First time I've ever had the thought: the business of track and field seems to be good right now!

Diamond League to increase prize purse to $9M. Across the 14 meets. And that's only half of the total winnings available, there's a promotional prize pool of another $9M besides.

Hadn't heard about a competitor to the Diamond League emerging, either:

The news comes after World Athletics ended a 128-year tradition by paying Olympic champions at the Paris Games $50,000 each and as rival track events try to muscle in on the circuit long seen as the standard bearer for professional athletics.

Retired American sprinting great Michael Johnson's Grand Slam Track will offer prize money ranging from $100,000 for the winner to $10,000 for the eighth-place finisher at each of four "slams" when the league launches next year.

It will distribute a total of $12.6 million in prize money in 2025.

"In a league of our own," Grand Slam Track wrote in a post on X on Wednesday, with a breakdown of the prize money.
They've always had good attendance at these featured meets... I just want to know where the eyeballs are coming from. The Diamond League has respectable broadcast deals throughout Europe (e.g. the BBC in the UK), but most of Asia has to catch it on Youtube... and in the US, it'll be on something called FloTrack. Maybe they're trying to honor the legacy of FloJo, I dunno. But it just seems like a strange commercial strategy to me.

Less than 12 hours away from the Chicago marathon (outside of the Chicago TV market, you have to stream on Flotrack). Perfect weather for the runners tomorrow.

The 5k was today and it was cool to see Emma Coburn run it. There was no elite field, so she started with everyone else. I was in the starting corral toeing the start line with her, and I decided to see how long I could keep pace with her. I lasted all of 400m.

Here is the start: Chicago Marathon (@chimarathon) • Instagram photos and videos
I'm in the black tank sprinting (with terrible form) towards the camera to find a clear path (also seen: slow runners jogging the start line and getting shoved).

Women's marathon world record, sub 2:10. That's faster than the men's world record when I was born. Sub five-minute mile pace. And nearly an hour off the women's world record during my lifetime. Amazing.

I just finished my shift at the marathon.

The atmosphere in the city was electric all weekend.
