Bonucci is so important to this Juventus side. His impact already this year has been huge. He can bypass an entire entrenched side with one sweep of his leg like he did there.

Not a bad finish by Dybala, either.

It's also a nice luxury to be able to rest Chiellini in a Champions League match, even when three center backs are starting. Hopefully this match and the Ronaldo suspension can help spark Dybala too.

Valencia-United looks like a dull match between two mid-table sides, which is exactly what it is.

Madrid seems to be lacking a big guy with good technical skills and a strong shot who could finish and make things happen in the box.

The CSKA Moscow keeper just got sent off with a second yellow for dissent after a Madrid player missed a header. The CSKA keeper apparently wanted a foul called. It was the dumbest dissent ever, since the shot had been missed and it was a free kick for CSKA with extra time having expired. If I've seen a player do something more stupid for a sending off I certainly can't recall it.

73 percent of the possession but only four shots on goal, on more than their opponents. Say whatever you want about Ronaldo being a volume scorer but at least he can put some pressure on the keeper.

Despite this being a big result for CSKA, losing Akinfeev is a big blow for their upcoming match against Roma. He's their best player and perhaps the most underrated keeper in the world.

It was a weird situation, he actually got awarded two yellows inside 10 seconds of each other, starting at the 1:00 mark

Agreed Afinkeev had no reason to even mention anything, but unless he said something racially-charged or similarly heinous there doesn't seem to be cause for a second yellow for dissent.

Oh, interesting -- yeah, he makes a punch at the air to get the first one and then as the ref is pulling the card he does it again to get the second. I guess I can see it from the ref's perspective, if one is good for one a second is good for a second but they were so close in time that it seems like it should be one dissent. Still, really stupid. Why was he so angry about a shot that missed the goal?

McKennie starting on the right side of a back three for Schalke today.
Just picked up a stream of this game to play in the background while I'm doing work, but at first glance he looks like he's actually playing a box-to-box role, not defense.

McKennie SCORES in the 88th minute to give Schalke a 1-0 lead in Moscow. Header off a corner.

Dembouz sitting for Barca. Arthur coming in for him in MF in a 4-3-3.

MaTS
Alba-Lenglet-Pique-Semedo
Rak-Busi-Arthur
Couts-Luisito-Dios

For Spurs, it's the 4-2-3-1 with Wanyama and Winks in the MF 2, and Lucas-Lamela-Son in the MF 3.

Can I use gamethread space to beg Zoso (whose posts are always excellent) to stop using “Dembouz” and “Couts” because I die of cringe every time? Posted with absolutely no ill will or malice, I love reading his thoughts, it’s more like helping a friend who decides to get into wearing trilbys

Dembouz is an accepted nickname and starting to grow on me. Couts is just convenient shorthand. I'm really just looking for shorthand and am willing to take suggestions. PT and OD?

Weird injury there for Keita. Hope it just tightened up and it's not too serious

I'm using Bleacher Report Live for this game at $2.99. I wanted to give it a shot and I'm working from home with a slow afternoon. I probably won't get another group stage game ($2.99 seems steep per game) but it's worked great so far.

I’m willing to let the wisdom of crowds rule here but I’d personally veto Dembouz in all forms. It’s the same number of letters as Ousmane and Dembele

Plenty of good seats available in Naples.

Watching in an Irish pub in Bratislava if anyone wants to swing by. They’re streaming it here, too, or so I assume by the mouse pointer in the middle of the screen.
