Sure but the third was also a coin flip. Especially if Colby’s takedown wasn’t a takedown. I think it was and the round was still close.

Yes, I think the right guy got the decision, no doubt. I’m just a little disappointed. Didn’t think Colby was going to have to almost get finished to start fighting well.

Yeah. Colby was great. Usman just a little greater.

Usman probably fights Edwards if he beats Masvidal. Maybe Jorge fights Colby.

If Edwards beats masvidal I’d do

Usman vs Edwards
Colby vs Jorge
Khamzat vs Burns.

Winner of the Colby/Jorge and Khamzat/burns fight to decide the number one contender.

I had 47-47. Usman won 1 & got a 10-8 in 2, Colby won 3-4-5.
I gave Usman 5, but could have seen this as well.

He does a weird head roll downward after taking punches that makes them look worse than they are. Took me a couple rounds to track that.

Last thing I want to say about this card. Man, Usman is an impressive son of a bitch. His whole modus operandi used to be to try to lay down on top of guys and he has become a ferocious striker. It shows maximum dedication.

This is a good spot. I just rewatched half of 4 and all of 5 and you might be on to something here. Usman's shoulders, traps and neck are ridiculous.

This and Gaethje's development of an actual fight IQ and an ability to implement strategy beyond "stand in the pocket and punch each other until one of us dies" are huge endorsements for the greatness of Trevor Wittman.

I think Colby might be in the old Daniel Cormier spot of being much better than everyone else in the division, but blocked from ever holding the title by an all time great. And Kamaru isn't a fuck up like Jones, so we won't ever see a Colby title. I really want to see Colby fight Burns next, but we'll probably get the Masvidal cringe fest.

I'll post it here in the MMA thread but it could just as easily go in the boxing thread:

https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/lists/fighting-news-triller-announces-rules-and-full-fight-card-of-inaugural-triad-combat-event

Fighters will compete in a triangular ring and under two-minute rounds. The idea is to set professional boxers against professional MMA fighters in an environment that’s “leveling the playing field.”

Like in boxing, only punches will be allowed. No kicks or elbows are permitted in Triad Combat. What does differs from boxing, is that this new fighting style will allow clinching and striking from the clinch.
What do you guys think of the ruleset? Does it level the playing field between boxers and mma fighters enough to make those fights competitive and (presumably) more interesting?

The first lineup looks interesting. I won't buy it, but I'm curious how it turns out.

Boxers know how to clinch and strike in the clinch. We just have to be more subtle about it. The triangle thing seems dumb and weird. Otherwise, I think the MMA guys get killed unless there is clever matchmaking.

This sounds like punch only Thai Boxing in a triangle ring. They should at least allow elbows. I’m assuming they are using boxing gloves. I’ll watch any kind of of combat sport but I can’t say I’m excited about this.

Triangle ring? That's super gimmicky. I suppose it will make it easier to get trapped in a corner. Less space to move around in too.

I have to say, it seems difficult to come up with rules that both level the playing field and don't make just like a different form of boxing. I suppose that makes sense since MMA has so many more modes of attack and it's unreasonable to expect boxers to effectively learn other disciplines in a short amount of time. What pure boxer would ever agree to allow kicking or wrestling?

San Shou already was a thing. Cung Le was good at it. It was kickboxing plus takedowns but very limited time on the ground I think.

This makes sense.

I'm guessing it will be a lot easier to find MMA guys who will kid themselves that their boxing is good enough to try this than it will be to find boxers willing to get sliced up by elbows. But it would even things out a lot more.

Truly useful clinch striking is a bit of a niche ability in MMA. And even then, it’s mostly the province of Muay Thai practitioners who can elbow and knee (think Silva kneeing Franklin). It doesn’t move the needle here very much, IMHO.

Couture is one of the few non-Thai stylists that had masterful clinch striking because of his high-level background in greco with solid boxing training.

Ridiculous old man strength in his hands, too. Couture is one of those guys who was 40 in his 20s.

Ha

Masvidal/Edwards is off because of an undisclosed Masvidal injury. I wonder if he skips Leon and goes straight for the Colby/Ultimate Fighter coach payday.

