We all know who is responsible here...

I don't see how Ottawa gets out of this without some kind of issue. It sounds like vegas reviewed the contract, confirmed with the league they had no list and Ottawa said it hadn't been turned in. I'm not a lawyer or a CBA expert, but that certainly seems like the violation here. Seems a little odd that no one in Vegas ever had a conversation with the players representation about it, but plausible deniability, I guess. This is a pretty big mess.

Ottawa punished themselves already giving up a 3rd rounder for Hamonic.

Sending Dadonov to a non-playoff team and effectively shelving him for the year is also pretty shitty, but looks like the likeliest outcome.

I can't help but think is what happens when the old boys club moves into managing key components of day to day league operations. Some real amateur shit in place for a professional sports league.

No word yet, but Cap Friendly reverted the trade. Here's the impact to Vegas. They can't activate Martinez or Stone.

I wonder if Vegas tries to get the original trade with Ottawa reversed as well?

Also, Vegas lost last night to officially fall out of a WC spot. By most models, their playoff odds have fallen to ~25%. They are a point behind Dallas for WC2 but Dallas has 4 games in hand. Edmonton is 3 points ahead of them in the Pacific but has 2 games in hand. 4 points and 1 for LA for 2nd. It's pretty bleak for Vegas.

The NFL and NBA has super stars getting traded left and right and the NHL has a two-day crisis over a middle six winger being traded due to a paperwork and communication fuck up over a no-trade clause and now has a team with a $100 million payroll that can't activate healthy players because of the salary cap. Good times!

All true but I have little to no sympathy for a team getting burned by playing LTIR games.

Oh, I agree, I absolutely have no sympathy for Vegas. They got themselves into the cap mess.

I just think the whole situation around the Dadonov deal is a bad look for the league. Incompetance on a number of levels.

Oh absolutely. Right now I'd hate to the Vegas AGM who ran the paperwork and diligence on the trade.

This whole thing is a clusterfuck, but I think Ottawa is the one to blame here, not Vegas. They are the ones who received the no-trade list as required prior to 7/1. They then lost it or misfiled it or whatever. When Vegas acquired Dadonov from Ottawa, the belief was that the no-trade was invalid. The league approved this on the trade call between Ottawa, Vegas and central registry. Maybe Vegas should've checked with the player or something, but they would have no reason too since the league said the no-trade didn't exist. The trade to Anaheim got approved by the league on the trade call so, again, the league agreed the no-trade didn't exist. Ultimately, it appears Ottawa fucked up the most as Dadonov had proof (including some sort of confirmation/receipt from Ottawa) that he followed appropriate protocols and his list, with Anaheim on it, was valid. The outcome here is that NHL central registry is now going to have to maintain the no-trade lists and being the system of record.

Anyways, lol

And the vulchers are circiling and he could get traded again. Sucks for him as if it happens his season is over. I bet he ends up in Montreal for Weber's contract.

How many draft picks would Vegas have to give the Bs to make it worth them eating his contract to get no production? There can't be many teams that are able to take him right now and Vegas has to be desperate.

This assumes the Bs aren't on his list, I don't know who is besides the Ducks.

No chance. He has a $5 million cap hit for next season. The Bruins currently only have $3.5 million in cap space with Bergeron not signed. He also probably has Boston on his list. Apparently the California teams were blocked for tax reasons.

Some background from LeBrun. Behind the scenes, no-trade screw ups are somewhat common. There is no centralized database because apparently the agents don't want the lists to leak out so they want to keep the number of people who know/have access small. The responsibility is on the team to maintain the lists with their players. Another layer is the language for no-trades varies contract to contract. Some are submitted annually, some are submitted upon request, some are submitted once and then carry through the length of the contract. Anyways, it's not uncommon for an agent to forget to send one in or the team to misplace a received list. Some examples in the article were of low level staffers deleting a received list and also a list going to a GM who then got fired and didn't forward the list to those taking over.

Good article. Makes the NHL look like amateur hour. No trade lists should be a part of the players contract and be on file at the NHL Central Registry. Ottawa should be punished.
