I remember when the Red Sox were big market and the Padres weren’t. Good times.
I’m going to live vicariously through the Padres, if this deal happens.

Tatis
Machado
Soto
Bell

That…wouldn’t suck.

Also Lopez had a terrible July and BAL seems to have figured out how to make endless relievers, so probably a good move both ways. The return seems light but I'm sure it's a case where prospect lists haven't caught up to reality on those low-level guys.

Until they somehow only win 85 games and miss the playoffs again.

The Baltimore #Orioles, who are just 2 1/2 games out of the wild-card race, officially wave the white flag: They send All-Star closer Jorge Lopez to the #Twins for pitching prospects Cade Povich, Yennier Cano, Juan Nunez and Juan Rojas. @JeffPassan with the full Orioles' return.
I can't really fault the Orioles here. They swapped a 29 year old reliever with a 5.50 career ERA for something. He might have finally figured something out, or he may be one of a thousand relievers who had one great year out of nowhere before turning back into a pumpkin.

And Bautista will slide into the closer's role.

Wouldn't trade histories. Wasn't my point. Just a fascinating juxtaposition from what once was.
The Red Sox are still a big market team, one that's just having a down year

We are a big market team. But I think that LA and NYY are now officially in another strata by themselves. "mega market" teams I guess. They are able to keep every player they want these days and there is seemingly no limit to who they can acquire. There is no year they have to shut it down.

This isn't a complaint. I just think there is another tier right below them that we are part of now

The Dodgers lost Seager, Scherzer, and Jansen last year and are no lock to bring back Trey Turner.

BOS & SD had virtually the same payroll to begin the year and virtually the same payroll last year. And the Padres are now run by the grandson of the former owner of the Dodgers (Brooklyn & LA) and have been under new ownership for a decade. So, it's not the same franchise you remember.

The Astros are in whatever the top tier is, they have kind of quietly made the ALCS five years in a row.

I guess that depends on how much they wanted Correa.

Re the "megas" I'm not talking about success. Just payroll flexibility, particularly mid season. Luxury tax is a non-consideration for them mid-season more times than not. Not saying they don't work to get close to it off season. But I never hear it as an excuse not to add very expensive talent at the deadline
