Triston Casas promoted, Bobby Dalbec demoted

Wow. Dalbec must be crushed, but it's understandable given Hosmer's injury. Is this the end for Bobby D as a Red Sox?
It has to be, at least on dreaming on him being a starter. He's already 27 years old.

He could be a useful bench player though, since he handles LHP well enough.

If I were them, I'd try putting him in the corner OF spots the rest of the month in Worcester, and maybe winter ball somewhere if he's willing.

If he could handle LF/RF in addition to 1B/3B, he could be pretty valuable as a right handed hitter when at least three of those spots will likely be covered by left handed hitters next year.

I like the kid's confidence, but yapping at the ump after 2 (correctly) called strike 3's is not a great look. The first one was paint, but the 2nd one had all kinds of plate.

Did he yap after the 2d? Looked to me like he was confirming where it was.

You don’t see many guys who have been in the majors for 36 hours shaking down the umps. Not going to ingratiate yourself to the umps that way. Conduct unbecoming. Wonder if a veteran player will speak to him.

Park your vitriol please. It certainly looked to me as though Casas was asking the ump about the location.

I watched the game and Casas argued more than I have seen from most rookies with the ump. I'm not saying he was completely out of line but my group of guys watching the game definitely thought he was overstepping. Now some are old school... but GB5 isn't off his rocker... IMO

As ready as he's going to get without seeing MLB pitching. He has close to a 1.000 OPS vs R and is striking out less than 17% of the time. All his issues are vs lefties. And there just isn't enough PA to go around vs L.

On a side note: I wonder if Pedro Castellanos could possibly be the back up 1b next year at some point. He or Dalbec fits better than Hosmer. I guess it's a matter of whether someone prefers contact over power. Pedro has plus raw power and has tapped into some of that in recent years, though. Probably less in game power than you want from a 1b, but has decent enough contact skills and it would be a back up role. He's been a binky of mine since 2017, so I've followed him relatively close. He played the OF all of last year and about a third of the time this year to expand his versatility and possibly find him a role in the majors.

The scouting reports haven't matched the results. He's supposed to be a big K% guy but he hasn't been. He's supposed to have below average contact skills but he's a career .300 hitter. At the very least, I'm guessing he'll get a cup of coffee.
I'd be surprised if Castellanos is on the MLB team. They'll likely bring Arroyo back (arb-eligible)

Casas 1st AB yesterday:
Didn't say a word to the ump the entire AB

2nd AB:
Didn't say a word to the ump

3rd AB vs LHP:
ball 1, nothing said
ball 2, nothing said
foul ball, nothing said
foul ball, nothing said
ball 3, nothing said
foul ball, says something about the count or location, but it was towards the dugout, not the umpire
Strikes out looking, pitch was up and in missing location. Asks ump something (that got the plate? that was a strike?), ump nods.

4th AB vs LHP:
ball 1, nothing said
foul ball, nothing said
strike looking on a breaking ball that fooled him, doesn't look like he said anything
ball 2, nothing said
ball 3, appears to ask ump what the count is (3-2, right?)
strike 3 looking, fastball down and away. On the replay you can see he says "down" as the ball crosses the plate, he thought it was low. Asks ump something, again ump nods.

I didn't see him "argue" once. Players ask the ump where pitches are all the time.

To the top-right, that's the bat he's tossed towards the dugout. To the left, that's Casas, loudly going "oooo!" (or "no") and being demonstrative about it.

This isn't arguing, but it's certainly unbecoming.

Have you been watching these "vets" play the game this season? I've seen plenty their unchecked "error of ways" this summer and would vote to just let the rookie be.

This is the exact at bat I was referring to. As the ball passed by him he said nope and was heading for his walk. When he got rung up he tossed the bat and yelled NOOOO. Pitch was definitely a strike. He DEFINITELY disagreed with the ump and IMO overstepped. I'm not a Casas hater. I think he is a breath of fresh air at first base. But he's not perfect and this was just an example that he has a few more things to learn.

He threw the bat because he thought he walked, guys do that all the time. He says "Oh" because, again, he thought he walked. This is absolutely NOTHING.

Do you have the audio of him doing this, Mr. Zapruder?

