I realize that the As are not sellers right now, but any chance of prying Mitchy Two Bags back from them? Spinning a one year deal on Moreland into some prospects seems like an As thing to do. He is mostly DHing for them, so I have no idea of they have another bat who could backfill that slot.

If the Rays with Cruz and Scherzer get really scary. But no way they can afford Scherzer salary wise, right?
If the prospects are good enough, they could probably get the Nats to eat some of the salary.

Also, Scherzer's entire 2021 salary is part of a deferral deal to be paid out in increments over the next seven years. So the Rays may not have to pay him a dollar this year, just a 1/7 of whatever his pro-rated salary works out to in each of the next seven years. That might be easier for them to swallow.

But is Moreland that much of an upgrade over Dalbac? Its going to be Aguilar or Rizzo most likely. We either eat salary for Rizzo, or more prospects for Aguilar. Both are nearly identical players, but Aguilar has control for '22 where Rizzo is a straight up rental.

Unless Cleveland is actively trying to destroy the franchise, that's an easy no. Half their top 30 prospects are middle infielders – at pretty much every 2B and SS spot from AAA down through Lo-A – so they should have zero interest in Downs. Financially, they also have absolutely no excuse to trade Ramirez, certainly no more now than they did in the off-season since they weren't expected to be real contenders this year anyway.
Doesn’t Cleveland also try to mainly trade their good players to the NL? Lindor, Clevinger, Bauer were all traded out of the league. Not sure if that’s by design or just the way things worked out, though.

Mitch would be a minor upgrade over Bobby: about 50 points of OPS and a tick of defense. Where Mitch would make the most sense would be as the strong side of a 1B platoon with Bobby and not giving any first base starts to the likes of Santana, Cordero, or Marwin. I too would much prefer Aguilar if he can be gotten.

Maybe if we get Moreland we can have his consistently awesome first two months of every season with the Sox before he turns replacement level?

Yes, Aguilar would be preferable. I certainly hope Bloom is thinking bigger than Moreland.

On the other hand, the Washington Post MLB beat reporter, Chelsea Janes, has more:
https://twitter.com/chelsea_janes

Nationals are getting a lot of interest in Trea Turner, according to person familiar. Sounds like they haven’t ruled out dealing him, but would need to be presented with a total no-brainer of a deal.

Hard to picture them getting that massive of a haul with so many shortstops hitting FA this winter and Turner with just a year of control left. But he’s second among all MLB SS in fWAR. Might be the biggest impact player approaching available this week, even though it sounds like

Nats would need to get huge return.

[sorry, not handy with inserting from twitter]

He would be a great addition to a contender but which one needs a shortstop? Corey Seager should be back soonish for the Dodgers. The only team with a real need is the Athletics.

Sadly, replacement level Mitch would blow this crew away. I too am aiming for better than Mitch, but thought he could be a cheap consolation prize if the other better candidates don't pay out.

Duran would be the centerpiece in that deal, not Downs. Unless the Mariners give up Kelenic or the Yankees give up Dominguez, it would be hard for Cleveland to find a better outfield prospect than that.

Acknowledging that any specific trade is unlikely, I don’t see how it’s outlandish or franchise-crippling. I’d think the Guardians — a particularly miserly team facing arb increases for Bieber and Reyes — could be motivated to move him. Their top prospect is a third baseman and nearly ready, and Ramirez’s value will only decrease from here.

You’re right that Downs is probably not a good second piece in that deal. I’ve encoded Cleveland as flush with pitching and low on outfield prospects, but forgot about Rocchio and Freeman. Maybe something like Duran/Dalbec/Ronaldo Hernandez?

Maybe offer them Verdugo, and two prospects, like Wong and Downs.
I don’t know if I agree with it, but when Fangraphs finished their top 50 trade value rankings last week, Verdugo made the list while Turner was merely an honorable mention.

I haven't seen much mention of the Sox' near- future 40-man crunch in this thread.

I think I BIG trade with Washington makes sense. Sox should target Scherzer, Josh Bell and Josh Harrison.

Sox would give Downs and, say, 4 other guys who are gonna be crowded off the 40 next year. I'm thinking Groome, Potts, maybe Chavis and Marcus Wilson. We could even "throw in" Garrett Richards so Wash has someone to start in Scherzer's place the rest of the way. A trade like this would effectively free up 3 40- man spots while helping the team this year.

Given that we haven't seen Sale yet, and none of us really wants Pivetta or Perez starting a playoff game against the Astros unless totally necessary, Scherzer gives us some rotation certainty. They could even offer him an extension with Pedoia coming off the books.

Bell seems the PERFECT 1b solution to me. He's much younger than Rizzo and may still have some upside. Still Arb eligible. Good placeholder until Casas is ready.

