style could work if he can land a big blow.

The Cannonier vs Brunson winner should be next in line to fight the main event winner.

Not being a fan of either Covington or Masvidal, I find myself oddly invested and looking forward to Saturday's main event. The coverage so far has been great. I *think* Covington is the much better fighter and will wear Masvidal out to a decision but the hatred each have for the other makes for some good theater.

In the semi main event, Fiziev is out after testing positive for covid. There are a few fighters that have volunteered to face Dos Anjos. Islam Makachev, Renato Moicano, and Tony Ferguson have all said they could do it. Islam would be the most exciting matchup and push this card from below average to a standard PPV.

Former champ Cain Velasquez held on attempted murder charges after shooting at a man who allegedly molested an underage relative.

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/report-cain-velasquez-allegedly-shot-023043632.html
Ugh. No.
While the alleged victim of sexual abuse’s identity is being withheld due to their status as a minor, the accused man is Harry Eugene Goularte, 43, who lives in San Martin, Calif. at a home-daycare business run by his mother.
Even worse:
court documents reveal the alleged abuse of Velasquez’s family member may have occurred “100 times.”
Rumor is it was Cain's child. If true...I understand.

What I don’t understand is why he would want to use a gun when you would think he’d gain much more satisfaction in beating the guy with his hands given his background. He maybe could even have gotten away with a simple misdemeanor too.

Sounds like it was a drive by. Maybe he thought he could get away with murder?

Pretty surprised at the amount of people I'm seeing who seem to think it is okay for Cain to go out as a vigilante and shoot the wrong guy.

This Paddy Pimblet kid is fun. His fight today was an event. Has a lot of early-Conor energy. He obviously has a long way to go to match that kind of rise to fame, but he has the confidence and gift of gab part down.

Edit: But he has a very Turpin family haircut.

He’s going to get killed the second he faces someone ranked. He gets hit way too much.

Great card tonight though. Aspinal looked really impressive.

Agree with all of this. Aspinall is pretty damn quick for a big man.

I'm not sure what it is with Pimblet, but like O'Malley, when I watch him fight I want to see him get smashed.

This ufc Ohio card has been great!

Kara France/Askaurov and Brown/Barbarena were awesome to watch and two very different fights.

Brown/Barbarena is a foty candidate

Do Bronx missed weight by half a pound and is stripped of his title. Fight will go on and if Gaethje wins, he's the champ. If Gaethje loses, the title remains vacant. Rumors on twitter that the hotel scale where everyone is staying was recalibrated last night and some fighters found out they were two pounds off. Sounds unlikely, but who knows.

Oliveira has had problems on the scale before.

Takes a little shine off of the PPV. I It sucks. I'm rooting for Gaethje, but I'm a fan of both guys. Do Bronx was a likeable champ.

I mean, if you’re not traveling with your own scale for a fight - never mind a title fight - you’re taking risks. But you’re right - both very likeable fighters and it’s a shame the fight won’t be what it might’ve been.

Couldn't they have also just calibrated the scale on their own? It's not rocket science. I'd want that done every time I weighed in leading up to a fight no matter what scale I was using. I agree that it's probably better to have your own, trusted scale with all that money and a title on the line, but calibration is the least they could have done. I bet they start doing it now.

Exactly what I had in mind and why I doubt it is true, at least for Oliveira. I just don't think the champ who has been around a long time and missed weight more than once would trust his belt and career to a hotel scale.

To be clear, the twitter thing I saw was about other fighters on the card complaining about it. I haven't seen anything from Oliveira's camp to say that was the problem.

Edit:

Tweets are embedded in this article. Two of them talk about a scale issue.

First reports are always wrong. Apparently it wasn't a hotel scale, but the backstage scale that fighter's use before going out for the official weigh in on stage. And it was .5 off, not 2 pounds.

Details here:
https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2022/05/ufc-274-charles-oliveira-scale-questioned-half-pound-miss-costs-title

Fighters were told that morning and most were able to adjust. Really sucks for Do Bronx.

I'm curious if scales are managed by the UFC or the sanctioning commission. I would think the commission would control all that in order to try and prevent shenanigans, but I don't know how it works.

I have a buddy fighting on the card. I'm sure he's busy now, but I'll reach out to him after the fights and find out the story.

Fwiw, he weighed 157 after his weight loss routine the night prior to weigh in (think he was 166 when he touched down in the city). He expected to be 155.5 - 156 for his fight, and he weighed in at 155.5.

Maybe the scales were off .5 pounds, but doesn't seem to be the case. Again, I'll talk to him after the fights and ask. I'm curious.

Pat Barry lost that fight for Rose.

Awful cornering that must have been rooted in the fight prep. just an awful game plan and awful fight.

That Rose fight was shocking. She looked like the shorter fighter in there, for all her reach advantage. Just an inexcusable performance by my favorite fighter; especially in a 5 round fight with time to adjust.

The other 2 big fights were amazing, though. Chandler made himself a ton of money last night with that kick and his mic work and Oliveira may be the most impressive fighter in the whole sport right now. He’s like fucking Wolverine with his recovery, and those 3-4 submission attempts leading to the actual choke were some of the most athletic movements I’ve ever seen. Dude looks like he’s in a choreographed movie.

Wow. Dominant performance for Weili. Probable 10-8 on the ground in R1 and then a spinning back fist knocking Joanna out could in R2.

Edit: And Joanna just retired in the octagon.