At 12:21 seconds you catch a bit of him yelling no... There is your audio.... Yes he tossed his bat because he thought he walked. I didn't mean to infer he tossed it from frustration... he did nonetheless toss the bat. And the pitch was definitely a strike. I'm not trying to make a capital case out of this... he's a great young player than needs to learn things at the major league level, which include how to act towards umpires. Was it egregious, NO. But it did happen. Your condescending tone is unnecessary.

To be fair, the umpire back there had a pretty bad day. He was missing a lot of calls and was very inconsistent at the edges and high-low.

That's not the way I saw it at all. OB and Youk had already been talking about the ump and his very slow strike 3 calls. Then Casas took a close pitch and tossed the bat away because he thought he had gotten ball four. When the ump then rung him up, he made a sour face, but he did not bitch about the call. You're creating a false narrative that just isn't there.

Jesus. I'm sorry I brought it up. I should've known this would fire off a storm of get off my lawn posts and Zapruder film counterparts.

For the record, the only reason I brought it up was because so long as we remain deprived of robot umps, I would prefer our stud rookie not accidentally get himself a reputation for showing up umps. Not because I care about "the right way" or what not, but because unprofessional bastards that many of the non-robot umps are, such a reputation would likely result in some bullshit calls.

My apologies to the entire main board. I should stick to masturbation jokes.

Look prospects are religious icons. It is all we can cling to. They are infallible. I got death threats for suggesting Romeo Langford may not be a first ballot HOFer and that Curry would have a better shooting career than Nesmith. Honestly what proof did I have for either statement? I am sure there is a thread "Where will Lars Anderson's Red Seat be?" in the archives.
Criticize a prospect at your peril.

Now at times, there is a split in the religion of Prospectism, when the prospect is traded. The orthodox increase their opinion of the prospect and invoke St. Bagwell. The reform will fall back on the secular record of Carl Pavano. Interesting to note the orthodox view of Pavano experienced a revival when he signed with the Yankees all but dooming the Red Sox to 86 more years in the wilderness.

I mean I'm not really seeing any evidence of Casas barking at the umpires, even in the video I can't hear anything over the umpire calling the third strike. Admittedly I didn't bring the soundtrack into my audio editor for digital analysis, because the whole episode doesn't merit that sort of analysis. Sort of like the entire thing to begin with.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
SSS Oddities:

Casas, after 10 games and 28 ABs, has 3 hits, two of which are HRs. 6 walks, 10 Ks. And one SB, just for laughs. .586 OPS.

He's also been at least competent at 1B. Which, by contrast this year, looks stellar.

Meanwhile Dalbec has 9 games at AAA for 34 ABs. He's gathered 7 hits, one of which is a home run. 2 walks, 10Ks. .557 OPS.

I wonder, half-seriously, if we could convert Dalbec back into a relief pitcher. I know there isn't much precedent for a late-ish career change like this, but it sort of worked for Matt Bush.

Didn’t it also kinda/sorta work out for Ron Mahay? I mean he wasn’t great, but he had a pretty decent career as a reliever after washing out as an OF.

Or both. Even a mini-Ohtani would be valuable. Half of a platoon and some non-embarrassing innings to rest the bullpen in forgone games. If he's better than that, use him accordingly.

Teach him to use a catchers glove and he could play every single position in the infield. Talk about a super utility player. I absolutely love the idea.

So....
Yesterday Dalbec goes 2/3 with 2 HRs and a BB.
Today, Dalbec goes 2/4 with 2 HRs.
OPS is now .960.

Mahay is the absolute triumph of this approach: a 14 year career as a reliever, getting into 500+ games, with a 120 ERA+, after a brief stint as an OFer.

I really think Dalbec will be released by ST Next year
Not a chance.

A trade maybe: he's arb eligible in 2024 and a FA in 2027, plus he's got two options. He's a legitimate threat to lefties, and can play 1B and 3B in at least non-embarassing way. The downside is that he'll be 28 and has been far more cold than hot in his career, especially against righties.

Some team with an actual pitching coach might think they can get more consistency out of him.

Edit - technically correct, but I had meant to type "hitting."

True. I guess I just meant, "won't be with the Red Sox" next year.