Rumors of Khamzat wanting the fight. If he goes and and beats Leon, he may be next for Usman

I'd love to see Chimaev get that fight. I think Masvidal/Edwards is a good fight but if Masvidal wins who is getting the next title fight? Masvidal/Colby have already lost to him twice and no one else really has much of an argument to get a shot. Maybe Luque? But I don't see that fight selling all that well.

That is the fight that should happen. Winner can get Usman.

Edwards won't do it. He doesn't want to risk his spot and thinks he should get Usman now. He's good and has a streak, but I think he picks his fights maybe a little too carefully. Good business, but it doesn't build much excitement for a title fight with a guy who had beaten him before.

The end of his Diaz fight was funny. Nate should have finished him instead of bullshitting around.

Yair and Holloway was a great fight. I think the atmosphere of the apex hurt it but if it was on a PPV it would be a classic with the crowd reactions.

Yair showed a lot of heart. Max was class as usual.

Penas boxing looked terrible in the first round. Nunez looked tired and was easily taken out of her game plan.

I’m baffled by that fight. It felt like rousey holm, except you understood that mismatch immediately.

You know, I looked at the lineup and the only fights that interested me were on the prelims. The Hall fight early and the Cruz fight on the regular.

Figured O'Malley was fighting a stiff, that Cody cut too much weight, that Pena had no chance, and Do Bronx a small one. Just checked the PBP and saw probably the greatest upset in MMA history, maybe. I'm shocked.

Nunes has looked increasing worse each fight. Coming in puffier. Getting gassed earlier.

I really like both Poirier and Oliveira but I think Dustin’s stiffness may hurt him here; if he wins it’ll be by eating a lot of early offense and letting his durability carry him to victory in the late rounds.

MMA Hagler Hearns
Calm down, wasn’t even the most Hagler-Hearns MMA fight this year. Not that there’s been one. Ever. Profaner. Maybe that Dan Severin fight where he just face punches that giant dude for 2 straight minutes out the gate.

It's getting hard to follow the UFC but I tuned in for Cruz, Nunes, and the main event. Something looked off w Nunes huh? I didn't hear her post fight tho. I'm thrilled for Pena, but I'm ready for bad bitch Shevchenko back in there. Thought she beat Nunes at least once

My post was after round one thinking we were going to get more of that. Chandler Gaethje recently was good but need champions for it to be Hagler Hearns

Yeah Chandler Gaethje was what I had in mind, but you’re right about champions - well, all-timers. And yes @Vinho Tinto that’s the fight I meant.

I can't think of a Hagler Hearns, but the closest thing IMO is Stephen Bonner vs Forrest Griffin. I could be glorifying it in my head tho

That was just a brawl, imo. Those guys kind of suck in terms of elite skills. Tough guys and built the UFC with that fight in a big spot so all respect to them. I think of that as a less skilled Gatti/Ward. Hagler/Hearns is more like if Max fought Oliviera now but both of those guys are kind of the Hearns.

I have a double bias here, but Hagler and Hearns were both top 5 all time guys in their natural divisions in a 150-year old sport. I can’t think of anything that would be a parallel in UFC yet. Maybe if Khabib and GSP had an all-time classic at welterweight I could squint and see it.

I didn't know Hagler and Hearns were all timers. Agreed Bonnar and Griffin are... decent fighters, not championship caliber. What about Rory vs Lawler?

Yeah, this conversation is absurd. In order for a fight to be Hagler/Hurns, it better be the best UFC fight you've ever seen, and most likely the best you'll ever see.

This one is mostly for @luckiestman, if he hasn't seen it yet.

https://www.bloodyelbow.com/2021/12/16/22838758/anthony-bourdain-anonymously-posted-in-bjj-forum-years-brazilian-jiu-jitsu-reddit-martial-arts-news

In addition to being very public with his love of BJJ, we now know that Bourdain was also engaging in the sport’s culture in a more understated manner. Rolling Stone has confirmed that Bourdain frequented the reddit community r/bjj under the name NooYawkCity.
Funny stuff:

My favourite comment is what he wrote in response to a video of actor/martial artists Steven Seagal.

“Seagal is a ‘deadly mofo’ if you get between him and the all you can eat pasta bar,” wrote Bourdain. “The hair is definitely deadly though. A wad of that Dynell weave comes undone during a fight with Lightning Chunks of Death and you could choke.

Mauro is the best in the game.

Also, gonna do a TD dance on UFC right now - boxing wins again.
