If that's the price for Castillo, Ohtani and Soto are going to get packages that stagger the imagination.

Maybe. I still think there's an upper bound and am skeptical that Soto will fetch a package significantly more than Chris Sale did. Sale was club control for 3 years at less money than Soto will get over the next 2.

NY absolutely did not deserve to get Castillo, as they would have made him cut his awesome hair, and fuck that.

I wonder if this will create a Rudy Gobert/Kevin Durant situation with Soto where the Nats feel they have to get way more than Cincy did. Maybe it's more likely Soto doesn't get moved until the winter now.
Soto loses a considerable bit of value if he doesn't move this year. It's about getting him two full seasons AND this year's stretch run. Getting 1.5 years isn't that crazy, getting 2.5 is very rare...to say nothing of everything else about Soto that is super rare.

Marte (SS) is MLB.com's 19th best prospect in baseball but he is also pretty far off, 20 years old in A+ ball. Edwin Arroyo (SS) is 93rd, 19 years old and in A ball. Stoudt is 25 in December, slowly recovering from TJ surgery, and has a 5.28 ERA in AA. Andrew Moore is a 23 year old relief pitcher they drafted in the 14th round last year who, while striking out a ton of guys, is also walking people at a pretty high clip in A ball (32.1 innings pitched 16.1 K/9 4.7 BB/9). Sure, three of their current top 5 prospects (1, 3, and 5) but their #1 (Julio Rodriguez) and #3 (George Kirby) from the beginning of the season are contributing in the majors right now.

edit: Matt Brash was their 4 prospect at the beginning of the year but has struggled so far and seemed to lose prospect status. So they have graduated 3 of their top 5 from the beginning of the year. Kelenic is still on the team and was recently a major prospect. Why not go for it? Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, Robbie Ray, Marco Gonzales, and George Kirby is a pretty good 1-5.

edit 2: Also forgot that they signed J.P. Crawford to a 5 year $51 million extension at the beginning of the season. He has 3 bWAR and 2 fWAR so far this year. Maybe they can develop another SS prospect by 2027?

Maybe but there is always Rodriguez to dangle. Though I'd say it's unlikely at this point.
I know it's not gospel, but Fangraphs ranks Rodriguez 4th and Soto 6th in their trade value column that just dropped this week. Obviously Soto has a longer track record, but Rodriguez has a higher WAR this year, is a plus defender at CF, and perhaps most importantly, he won't hit FA until my soon-to-be-8th-grader starts his freshman year of college. And he's probably a star in Seattle after that HR derby performance (if he wasn't already). I don't think he gets traded.

Short of the Yankees getting Castillo, this is a win for NY as it results in Castillo not going to a team that would be in their way.

How do you figure? SEA could easily end up as their ALDS opponent. They will likely see him Monday too, although looks like he will miss their series the following week in SEA.

It's also big for Seattle because, at last year's deadline (when the Mariners were on the edge of a run), they traded Graverman and it upset the clubhouse to the extent that they stumbled for a week or so before getting it back together ... probably costing them a playoff spot. The vibe is different in Seattle this year, and a deal like this has to send a positive message to the players

It's more my overall pessimism on this season speaking as I'm thinking that its either NY or Houston in the WS for the AL.

I think regular season meeting for NY are inconsequential at this point as it would take both a catastrophic breakdown on their part and everyone else going on unprecedented runs of greatness to knock NY out of a playoff spot.

I just looked at Seattle's schedule and saw how incredibly weak it looked with their last 21 games being against Oakland, Texas, KC, Detroit, and LAA. They'll most likely make the post-season, and the two series left against NY may be predictive, but I don't see them as a serious threat to NY with or without Castillo.

Like I said, I'm pessimistic. I think it was Seth Meyers that once said, I'm on such a bad run lately that if I rooted for gravity, we'd all be three feet off the ground.

He’s 37 and they suck. He probably won’t be good next year. They could’ve turned him into something worth more than he is to them for the rest of this year.

This is what Colorado does at the trade deadline… the front office clears their schedule so they can sit at home and enjoy MLBN on Tuesday afternoon like the rest of us.
