Washington Post: Tua Tagovailoa ends his Alabama tenure, leaving a legacy of winning and of decency

After a “really hard decision,” he said, “I don’t know how I feel right now” except, he did say, “content.”
The way Tagovailoa described it while fielding questions Monday, verification of that could begin only in late winter.

“I don’t think any of the doctors can tell, you know, the foreseeable future,” he told the assembled reporters. “None of the guys rehabbing me can tell that. You know, from what they’ve seen, you know, in New York [which he visited for consultation], everything looks good, but you can’t really tell until the three-month part, or the four-month part.”
I think he made the responsible choice.

Obviously no one wants to be dealing with a serious injury like Tua's, but in some ways it's not the worst thing in the world for him because it virtually ensures that he won't be thrown into the starting lineup immediately by whatever team drafts him and thus will have some time to a bit more slowly get used to the rhythms of an NFL season, etc.

Yes. He'll also have the benefit of NFL medical personnel and, presumably, won't be rushed back onto the field. He can take next year as a paid redshirt year and come back at full strength in 2021. I love this move for him.

At this point, isn’t Tua firmly in the ‘buyer beware’ category with this latest injury/sugery? Hasn’t he also suffered ankle and ACL injuries that required surgical repair or am I misremembering the last two?

Two ankle sprains where he had minor surgery to accelerate his recovery. No ACL tear.

The hip injury is huge. Where he goes in the draft will turn in large part on whether it’s clear by April that he’ll eventually make a full recovery — I doubt he’ll be able to work out, but he’ll presumably share his medicals with interested teams.

Beyond that, the prior injuries will give some teams pause about whether his physique or style of play makes him unusually injury-prone, but I’m guessing any team that’s willing to use a top-10 pick on a guy they haven’t seen work out since dislocating his hip is not going to be deterred by those speculative concerns.

It will be fascinating to see where he goes in the draft given the hip injury. Prior to that, he was a no brainer for just about anyone who had the chance to draft him - at least in the sense that its a defensible pick. Now I wonder if any executives/coaches who have tentative job security decide to shy away from him. On the flip side, teams where the front office and coaching staff are firmly entrenched may well be best positioned to take him.

... or teams where the decision-makers are fucked if they don’t find a QB solution in the next couple of years, and decide that rolling the dice on Tua is a better bet than betting on a Jameis Winston breakout or hoping someone better is available next year.

Miami has 3 first round picks: 5, 18 & 27. Do they take him at 5, knowing they still have two more picks to shore up weaknesses, or let it ride in the hopes that he’s still there at 18? I’m not a betting man, but if I were, I’d bet they take him at 5.
