Thanks for asking, I'm pretty much rooting against the Yankees until Boone is fired.

It's a long way until the offseason
I'm not going anywhere.

Edit: In all seriousness, if I could pick between 92-70, the second wild card, Boone managing again next year and 84-78, missing the playoffs, Boone fired, I will take the second option.

Yes, 1978 has left some deep psychological scars. Truthfully, 2011 isn't far behind! Blowing an 11 game lead in September!

But many remember far too many seasons where people wanted to start printing World Series tickets in June or July!

It has nothing to do with 1978 ... that's lazy posting

I've seen them win four titles, so I'm not going to get worried about a mediocre Yankee team

I just like to see them lose ... as many times as possible

Well, that's not quite true

"Like" isn't a strong enough word

it’s July, not September, and I will never, ever root for the Yankees. Fuck them

but I won’t be terribly upset if they sweep

But '78 is why I like to see them lose (or at least, chronologically-speaking, the first reason) ... although "Like" isn't a strong enough word.

Someone posted here one time (and I apologize for not remember who to attribute this genius to) how the Yankees could go 0-162 for 4 seasons in a row, and in season 5 start 0-161 and I'd still cuss when I saw that they won the last game of the season.

So yeah, that's it.

I can't fucking believe Piniella stopped that fucking ball. He never saw it in the sun.
I've argued for years that it wasn't him stopping the ball, it was Burleson being a lousy baserunner. There's no way a flat-footed Piniella could readjust and get enough on the ball to throw Burleson out at third

I hear the seasoned fans and respect the scars. (I'm 50 and didn't have any perspective in 1978) When I take inventory I feel like I've had the better ride than Yankee fans my age. The historical ring, fun and legendary players, and everything else has been more than an equalizer for me. This era of Yankees baseball isn't intimidating in any way and it'd be sweet if they helped put more ground between us and The Rays. I also want more cracks at them in October and a chance to inflict more pain, but that may only come in the form of them having some false hope this year..

I hope they do us a favor and sweep the Rays.

Because rooting isn't going to change the outcome, so why debase yourself by rooting for the Yankees.

If you're going to root, root against the Yankees, every time. If the Yankees happen to win and cause an offsetting benefit elsewhere in the standings, then that's just less reason for disappointment.
This right here. Who you root for has zero impact on what happens. Root for the Red Sox to win every game because it feels good and is the right thing to do. Root for the Yankees to lose every single game because it feels good and is the right thing to do.

What gets complicated and even more irrational is that I also root for Tampa to lose every single game because I hate them too. I will be rooting for both of them to lose every game, even when they play each other. It's not possible, but so what? It's not possible that us rooting for or against anything has any impact either.

It's funny that people think they are being rational when cheering for a team to win or lose. You're not being rational, you're being just as illogical and silly as I am when I cheer for both Tampa AND NY to lose.

At least I understand that I'm being irrational, and at least I am doing the right thing that feels good, not thinking crap like "Yes, that's a big hit for Brett Gardner, awesome! Hooray, Odor just knocked in a big run! Go Chapman, close them out!" Gross.

Gotta disagree. We're being fans and fans cheer. And for various reasons

What's irrational is hoping that two mutually exclusive events both occur. As you say they can't. You can either hope for one of them or be indifferent.

Posters were given one choice for an outcome of this series.

And only one can happen

Rooting for the outcome that would make you feel the best, or you think is most advantageous to your team, is perfectly rational.

What's irrational is thinking your choice impacts the outcome.

And no one suggested that.

I'm from Connecticut and was an eighteen year old college freshman away from home for the first time in Pennsylvania in the fall of 1978 and I remember that day very well. It really sucked at the end. Not too many people at that time knew me or my sporting allegiance on the campus, but being surrounded by mouth breathing MFY fans from northern New Jersey was unbearable after the game. 2004 more than made up for it though. Now I compare 1978 with breaking up with you first real girlfriend, being very painful at the time, and 2004 being your wedding night, you're first girlfriend is no more than a footnote once you've reached the promised land.

It still gets a little dusty for me even today when I watch parts 8 and 9 of "Faith Rewarded", especially starting around the 4:25 mark in part 8. Faith Rewarded (Red Sox 2004) [Part 8 of 9] - YouTube Faith Rewarded (Red Sox 2004) [Part 9 of 9] - YouTube

This strikes me as a straw man. I don't think anyone is talking about "rooting" for the Yankees in any given game, but rather coming to an an ideal 3-game outcome and "rooting" for that. Yankees winning the 1st two in extra innings slogfests, followed by a nut-punch loss works for me.

