Sorry, but if your reinforcements are a guy that can’t play for another two weeks at a position TBA + a pitcher coming off a major surgery that’s going to pitch maybe 7 games down the stretch while everyone around you gets markedly better it’s not enough.
Are you on hold with EEI right now?

Waiting for Spier or whomever to tweet that the Red Sox did not make any moves today...

The Blue Jays and Yankees know the Sox are not particularly talented and have very vulnerable pitching and decided to go for it. Can't blame them, much like I can't blame Chaim because he has to know this team is probably the fifth or sixth best team talent-wise in the league and is unlikely to make the WS

I think the message is clear: "We like our ball club. We like where we're at (1st) and we're not mortgaging the future for a lottery ticket FA."
I'm cool w/ it. I don't think this club is a WS contender BUT I didn't think the 2013 team was either, especially compared to that year's Tigers juggernaut (w/ Verlander, Scherzer, et al).

Edit: Schwarber is a nice piece, too!

I mean, there are a few minutes left...but usually there are too many holes on a team to realistically fill, or the need is an ace or a closer where the costs are always exorbitant...but a league average 1B? I can't believe no one was available.

The fact that Speier has NOT said no more moves makes me think something minor is announced soon. I believe in years past, he's played the role of grim reaper before 4pm.

Can I ask those of you in the camp of "In Chaim we Trust", why you trust him? I'm not saying I don't trust him, but I just don't see what he's brought us yet.
I trust him in a sense that he’s building a competitive club and farm system sustainable for winning year after year. He seems to have a knack in finding value in players like Arroyo and Renfroe. At some point, we will have a stacked enough farm system to make a big trade if we need to but that time hasn’t come yet. We have one of the best records in all of baseball a with a great chance at the playoffs. We just drafted Marcelo Mayer and signed him to boot. It’s been a good year so far.

Who hired Cora?
I actually would love to know how much say Bloom had in that rehire. It struck me as a Henry/Werner move but you may be right. I'm not saying he's not good, I just don't understand the trust people have placed in him this early.

If the plan is Schwarber taking a shot at 1b, then I'm on board for what Chaim did.

I think the bullpen can hold up. I think the starters plus Sale are ok.

But running Dalbec out there every day is a huge issue. And we sorely needed a first baseman to get through the rest of the season.

63 freaking wins at the deadline apparently means nothing. The first base hole is just so obvious. JFC

Armchair QBs - tiresome.

It’s more interesting (and harder) to try to figure out what Bloom is thinking, which I’m sure is along the lines of what Merloni said. He must also think the Franchy/Dalbec thing is fine and that the return of Arroyo/Santana/Gonzalez will cover whatever other needs. And of course Chris Sale.

I agree with this and I like the fact that Bloom didn't overspend to make a 'flashy' move. I like the long-term plan to rebuild the farm system while staying competitive. Adding Sale and Schwerber is not nothing. Those are big additions. Getting Arroyo back healthy will help as well.

First place team? Big upgrade to farm system? Under the luxury tax? Schwarber for free? Long term vision? Flexible team that fits Fenway?

Yup. Nothing

Well, I'm no Chaim Bloom, but I don't think I'd characterize the Franchy/Dalbec thing as being "fine"...

Entering this deadline I was hoping for someone offensively competent to play first, a middle of the rotation starter, and some pen help. I would have settled for two of the 3.

We got an extra outfielder.

If he plays first, I guess its not all bad. I actually hope he does because we need every bat in the lineup to keep up with the runs that will be allowed by the bottom 2 or 3 guys in the rotation.

Oh. Can you give me the final AL East standings so I can make a wager?
What do the final AL East standings have to do with anything? Every team they’re competing with made major acquisitions. Even if they do not lose first place, the teams they are most likely meeting in the postseason all made major acquisitions. I am not even saying they had the pieces to get Scherzer or Berrios, and I certainly don't want them giving up pieces like the Cubs got for Kimbrel, but they clearly need help at 1B, clearly can use another SP and bullpen help is always nice. To come away with only Schwarber, to me, is a fail - and as I said, I love the Schwarber add.

I just think when your playoff competition (MFY, TOR, TB, not to mention teams in other divisions) all make significant moves there needs to be more than Schwarber.

It's easy to sit at home and bitch. We trust Bloom and his team to do the right thing. This isn't baseball cards.

I have faith that they know what they are doing.

Let's play some ball and let the chips fall where they may.

Regarding upgrading the farm system, I defintitely agree. But that's also why I'm frustrated we weren't bigger players today. We have some legitimate pieces to fill places in Boston soon, but we also can use guys like Downs, Yorke, Groome, Winckowski to make the current team better.

It's impossible to know what Chaim turned down but I think it's perfectly reasonable to be disappointed that we (apparently) didn't land a true 1B upgrade (assuming Schwarber only moonlights there) and another arm. That critique doesn't mean people think Chaim is trash. This stuff isn't so black and white. Characterizing all criticisms as WEEI drivel is just as tiresome as those calls themselves.

On the whole, Chaim has done a great job and this team still has a great shot at a special season. But it's possible that Chaim could have been too conservative here. We'll obviously have to play it out.

So the Giants, the last remaining team that hadn’t made a move, finally do something. Can’t wait to hear Chaim’s spin on this, including how he’ll sell this to the locker room. “Nice season so far guys, unfortunately we didn’t want to pay for any help for you unlike every other team you’re going to play moving forward. Good luck!”
Actually "We believe in you" is a pretty compelling message.
