cshea summed it up great as always. For me, with the upper end of the objectionability barometer being Mitch Miller, I can turn a blind eye to Bertuzzi spending too many off days on Youtube / Facebook & Hathaway being an occasionally cheap pain in the ass.

If you include the playoffs, Bertuzzi is now 6-16-22 in 25 games since he came over.

And he is one of those guys who is an effective net front presence. I remember the old conventional wisdom of wanting to have a huge guy in front of the net on offense, but I still have nightmares of the 6'4" Brad Isbister parked there being big, yet completely unable to get his stick on a shot or a rebound. Mark Recchi, by contrast, oridinary to small guy, but fantastic in front of the net. Betruzzi is bigger that Recchi but also has the similar quick reactions needed to make plays from there. Watching him play for the Bruins I struggle to understand why he didn't have more success elsewhere.

His deal is up after this year, right? Is he a pure rental or might we re sign him?

Given the cap ramifications for next year, if they want to retain either Orlov or Bertuzzi, it's a heavy lift that probably involves one or more D-men going out. Even then, it's probably likely they're only able to retain one of the two at most. But if we use Game 4 as a benchmark for next year's roster (effectively assuming Bergeron and Krejci aren't back), 6 out of those 12 forwards are UFA/RFA, and Orlov is the only D-man who is a UFA. And they probably have 6-7M in cap space to work with given the overages that will hit for Bergeron and Krejci this year. My guess is that we probably can't afford either of them, maybe we sign the two RFA forwards in Lauko and Frederic, and then we get a couple Providence call-ups and cheap UFAs to round out the bottom 6, but even that probably requires sending someone out via trade. After next year, the picture is cleaner, once the overages are gone and guys like Reilly and Forbort can come off the books, but next year is going to be tight.

He was but that was the year they had like $30 million in cap space. They've got like $6 million this year and need to fill 6-8 roster spots. They will be trading money out so never say never depending on who is going but I think it's highly unlikely Bertuzzi, Orlov or Hathaway are re-signed.

Aren't they also staring at bonus overages for Bergy and Krejci?

Right didn’t mean to imply they could sign Bertuzzi just that not all rentals are one and done. IIRC it was kind of a surprise that they were able to sign Hall.
