Duncan signed on for 2 years last offseason knowing that LaRussa was only signed on for one.

I bet he stays in STL for at least one year with the new manager.

The Cardinals also hold an option for 2013. It's a bit odd since LaRussa's contract had a mutual option for 2012 but nothing beyond that, and he and Duncan have been in lockstep since 1983.

Obviously Duncan's status could be affected by whoever the new manager is.

You'd think this adversely effects Pujols' chances os staying in St. Louis.
Maybe, maybe not.
Not surprisingly, life under TLR has some unnecessary friction. If you remember, either the 2005 or 2007 all star game, TLR didn't play Pujols and Pujols was pissed about it and when asked if he knew he wasn't going to get in the game said that he had no idea. It's quite possible that Pujols has an ambiguous reaction to this.

Albert's going to get a long-term deal. No way LaRussa would have been around for it.

This is why I expect the Cardinals to take a serious look at in internal candidate - namely Jose Oquendo.

I think Duncan was part of the decision. They just won an infathomable championship, Duncan was stepping down....it just made sense to leave.

Francona is a perfect fit here....big franchise, Dad played for the Cards....has to be the top choice here. Would be interesting having Tito and Theo now be staunch rivals.

Duncan's wife has a brain tumor, right? Maybe he steps down for a year too.
She had surgery to remove it in late August, and reports shortly thereafter indicated she had "no loss of memory nor difficulty communicating." USA Today had an article on Duncan and his situation a couple weeks ago.

Even if things continued to go well for her, this is the sort of life event that highlight your own mortality. Duncan's 66 now, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if he decided to spend more time with her.

How quickly we forget their emotional joint appearance at the Glenn Beck rally in Washington

As for Duncan, his status will have more to do with the declining health of his wife than anything else
