This just sucks. I love this sport so much but I don’t want it to become like boxing where every big fight will have a dark cloud over the event because someone might be crooked.

This isn’t new. There have been a lot of awful decisions.

I mean, just because a dude is moving laterally while another is coming forward doesn’t mean the former isn’t in control. That’s how Ali an Holmes both fought. Reyes was totally in control the first 3 rounds, even if he was moving around.
Exactly my thoughts. We're just looking at two different styles / strategies. That's all.

Yeah, look, penalize a guy for going backwards - like Jones did every time he got caught. Giving points to the guy plodding forward over the guy taking angles and circling up on his toes while landing more shows an amateurish understanding of fighting.

Another way I think about it is, fighting is like dancing. You can't have two leads in a dance. That doesn't mean the person who doesn't take lead is doing something wrong.

Just mechanically, unless you’re in with a much bigger puncher, which Jones wasn’t tonight, the guy with the lateral movement is actually dictating the action. The guy coming straight ahead has to continually reorient himself to deal with the angles. That’s why Reyes was getting off first and quicker.

I don’t even necessarily agree with this. All things equal I vote for the guy coming forward. BUT all things were not equal in rd 3, Reyes landed more shots but you could land more shots and lose a round....The thing is, I had Reyes landing BOTH more shots and better shots. The only thing Jones had was coming forward.

The only things that doesn’t make me really mad about this is Bones wins that fight if they keep fighting. I get those are not the rules and I am mad that Reyes got robbed but not as mad as I could get. It is more of a simmering rage than a rolling boil of rage.

I actually don't think we're that far apart. I said the same thing last page. If the fight is close, then sure, take octagon control into account. But for me, it wasn't even close to being a consideration in rounds 1-3. As you point out, Reyes owned Jones in those rounds while backing up.

I started watching religiously around 197. This is the worst big fight decision I’ve seen.

That’s awesome that you remember the number like that. As for me, I started with UFC 1 and quit Tae Kwon Do shortly thereafter for BJJ.

Edit: They changed all the rules to favor strikers now, so maybe I should have stuck with striking arts????

Y’all are wild calling lateral movement backing up. Especially because Reyes was mostly southpaw against Jones being conventional. If he stood right in front of him, Jones would’ve eaten him up with straight rights.

The only other title fight this bad that I have watched was GSP - a super juiced up Big Rig Hendricks. But that was at least a slightly defensible split, and didn't feature any crazy 4-1 cards. In both cases the champ won after winning the fifth round.

. conor lost the 2nd diaz fight.
Connor won 1&2 going away and that 4th round in the second Diaz fight was perhaps Connor's greatest, or at least guttiest, performance in UFC. I can see an argument for giving Diaz a 10-8 in round 3, which he probably would have gotten under the new scoring rules, if any of the idiot judges followed them, so perhaps it should have been a draw, but Connor won that fight.

I scored the fight that just happened Felder/Kiwi 2/4/5 for Felder. 2 judges had it the other way.

Finally watched the Jones-Reyes fight for the first time, on mute. I expected to be more disappointed, but had Reyes winning 1 and 2 handily, Jones winning 4 and 5, and Reyes somewhat narrowly edging Jones in round 3. The judge who gave Jones 49-46 should never sit ringside again, but 48-47 in favor of the champ doesn’t enrage me. It’s wrong, but not insane.

UFC 248 tonight. Not an incredibly stacked card, but it should be a fun co-main event. Stylebender and Yoel Romero is a very curious matchup for sure. But I'm really looking forward to seeing Zhang Weili in the octagon again where she can seek revenge for Joanna's crude China/coronavirus jokes. She's very humble, and I find her extremely likable despite the fact that she doesn't speak English very well yet. And when you watch her workouts, she's looks like an absolute beast. She's one of those women who I would not want to find myself in the ring with.

Main Card
Weight class
Middleweight Israel Adesanya (c) vs. Yoel Romero
Women's Strawweight Zhang Weili (c) vs. Joanna Jędrzejczyk
Lightweight Beneil Dariush vs. Drakkar Klose
Welterweight Neil Magny vs. Li Jingliang
Welterweight Alex Oliveira vs. Max Griffin
Preliminary Card (ESPN)
Bantamweight Sean O'Malley vs. José Alberto Quiñónez
Lightweight Mark Madsen vs. Austin Hubbard
Middleweight Rodolfo Vieira vs. Saparbek Safarov
Middleweight Gerald Meerschaert vs. Deron Winn
Early Preliminary Card (ESPN+)
Featherweight Giga Chikadze vs. Jamall Emmers
Bantamweight Danaa Batgerel vs. Guido Cannetti

I feel like UFC cards are super top heavy lately. Like besides the main events and the last fight of the undercards, they’re not throwing a lot out there. Used to be 3-5 fights I’d look forward to on every card.

Cowboy Oliveira won, but the judges had it split. It should have been unanimous.

Dariush is another good jiu jitsu guy but he got KTFO pretty bad in one of the last fights I remember him in

I’m glad Joanna stopped the stupid feinting she was doing against Rose, but she keeps putting her head down in exchanges.

Zhang is really impressive.

This is the best women’s division fight in any organization I remember seeing

Nobody’s been at the brink, so it lacks that narrative drama, but otherwise this has more action and skill than any fight I can think of.

No clue how to score it. 2-2 sounds as good as anything.

What’s crazy is that Rose steamrolled Joanna.

Heart says Joanna won, but I think Zhang gets it.

Joanna was getting hit hard early and was not wearing it at all. Then .... every part of her face blew up.

Thought they were going to give it to Joanna because she had more volume and seemed to do slightly better in the clinch. But I think they made the right decision.

So long as there were no 4-1 cards, you can’t complain. Joanna did more body work, but Zhang hit harder to the head and that always scores better.

The women’s fights fuck with me. I really feel bad someone had to lose in a way I normally don’t. I really feel bad for Joanna...she put it all out there and it was super close.

You guys want a nice lucky tidbit?

The current head coach of Penn State wrestling beat Cormier about 6 or 7 times in college and beat Yoel in the 2004 Olympics

Now he’s watching them on TV from Happy Valley.

Dont think he’s sweating it

Cael Norman Sanderson (/ˈkeɪl/ KAYL; born June 20, 1979) is an American former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler, and is the current head coach of the Pennsylvania State University wrestling team. As a wrestler, he won an Olympic gold medal and four NCAA Division I individual titles. In 2002, Sports Illustrated recognized his college career as the second most impressive feat in college sports history.[1]

......
Also has 8 NCAA titles as a head coach (he was undefeated as a collegiate wrassla)

Oh that dude. Yeah he’s amazing. Had no idea you were talking about him.

Man, 20 years of lifting and not one day looking as good as Yoel Romero.
