mlbtr/washpost: The .500 Yankees have told left-handed reliever Andrew Miller that they’ll trade him by the Aug. 1 deadline if an offer comes along that’s too enticing to pass on, he said Monday

Especially with this news

“@Ken_Rosenthal: #Astros’ plan, per source, is to play Gurriel at 3B once he is ready, possibly in three weeks or so. Unclear what this means for Bregman.”
I see a fair share of Astros games. Moving Bregman, or even Correa, to LF could make some sense ... eventually. For his offensive tools, Correa is not in the class of top-flight shortstops defensively

I think Keith Law in his chat yesterday was saying he sees Bregman moving Correa off short.

Well, he won't be going to third now, if Gurriel stays in the infield

Yeah, obviously this move makes things more complicated. Just saying he's held the opinion Bregman would move Correa off SS almost since he was drafted and I almost want to say he's predicted Correa growing out of SS either way, but I could be mixing him up with a different SS. He once held that opinion on X, but he changed it before X made the bigs.

Quinton McCracken (yes, that Quentin McCracken) is the Astros director of player development, and he offers this on Bregman while seemingly auditioning for a Bull Durham sequel:

"The kid is a baseball player," McCracken said. "He's a grinder, he's a grunt, he's a baseball rat and a competitor. He gets the best out of his tool set. He's still young in his pro career, but he's really hit the ground running."

"We don't want to get the cart before the horse here," McCracken said. "But he's definitely making a statement. There's no if, ands or buts about it."

The cliche meter just went nuts.

I'd like to see the Sox make a run at Jacob McGee, now of the Rockies but formerly of the Rays. If they have to pay full official closer cost for him, then forget it. But if he's still healthy and just having a shitty year in Colorado, then maybe he could be bought low. He actually has reverse splits over his career but I'd like to see a lefty to replace Tommy Layne. I know Layne's numbers are okay but he inspires no confidence in me.

Interesting idea. And his splits his year are cartoonish: 9.42! ERA in Colorado, 1.98 on the road.

But the more I research him the more he worries me. He's lost 3 mph off his fastball since 2014 (96 to 93) and has had a string of injuries large and small.

As you say, depends upon the asking price, but I'm not certain getting him out of Colorado will solve all of his issues.

Good information. That reduction in velocity is scary. Unless you could point to a specific, relatively benign sort of injury, e.g. strained calf, that would scare me away.

Looks like Chapman is officially a Cub!
ESPN says that nothing is going to get officially announced because the Cubs have a window to try to sign him to an extension. I imagine the deal falls through if Chapman won't sign with the Cubs long-term.

Edit: Chicago papers now saying that the delay was just due to Chapman's physical. Deal will be finalized shortly. Cubs gave up a lot, but their 'pen has been suspect and they'd be crazy not to GFIN.

Preller is doing a great job. Wonder if they would even think about moving Wil Myers?
I agree that Preller has done a great job the last 16 months or whatever, but didn't he kind of create the mess that he is now trying to fix? It's great that he is making up for it, but the Shields/Upton/Kemp etc. moves were his doing to begin with.

Sure did. But part of what makes a good GM is taking chances and knowing when to pull out of the game.

With Upton gone, is Margot up?

Never mind, saw he has an Achilles boohoo.

Also he definitely hasn't done a great job for 16 months, he turned down Michael Fulmer for Justin Upton this time last year, then Upton left in FA. At most it's nine months.

@JonHeyman
Padres are paying all except $5M on melvin Upton. He has $22M plus left.
Hansel Rodriguez doesnt show up in any of the Blue Jays' top prospects lists. Unless he took a major step forward in the past few months that hasn't yet been acknowledged in the rankings, getting the Padres to pay all but 5 mil of Upton's salary while only giving up a grade C prospect is a total steal for Toronto. Why do the Padres only make good deals with us?

I believe he was 19th on the Jays top 30.

#Padres making progress on trade involving Andrew Cashner, sources say. He may be dealt before start tonight in Toronto.

That doesn't say he may be dealt TO Toronto, it says he may be dealt before his start AGAINST Toronto (which was last night now, so clearly he wasn't).
