Let’s go!!!!! It’s not our money, let’s celebrate having a good player without giving up top prospects.

gotta love it. Interesting to see where he plays on D

Interesting. Waiting to see terms but presumably this is much closer to Carlos Correa than Corey Seager.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Huh - color me surprised.

I'm curious as to the numbers - this was Story's big chance for a SS FA pay-day. So it's either a short term show-me contract (or an opt-out) or they backed up the truck. And/or they're preparing to move on from Xander next year.

I'm curious to see what the plan is.

My guess: if X leaves he’s our SS. If X stays he’s our 3B with Devers going full time DH.

Wow this is a major upgrade for the Sox. Not only is he way better than Arroyo (who was adequate), but it improves the team’s IF depth considerably.

After 72 straight hours of constantly refreshing this site and Twitter, it took me a minute to realize that this wasn’t just a fake rumor. Happy to see the move made, though enthusiasm level will be pending the details. Should definitely make the team better this year, though, and definitely a bit more important with Arauz getting hurt.

Yep, Arroyo as a backup is a huge upgrade over Arauz or Sanchez. Well protected now in the event of any extended injury to Bogaerts; and the lineup is strengthened considerably.

Hernandez
Devers
Bogaerts
Martinez
Story
Verdugo
Dalbec
Bradley / (Pham?)
Vazquez

Pretty solid.

Red Sox will lose their second pick in the 2022 draft and $500k from their international pool for signing Story. Red Sox had gained a later pick for losing ERod.

Very happy if no opt outs. The more opt outs, the less happiness.

With the Jud Fabian pick from last year and the comp pick from Edro, they still have 3 picks before the third round even with losing this one

Seems like a great contract from the Sox perspective, even with the opt-outs. I'm not really a huge Story guy; between his elbow issues and his home-away splits as a Rockie I think he comes with some risk, but you can't pass up that kind of value they are getting with this deal.

Two things I will be curious to see are that two of Story's strengths as a player are his defense and baserunning. Moving to second does blunt some value he brings (at least for the season) and I wonder if playing at Fenway and for a historically anti-running team, will impact his overall value.

Voidable option by buying another year... very cool structure.

So how does that work? After year four Story says he wants to opt out, then the Sox have X amount of time to say, nope, we are going to keep you by adding that seventh year?

I don't hate that deal at all, especially if he is willing to play at 2B and it helps his elbow hold up. I have to assume that the medicals came back ok for the Sox to make a commitment of that length, and it gives them a lot of flexibility moving forward with X. Should be a 3-win player most years of this deal, conservatively, and with the soft cap increasing and some of the salaries we've seen, the Sox actually stand to potentially get excess value out of a big FA signing here.

Joel Sherman: Trevor Story is in agreement with the Red Sox: 6 years, $140M. There is a player opt out after year 4. Boston can negate by picking up a 7th-yr option. If so the deal is 7-$160M

I would imagine the deadline to pick up the 7th year option comes before the ability for Story to opt out? But yeah, basically. Pretty innovative deal and nice to see they didn’t grant an earlier opt out which I’m sure Story wanted

Chaim must have felt he needed to respond quickly to the Yankees signing Marwin Gonzalez.

Does this free up Yorke?
Given the X situation this doesn’t lock anything in long-term at 2B but Yorke’s bat may be good enough to sustain him in a corner OF position if he continues current trajectory and 2B isn’t open.

This deal must mean he is in principle willing to play 2B if Xander stays, but if Xander goes we have a SS. Really like the flexibility that gives us. Nice to see a domino fall for us after SoSH was starting to eat itself yesterday!

Hell yea. Great signing, solid contract.

I posted this back in December, but Story played through an elbow injury for the first half of the year and hit .237/.311/.394 (77 wRC+) through June 13. He hit .259/.340/.518 (114 wRC+) afterward, including a 132 wRC+ in his last 30 games.

He would have hit 39 home runs last year — a big jump over the 24 he recorded — had he played all his games in Fenway, according to Statcast.
