Gotta be honest, none of the names we’ve heard do much for me personally. Honestly just starting to think standing pat is the way to go.
I think we need some sort of cromulent first baseman. Doesn't need to be a big deal or a superstar, but someone who can actual hit at an acceptable level.

Other than that, I'd be ok with just running with what we have.

Displaced
The MFY are in full panic mode. They will mortgage the future for a Wild Card hope. Blue Jays are adding pieces to keep up. The Red Sox have leverage and position. Hopefully they will be responsible and not try to keep up with the Jones’s.
And I hope they are actively driving up prices on players they aren’t truly in on, as well.

Padres building a super rotation for the playoffs and their season might come down to a Wild Card game.
They have traded for Clevenger, Darvish, Snell, Musgrove and Scherzer, maybe I’m even missing one. With Paddack, Lamet and Gore internally. Not to mention signing Machado, Hosmer and others.

Predicting that from the Padres 5 years ago is crazy.

Oh yeah, that's exactly what you do. Move your franchise player from his preferred position to a brand new position in the heart of a pennant race.

Can we keep the EEI-level fantasy talk out of the thread?
Hey, never-going-to-happen proposals that completely disregard the fact that players are people with tastes, preferences, and egos are still better than speculating about whether or not Scott Boras is in some way behind twitter posts.

Is it really true the playoffs are a crapshoot? So there is no recipe toward the type of teams that generally win the WS?

I never bought that back when Beane or even Theo said it. I get why the FO folks want to put that out there - it takes all the pressure off them, making it sound like its literally just picking out of a hat. Which to me is BS.
Is there a formula for winning the WS? I would be curious to see what is written on the subject vis a vis analytics. I could be totally wrong, but I was always under the impression GMs strive to build a team for a full season and hope players get hot in the post season.

Just curious if there is a provision for bringing someone back during the trade deadline sort of like there is for injury. Someone gets move and a hole is left, can the guy be recalled?
Yes, NY just did this yesterday, but it's already been made clear that Houck is only going down as a technical move so that BOS can play with an extra player for a week. You get a 27th player for a doubleheader, Houck will be that 27th player and pitch in 5 days, then he'll be back when he is allowed, not missing a start.

Let's try to keep the quality level on posts a bit higher here, people (myself too). Thanks.

I'm surprised we haven't heard a peep about Carlos Santana. He'd be a solid addition to the lineup and is signed for next year at reasonable money, bridging the gap to Casas.

Thanks caught the latter part of that after I posted.

Making a move like Rizzo makes the most sense to me. Houck and Sale are great mid season acquisitions already.

With the black hole at first? I dunno ...I'd still like to see a first baseman and an arm - either starter or reliever and I think we'll see at least one if not both ...

Anthony Rizzo was a really great player just two years ago. Replacing the black hole at 1B with Rizzo would be such a massive upgrade for this team. Kris Bryant is also really good right now. Getting either of those guys would be a huge boon for this offense, which has scored the third most runs in all of baseball.

I bet Chaim doesn't want to allocate nearly $11 million to the first base position next year. I could be wrong, but Bloom seems to put a lot of stock in roster flexibility, and that doesn't describe Santana.

He does remind me of a lesser Victor Martinez (aging former Indian phenom catcher brought in as a veteran presence on a playoff bound team), and I'd like to have him.

All I want is a middle tier first baseman. Not the moon.
This is where I'm at. Fix what's broke, correct the correctables. If there's a great deal beyond that, sure, consider all options, but a quality 1B is all this team really needs to be a solid contender throughout the playoffs.

I know others here aren’t so high on Franchy, but I still think he can be an impact player for us. How sure are we that Rizzo’s next two months would be better than Cordero? Especially if it costs us prospects and the opportunity cost of seeing what he can do? I’m pretty sure is time in Worcester gained the team an extra year of arb control. I like Aguilar and Cron and all that, but Cordero has been looking good and it could be a lot more valuable to our future to see Cordero get a chance now that he’s healthy.

I don't necessarily think this is wrong, but speaking personally, I'd rather not let the deadline come and go without playing it safe. Plugging holes with modest upgrades has worked for this team in championship seasons of the past, and I'd hate to push all of our chips on the notion that 1B will somehow figure itself out. Again, I don't think what you're suggesting is outside of the realm of possibility, but I'd rather not spend the rest of the season seeing what we've got in Franchy while the Rays peck away at our tenuous division lead.

I generally agree with you, but even if Franchy looked like he was starting to hit, I'd like to have a better defensive 1b for the playoffs.

I don't think Rizzo is worth it more due to the unneeded AAV.

I'm not sure CJ Cron or Jonathan Schoop would cost much in terms of prospects -- both are short term rentals, so maybe a lottery player at most. Either one would be nearly twice as effective as our current 1B production, representing an enormous upgrade for little cost.

Dalbec is one of the worst hitters in the league right now -- and Chavis has been even worse. Both have looked better than Franchy at MLB.

This isn’t the time to see what they have in Cordero. It’s time to win.

I think if there were another week or two before the trade deadline I'd want to see more of what Franchy can do, but I'm still not convinced he's what we need. Still more swings through fastballs and lunges at breaking pitches well out of the zone than I'd want to see...seems the kind of guy to go 1-23 in a playoff series. And I'm a fan of his...I'm excited whenever he's up to see if he might get on a roll. But I think this team needs a steady, if not spectacular, 1B for the rest of this special season.

i’ve been dreaming on franchy since the benny trade. barely any real playing time, no spring training, killing (relatively) in AAA. but people are selling and we do have resources. i’m crazy high about scherzer and bryant added to us. and fine w/, no super happy, about trades that get us better SP and 1b.

but if we stand pat and go w/ sale/houck, duran/franchy internal upgrades and actually make a run? my most fun season ever.

(but really, get scherzer/bryant)

I mean, pretty sure. Rizzo’s a 116 OPS guy this year, 128 for his career, and he’s not trying to learn first base on the fly. He’s playoff tested, for what that’s worth (great in the WS, mediocre otherwise). But Cordero’s a complete flyer.

If Scherzer doesn't pan out, what about Adam Wainwright? Career Cardinal so he would have 10-5 rights, and they probably wouldn't go for it, but they are out of it, and he's on record as saying 2021 or 2022 will be his last year. Maybe we can entice him with one last WS run? Career 2.89 postseason ERA. I'd at least kick the tires.

And if he decides to come back in 2022 he can always re-up with the Cardinals similar to how Rick Aguileria left way back when.

Even if we get a real MLB 1B we can still get Franchy ABs during the regular season.
