Price has another year on his deal though. That changes the calculus a bit.

Sure, but I thought they had put him on the block until they thought they were back in the race.  I assumed he'd be traded either now or this winter.

This is true, but I think that we need to shore up our lineup first. Lester and Lackey and everyone else can pitch like studs, but when we only score 1-2 runs a game (seemingly) it doesn't matter.

It would be awesome if we could buy him back at the end of the year, though. None of this would be happening if almost every offensive player didn't shit the bed.

I'm not sure why it would or should be an either/or choice.

Championship clubs need both.

Tampa has also played at a 112 win pace for what equates to roughly 25% of the season.   They are very much within striking distance of the second wild card and the division.

Of course. I didn't mean we should sacrifice good pitching, just that if trading Lester can net us someone who can legitimately help us on offense (or perhaps get us a trade chip to land someone like Stanton), it's hard to say it's not worth it. Especially since he's available at the end of the year if the acquiring team allows him to hit FA.

For all we know they moved onto Masterson because someone else beat them for Lester.

I think it's more likely they were never seriously in the bidding. With reports that the Sox are looking for a top prospect, it's not tough to envision Ben insisting on Taveras as a Piscotty+ package doesn't really fit what the Sox have apparently been after... a big bat prospect, preferably an outfielder. Piscotty is an outfielder, but I doubt anyone would describe his bat as big. So for Ben it's "Overwelm me with Taveras, or you can't match what Pittsburgh has in Bell and/or Meadows."

It's not either/or, but if the Red Sox believe it will be easier to address the rotation through free agency than it will be to build a top of the league offense, it makes sense to use Lester and Lackey to bolster the line up and then look to replace them this winter.

I can see the shot now of Lester going through the dugout, shaking hands...

Hopefully if the trade is announced during the game, they announce it over the PA and the faithful give him a standing ovation...  He deserves it for all he's been through in his Sox career and I'd think it couldn't hurt the potential of him coming back in the future.  I'm still bummed about not just paying the man, but at this point that ship has sailed so time to move on.

Cleveland is a half game behind Tampa, and a half game closer to first place than Tampa, yet they're selling and Tampa is keeping Price.  Interesting.

Cleveland has a full rotation since Salazar straightened out. Sent Tomlin down to make room for Masterson

I have a feeling that if that's the case it was conveyed to the Sox before 2:30 pm. This is more that the Dodgers realized their offer wasn't enough and is just getting the word out.

Or, it's all negotiation.

I'd rather hold onto Lester since St Louis and apparently LA is out of the running. Not interested in trading Lester or Lackey for the 10th best prospect in the Pirates organization.

I don't see much reason to believe anything that qualifies as speculation at this point. Many hours left for things to change a hundred times before tomorrow.

Yeah, when I tune in it just sounds like a bunch of people breathing loudly through their mouths, so I just shut it off ten years ago.

We know absolutely nothing about who is in the running, what they might be offering, who has overplayed what hand (Although I at least know that GHoff was kidding), and what is actually going on.

We know nothing.

All of this is enjoyable.

All of this remains a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury.  Signifying nothing.

Alvarez a healthy scratch in Pittsburgh. Third baseman with an inability to get on on base at over a .300 clip. Three team deal, or is this unrelated?

If there aren't reports of a deal being close or imminent with Pittsburgh in the next hour or two, then yeah, it's probably bad. If it's a result of Pittsburgh making an offer Ben is happy with and Ben turning around to give L.A. and St. Louis their last chance to top it, then it's a good sign.

In other words, we don't know yet.

What? Where are you getting the idea that Lester is going to be traded for someone like Harold Ramirez? He's 8th best, of course, but their 9, 10 and 11 prospects according to mlb.com are 2014 draftees and can't be traded yet.

Alvarez has been having defensive issues and they don't think his head is in the right place. I don't that Hurdle mentions his mental problems with throwing the ball the day before dealing him.

If they end up not trading him and he walks at the end of the season ... man is the PR going to be tough.
Why?  All it means is that Ben didn't get the value he was looking for, and decided to go with the comp pick.  If those tweets are to be believed, he wasn't ever going to get the return that everyone in these parts was demanding to ship Lester out.

(fwiw, I say he's still getting traded).