Harrison could replace Marwin. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Byeeeee!

Why would Washington do this? They have the one of the worst farm system in the majors. Downs, Groome and even Potts would likely be in their top 15 prospects.

Why would the Nationals trade three chips for one team's package of prospects when they could get prospects from 2 or 3 teams for those same players?

Put another way, "Hey Washington, here's one guy plus a lot of pieces we've decided to get rid of to solve our roster crunch ... give us three guys we want."

For all the talk about the 40-man roster crunch the Red Sox are potentially facing this winter, isn't every team likely facing something similar due to the lack of a minor league season last year? Lots of prospects set back by a lost year, but their clocks still running. In other words, is it possible that the glut of players might mean more unprotected players are going to sneak through the Rule 5 draft than usual?

Not that that means the Sox shouldn't trade a few now, but I'm not sure there's as much urgency to do so as there might have been in past seasons.

You’re not even in the same stratosphere with this proposal. It will take 3 big prospects for Scherzer alone just to even enter the bidding for him.

Pretty sure he was joking, but Turner is far superior to Verdugo. If the price is reasonable you do it.
Then withdrawn. But maybe this main board thread should kinda stick to actual things.

Now this would make me happy (from ESPN):

Potential fits if Twins deal Berrios: Industry sources believe Twins starter Jose Berrios will be traded this week, with the New York Mets, Boston, San Diego and possibly the Dodgers having interest. -- Jesse Rogers

Curious where you’re getting this from. Three “big prospects” seems like an unrealistic return, especially with Max able to steer where he goes. I still love the idea of getting him but he’s owed over $1M per start the next two months and has a 4.64 FIP in five starts since the goop crackdown (on 6/21), over which time his home runs allowed have jumped from 1.28 to a Porcellian 1.95 HR/9.

The Astros got Verlander, then three years younger than Scherzer is now, for a 19-year-old pitching prospect Franklyn Perez (#6 in their system, and who the Tigers have since released), outfielder Daz Cameron (#10) and an A-ball catcher, and the Tigers paid them one-third of his contract ($24M). A package for Scherzer including one back-end Top 100 guy makes some sense, but I’d be shocked the Rays gave up like, Brujan, Baz and Josh Lowe for him. (Be great for us if they did.) I also doubt they’d have the money to extend him, which IIRC was reportedly one of Scherzer’s asks.

Probably somewhere in the middle of this.

Verlander’s situation was a bit different as it was a waiver deal and only one team involved.

My take is that they're not going to get any player that Tampa Bay wants. The simple reality is that Tampa's system is stronger and deeper than the Sox's. Tampa can beat any offer that Chaim puts on the table for Scherzer and still not deplete its farm system. Chaim would have to go full-Dombrowski and, even then, still come up short.

Chaim's best approach is drive up the price on Scherzer and then have a secondary attainable target(s) in his hip pocket.

Berríos or bust!

He much more fits the type of acquisition we should be aiming for: Young SP with additional years of control.

How high are you right now?
Seels hated the Betts trade and has transferred his hatred to Verdugo himself. So I would discount any trade proposals from him. He just has blind hatred of Akex. If Seels was running the team he would trade Alex for a box of baseballs.

I'm hoping that at the least, Bloom is digging around the bargain bin for replacement level+ first basemen. Something like Colin Moran (mentioned earlier this season, but has been injured) or the like. There are plenty of those guys out there, except that none of them play for the Red Sox. A guy with the right batted ball profile could even thrive in Fenway.

Steep, but also the initial ask. Start a package with Duran, regret Downs not advancing. Casas & Mayer are the only 2 prospects I wouldn’t make available …
No. Why deal Duran, who is one of the most exciting young players the Sox have had in a while? I wouldn't *start* with Duran. Maybe - MAYBE - I'd deal Duran but certainly that wouldn't be my initial offer.

I would trade Casas for Berrios. I think Casas is fairly well overrated on this board given his minor league production to date. I don't think we can come up with the pre-arb player they're reportedly asking for, but Casas, Duran, Seabold and Yorke should get our foot in the door depending on how heated the bidding war gets.

The opportunities to get your hands on a pitcher like Berrios are few and far between.

Please not the Dodgers FFS
From the selfish perspective of a Sox fan, I'd take Scherzer landing on the Dodgers over Tampa 8 days a week and again on Sundays. Any wins the Dodgers gain in the regular season do not mean much to the Sox.

Franchy go 2-4 today? He got that hit in the 8th against the MFY to keep the rally going. I'm guessing that Bloom doesn't want to give up on him yet or he's showing him for something big. He looks okish at 1st in the small amounts I've seen and if Dalbec gets a change at just seeing lefties (like he most likely will today) then I'm guessing that Blooms not going to mess with anything unless it's big. I guess we'll all find out soon enough.
