So, what about the kids that transferred away? That could get sticky if they want to go back.

I really hope they let players transfer back if they want to. There were a few players who were rising seniors and redshirt juniors who weren't really able to transfer, or transferred to lower levels, because there aren't any FBS schools that accept more than 60 credit hours (two years worth). Here's the UAB Transfer Tracker .

A bunch of kids quit. They should get a year tacked onto their eligibility. They were decent for a C-USA team and their coach had them going in the right direction. The only positive of all this is that there will probably be a big buzz in town when football is back.

Scheduling will also be interesting, since 3 of their 4 2016 non conference opponents canceled their 2016 games and found replacements already. Kentucky canceled but didn't replace, so maybe they'll be back on the schedule, and of course UMass is looking for home games, that should be an easy fit.

Devon Brown was a rising redshirt junior that transferred to ODU.

Should he want to go back, and they don't play this season, then he burns one of his final 2 years sitting out.

if they transfer back, yeah they should definitely have no wait year either.

ODU only takes 60 credit hours (or equivalent), so either Brown had fewer than 60, he had some classes they wouldn't accept, or he had to forego any credits beyond the 60 (or some combo of the last two). Which would really be a shame. He has two years remaining, so he could definitely do 60 credits in two years. Or if they let players go back to UAB in 2016 and not sit a year, he would still have all the credits he got there plus at least some of the ODU credits. That's sort of what they did when players left schools in New Orleans after Katrina; they went to other schools for a year or a semester and then some went back. edit- gosh I can't spell today.

Yeah--they essentially have no players. It's going to be a hell of a recruiting job getting a team on the field, even for 2016.

I saw a quote from the kid that transferred to Murray St. He said that he had talked to a few guys and doesn't know how many would want to return.

Since they don't have any 2015 recruits, DrewDawg's post got me thinking, could they essentially recruit two classes? and grayshirt any players that can start attending classes in spring 2016? Grayshirts would count as 2015 recruits, of which they could theoretically get up to 25.

Also, I didn't realize the head coach didn't leave. From the few interviews I've seen/read, he seems like a real stand-up guy.

That is theoretically possible...and permitted under the current rules if I read them correctly.

Edit: With one potential caveat.  I believe a greyshirt cannot have been enrolled full time at another institution before transferring.  They either can be not enrolled or enrolled at less than full time.  Each semester they are enrolled full time counts against their 5-year clock.

ESPN article on some of the questions facing UAB: http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12996054/uab-blazers-issues-questions-remaining

According to people familiar with the situation, about 25 to 30 UAB football players are still enrolled at the school. The Blazers can apply for an NCAA waiver to sign more than 25 prospects next February. They also might be able to add up to 25 early enrollees and transfers in January; those players would count toward UAB's 2015 scholarship allotment, which it obviously didn't use.

Sorry, I got the terms mixed up, I was thinking greenshirt, not grayshirt. Greenshirts graduate early from high school or juco in December, and start school and practice in the spring before their freshman season. If a team didn't use the full 25 scholarships from the previous fall, greenshirts can count for the previous year's recruiting. Many teams have a couple greenshirts who fill in scholarships that fall commits didn't follow through on. Usually they are guys who have a good shot at playing as freshmen. I don't think anyone has ever tried to get 20+ greenshirts in a single season, simply because no one passes up that many scholarships in the fall.
