Bloom young and relatively inexperienced. Was he in over his head for this important trade deadline?
Lol what? This team is overachieving one year after trading away one of the best players in franchise history and starting an organizational rebuild.

Tossing long term progress out the window for the chance to possibly chase a championship is now how you have sustained success.

Seeing the insane prices people were paying only reaffirmed my belief that Chaim knows exactly what he’s doing and exactly where the organization stands as a whole.

Couple other interesting things today. First, the Rays didn’t make any dramatic moves either. That’s par for the course for them, but is somewhat comforting given they are our main competition for the division.

Second, what in holy hell were the Rockies thinking? They are one of the worst teams in the NL, this was a major seller’s market, and yet they couldn’t find any takers for Story OR Jon Gray OR CJ Cron OR Daniel Bard (a 37 year old reliever who stands no chance of still being around by the time the Rockies are competitive again)?

Biggest surprises for me are The Rockies not selling anything, and the Twins not selling everything. All in all, I love the Schwarber pickup. Thats a goddamn steal. The random Relief pitchers are flyers. Hopefully they can get some outs. Thats all they are there for. We didnt lose any significant talent, and in a year or more that will show. I'm sure they have a plan to shuffle Dalbec out, so we just have to wait and see. He needs to get straightened out, and hopefully they can do that for him. World Series 2021 sure looks alot closer to me. Try to stay positive everyone.

I know most people don't agree with this sentiment, but I liked it more when we weren't run by a Tampa guy and acted like the big market team that we are.
Yeah, those Tampa guys are such hacks. Look at how that Friedman clown ruined the Dodgers. God help us if Bloom turns out like that idiot.

May belong in another thread, but what are the Red Sox going to do about 1B going forward? They were so concerned that they put their primary 2B there and almost killed him.

- Hope Dalbec learns how to hit (or not strike out)
- Platoon Dalbec/Cordero (as seems to be the case) and hope Cordero's Worcester Miracle translates to real baseball
- Try Schwarber out as a work-in-progress and hope he doesn't Arroyo himself
- Ditto Plawecki
- Count on Marwan to find his stroke again and make him the everyday 1B

I guess it's status quo. Dalbec/Cordero and hope for improvement.

I'm in a minority, but I am disappointed Chavis didn't pan out. He looked the part. When he came up i REALLY thought he was gonna be a legit ballplayer.

The sad thing is that the last few pages of this thread are such ass that I legit can't tell if this is sarcasm.
Trading Chavis for Davis is like rearranging deck chairs on a submarine.

[Edit: I see below it's contagious.]

Disappointing deadline compared to what everyone else did, but it's what I expected. This is a good, not great team that simply doesn't have the farm system to make big moves yet. Bloom has consistently said it's not just about building for now, but to create a team that's going to compete year after year. Trading whatever little chips they have now after a somewhat unexpected season would have been out of character.

I think it's Schwarber unless one of the other outfielders (JDM?) wants the job. I don't think it's Dalbec/Cordero.

After all that, the trade deadline will leave us with one fewer first baseman. Pretty cool.

Any chance they extend Schwarber or does he walk?
He doesn’t walk for awhile because of the hamstring.

In all seriousness, I’m a bit frustrated too, but what deals could the Sox have gotten in and matched the prospects that were actually taken. Seems our farm just wasn’t there yet.

Everyone loves to talk about Tampa, but y'all really wanna trade the LITERAL championship success the Red Sox have had for a few 90 win seasons that fall short of the playoffs, one playoff series that extended beyond the Division Series the last 10 seasons, and I guess some fun prospects?

Rest assured, it was.

Andrew Friedman did pretty well moving from TB to the Dodgers, I'm sure Chaim will spend when the time is right.

It isn't.

When folks say, "but it only took the #6 and #12 prospect from the system X to get that guy", they don't realize that the comp from our system would be #3 and #5...who are also our ML depth at important positions.

Tough watching Kris Bryant crying after he heard the news he was going to SF from the Cubs. The human element is always in play.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Well, at the end of the day, this means Bloom couldn't work his magic to acquire one MLB player with 1B experience and a league average bat.

Maybe there were none. But I doubt that.

You may not be aware, but people aren't pining for Bloom to bring in just ANYONE on an MLB roster.
Among others:
Bloom currently putting the finishing touches on the "We are acquiring Chris Sale, so we're really trade deadline winners" statement that he'll be giving to the media shortly.
I don’t know how we can’t get at least a reliever upgrade for some superfluous guys who won’t make the 40 man. Fulmer from Detroit? Etc.
So the Giants, the last remaining team that hadn’t made a move, finally do something. Can’t wait to hear Chaim’s spin on this, including how he’ll sell this to the locker room. “Nice season so far guys, unfortunately we didn’t want to pay for any help for you unlike every other team you’re going to play moving forward. Good luck!”
People were whining on this thread because we hadn't brought in anyone today. Well we brought in 2 relievers. Not the ones most people here wanted, but apparently ones Bloom wanted.
At least now the whines will be a different flavor.

Google Andrew Friedman.
Then stop saying they should emulate Tampa and talk more about the Dodgers, I’m sick of hearing that the Boston fucking Red Sox should try and act more like a team that has had one successful postseason push in a decade and it was during a write-off season

The McAlphabet acquisition (and Moreland on a similar note) jazzed me on the imprtance of having a good defensive 1B, particularly - in the current case - impacting plays out of 3B and SS.

The thought of a work-in-progress defensive 1B is a little unsettling. Even Dalbec isn't so good at that.

You're obviously just going to keep talking past Andrew Friedman's example of transferring the TB approach to a big market team.

Nobody doubts his success here so far! But I'm talking about one specific part of the job, which is what this thread is about - a pressure trade deadline as a buyer. It's not something he's had to do and may have been overmatched..just my opinion.

It’s no accident the Dodgers perennially have one of the best farm systems in baseball.

The Red Sox do not, and you aren’t gonna build one by trading away what attractive prospects you do have for rentals.

Friedman is emulating Tampa with the Dodgers, only with a big fucking budget. Bloom right now is Friedman in 2015 or so.

The frustrating thing is that the luxury tax threshold actually mattered. We jumped through all those hoops to get under the cap and reset the tax for a year only to have to do it again when we have a strong contender and they’re gonna write a new CBA? I don’t get it.

They may still just put Arroyo at 1B. Kike at 2B with Schwarber/Verdugo/Renfroe OF. Duran back to AAA when Schwarber ready.
I think this is a real possibility. Duran has until Arroyo is ready to come off the IL (or Schwarber if Arroyo is first) to show he can hit at the major league level. If not, they send him down and have him on the playoff roster for speed off the bench.
