You guys must be new to this baseball fan thing if you're going crazy about this.

None of the teams that have been rumored are out of it with over 24 hours to go.

Um, this isn't exactly what I would call praise.

Which is why I was thinking it might be a three team deal. Other teams might be more enamoured of his power (36 HRs last year) than the Red Sox.

From what we've seen, I think Beane is playing this brilliantly.  He doesn't have the top gun Boston is trying to obtain, but he has quantity.  Make a detailed offer to Ben and be ready to swoop in when everyone else declines to deal their top 30 prospects, the clock approaches midnight, and OAK's becomes the best specific deal remaining.  Might not work, but it's good GM'ing...

Farrell: "We've met with guys individually, who are connected to speculation and others who are not, and we have been as candid as possible with them. We are keeping them focused on the task at hand."

You'd think it was Thursday at 3:59pm with some of the reactions here.

Ben should call them all at 3:45 tomorrow, let them know he's going to accept the best offer sent to him in the next 10 minutes, and fax in the deal to the league's offices at 3:57 (you want to give yourself a few minutes so you don't Elway the whole thing). There will still be teams with top prospects in the running. Put they pressure on them.

I would love to see the Pirates land him just to see them make a big push in the post season. It's been a long time for them.

Fuck the Dodgers, even though I like Joc. Athletics have been so many times and flamed out so I wouldn't mind them getting him.

Maybe Beane is working his own three way to get us better prospects?
A's Jason Hammel, part of the A's - Cubs deal just gave up six runs in the bottom of the first to Houston. Beane's first big trade this year, accompanied by his sending a perfectly good performing pitcher Tommy Milone down to make room for Hammel, is blowing sky high right now.

If that's the case, then they either made it clear very, very recently, or they've never really been involved in the first place. Especially if yesterday's tweets about the discussions not being about Kemp held any truth.

Let LA and Pittsburgh throw out some lowball offers now and watch St. Louis swoop back in and make the deal. It's not like they got cleaned out for Masterson.

Agree re Bucs. Would be nice for Lester to go somewhere where it will be easy to root for him

That's not good.
Not good if you were expecting them in the running for Lester, but (I know this is the Lester thread) we got guys who could count as "back end" "bench depth". Lester has been a smokescreen but we send them Lackey and Gomes instead.

But he does it in that reassuring way. If someone had to tell me that I had cancer, I'd want Farrell to do it.

I'd prefer Bobby V.

I know we want a big prospect bat for Lester, but I could see us dealing for some of St.L's pitching.  The Cards don't seem to love S.Miller.  I'd be fine getting S.Miller and C.Martinez for Lester (and would add A.Miller if need be).  We can work on getting the big bat later.  Maximize the value now.

I'd be happy with Piscotty and Miller, even it takes something extra on our side.

There are a lot of 'Cardinals still in it, Shelby Miller could move' tweets.
Trading for Masterson makes a ton of sense if Miller is the key piece moving for Lester, so all fits.

Where is Drew Rosenhaus when you need him? "Not going to comment on rumor or speculation".

What would you like, a direct quote from Cherington? You asked for links outside of SoSh. He provided that.
I don't recall asking for anything. But yes - an actual quote by someone mildly associated with one of the two clubs would be appreciated before we continue to pencil him into our line up on these threads.

K's down, BB up. Any backstory? His FIP is closer to 5.00 than 4.00 this year.

The wrong side of the bridge....
Miller's three-year K/BB trends scare the living crap out of me (and his three-month trends are just as bad...it's like a fractal). Are we really not worried about this? Or is it just that as a more or less proven ML hurler he's a great get for a Lester rental even if he looks like a career-altering surgical procedure waiting to happen?

Yeah no thanks on Shelby Miller. Would he even crack the rotation without Lester? He's fallen off a cliff.

Wonder if Lackey is more attractive to the Pirates given the whole league minimum contract factor

Scary yes, but more like a two year trend. His first year numbers are skewed by being off of a base of 6 games (13 innings). This year is the outlier if you add in his minor league numbers.

Miller is too much of a risk to trade our ace.  Conversation should start with Oscar Taveras as this team badly needs a stud young hitter.  Carlos Martinez would be a great add in a potentially larger deal.
