MYSTERY TEAM!

Meanwhile.  Gordon Edes just tweeted people who reported the O's deal was a "a guess and not a good one"

Oh no, not the Mystery Team. I'm trying to remember what the trade deadline was like before Twitter...

It's not either/or, but if the Red Sox believe it will be easier to address the rotation through free agency than it will be to build a top of the league offense, it makes sense to use Lester and Lackey to bolster the line up and then look to replace them this winter.

Sure, they may believe that.

But seems odd (to me) that they'd be trading for an offensive prospect they assume can help in the next year or so, while addressing this self-inflicted need for SP through free agency.  Is it realistic that we'd be receiving a prospect that could provide significant offense in 2015 or 2016 the latest?

Possible A's could emrge as a possible mystery team for Jon Lester

The A's, who already acquired Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, are said to have at least some involvement in the Jon Lestery derby, according to people familiar with the talks.
It isn't known what Oakland's chances ar at this point, but they already pulled off one surprise by landing Samardzija and Hammel together in a deal with the Cubs.

Oakland would appear to have about the best depth of starters in baseball as is, but nothing should be put past GM Billy Beane.

An A's connected source said they have "nothing close" at the moment. The deadline is 4 pm EDT Thursday.

If not a prospect who could help by then, prospects who could be used to trade for a bat that could help by then. There are a bunch of paths open to them for compiling a competitive roster for 2015 and the free agent pitchers market is more appealing than the free agent hitters market this winter.

It makes sense to my addled brain, at least.

It would be you opening your paper on the 1st and seeing the list of transactions.

Matt Cain is seeing, or saw Dr. Andrews today, but the Giants hugest problem is hitting over the last 2 months.
Saw this last night, but their rotation is still Lincecum, Bumgarner, Peavy, Hudson and Vogelsong... And they don't really have the prospects for Lester or Lackey.

Not really.  Now he's panicking people by tweeting this:

Which of course people interpreted as Ranuado being called up to start on Friday rather than it being what it was, an adjustment to the Pawtucket rotation.  Shocked that Corsi didn't start a thread about it.

I get it, just seems convoluted to me.

Trade Lester for a big chip, to trade to someone else for a big bat (who may not be entirely cheap), while signing a FA SP to replace Lester (for decent $ I'll assume)... or just sign the guy you know and who has a pretty good track record, and use the SP chips in your system to trade for that big bat.

I hope it all works out.

Reporters were just posting blog items about rumours on specific sports sites. It wasn't *that* different, Twitter just consolidated it a bit.

I'm more imagining the meltdown around here if he tweaks his back or something and can't be traded.

I don't see how the A's can put together a competitive offer for Lester unless there is just no market for him, which doesn't appear to be the case. Their best prospect left over after the deal with the Cubs is probably Daniel Robertson who MLB.com has ranked at 92 in their top 100. That's underwhelming to say the least. I guess they could put a package together around Tommy Milone, but he's a poor man's Lester at best. Looking at his FIP and xFIP in each of the last three years suggests he's a middle to back of the rotation starter and the Red Sox have plenty of young arms like that already.

Where is the match here?

Can they tell him no?  He probably figures he might be going to the NL...

The Sox do have a series in St Louis next week.  Pitchers taking BP couldn't have anything to do with that.  Oh no, of course not.

This is only true if they are confident they can re-sign him. If they aren't willing to meet or exceed the market rate for him, cashing him in for trade chips now makes more sense.

Cafardo now tweeting that the Sox are asking for one MLBer & prospects for Lester.
Which, I mean, I don't really understand.  You're going to limit upside asking for a ML'er.  No one in the hunt it going to give much of anything on the 25 man.

While true, it also makes the free agent pitcher depth kind of irrelevant. If they aren't willing to give Lester what it takes, they seem unlikely to sign Shields or Scherzer, at least.

If everything breaks right, they can probably find value and sign a few from the group of Haren, McCarthy, Masterson, Hammel, de la Rosa, etc. and hope to get lucky.
I would have to be on a lot of valium, or something, to make a matter of fact post about falling all the way from Lester to Haren or Hammel, and accepting it. This is getting near Fiskian.

Or on the 16th, since for many years the trade deadline was actually June 15. One notable exception was 1976 when Charlie Finley tried to sell off all his problem players -- Vida Blue to the Yankees for $1.5M, Joe Rudi & Rollie Fingers to the Red Sox for $2M. All the Boston stations led off their 11 pm news broadcasts with it, and then Bowie Kuhn killed the deals.

Well, we've already heard the Cardinals may be willing to deal Miller.

Exactly. Lot of shit just being flung at the walls now.

EDIT: As DrewDawg points out, someone like Miller is about the best we can hope for.

FWIW, this matches pretty well with what the A's can offer:  Milone, Alcantara and a couple of A-ball lottery tickets (which might suggest the source...).