Would rather the Yanks still thought they should be buyers rather than sellers. Don't want them picking up young talent and shedding off underachievers.

So, 2 out of 3, Yanks
This!

I want the Yankees to win a few and put the Sox another game up on the Rays... Then I want them to trade a few of their best prospects for an effort at improving their playoff chances.

Then I want them to lose 8 series in a row in heartbreaking soul crushing fashion. Nobody has to ask what the acronym MFY means for a reason.

An alternate dimension where the MFY are entirely composed of Gardner clones.

Joey Gardner, RF
Bryce Gardner, 2B
Wes Gardner, 1B
Tim Gardner, LF
Frank Gardner, DH
Mike Gardner, 3B
Joey L. Gardner, SS
Harvey Gardner, C
Alfonso Gardner, CF

I’m rooting for three Yankee wins. Fan is short for fanatic. None of us are rational when it comes to the religion of baseball.

This isn’t about fearing the Yankees - it’s about never, ever ever rooting for them. Ever.

In the weeks after 9/11 I, like everyone else in the country, felt a nostalgic love for New York as “our” city that had been attacked. Hell, we even thought Rudy was some kind of hero leader that was worth applauding wherever he went and bought FDNY t-shirts etc etc. But when it came down to the playoffs that year I had no hesitation about putting my full support to the A’s, M’s and D-backs to beat back the Evil Empire and save us from yet another MFY championship.

I don’t care about the playoff calculations, the standings, the Rays’ momentum or any of that shit. If the Yankees are embarrassed by a franchise with a $10m payroll so much the better. Beat their sorry asses into the ground, make the Post and Daily News scream for Aaron Boone’s head, make Hank Jr panic and tear apart the team. Bring terror and misery to the NY fan base and beat them again into the ground. Sweep those MFers and crush any remaining hope that they’ll turn the season around.

TB for the sweep.

Using logic to convince me to root for the Yankees before they're officially eliminated is like trying to tell a dog not to bite a wound because it won't heal that way. You might be right, but the instinct is too strong and the reasoning can't be rationally processed.

Mainly want the Yankees to win the series but there may be some amount of games back that triggers Tampa to react with a big trade, so maybe it’s not the worst thing if the Rays win 2 of 3, say.

This is the sentiment I was going for when I said I’d never root for the Yankees, but wouldn’t be terribly upset if they win the series. I wouldn’t stoop to the level of hoping for it to happen, but it has a built in silver lining.

Honestly, I’m looking forward to this series. I would love to see the rays lose ground on us, and I would also love to see the Yankees lose ground on us and the wild card, and it’d be hilarious to see them only a game over .500 this late in the season

While this is correct, it doesn't work that way for me. I like to consider myself a kindhearted, rational person, and so nearly 100% of the time I think tribalism and irrational, non-scientific thinking are bad and at the root of most world problems. But since my lizard brain still has traces of those instincts, I like to safely direct them into the silly world of baseball, where I enjoy the fantasy that my rooting does affect the outcome, that good guys and bad guys are absolutes, and that my tribe are the good guys.

So I root against the Yankees.

He's apparently never being fired. Why? I don't know. It's the craziest thing.

My vote is bury the Yankees. In general, I am a believer in killing one team at a time and in all cases I prefer my Yankees dead.

I'm in the same boat as the person who wants both teams to lose every single game. That said, I hate the Yankees more than the Rays. A lot more.

This generally means I always want them to lose. But, I'm giving this a glass half-full look. I'm not going to really score-watch these games, so if I find that the Yankees lost, I'll be happy because the Yankees lost. If I find that the Rays lost, I'll be happy because our main divisional rival will have lost.

On the one hand, it's a horrible quagmire. But on the other hand, it's a win-win situation. Just depends on which way you're looking at it.

I'm also one of the most negative, depressive assholes I know, so I'm not sure where the fuck this ray of sunshine just came from.

How will you feel if the Red Sox lose the next three, the Rays win the next three and Tamps is in first place when their weekend series starts? GO MFY!!!

I know that the Rays winning makes the Sox taking the division more difficult, but I just can't abide the Yankees having any hope of making the postseason. Have the Rays go 3-0 on the Yanks, then the Sox go 3-0 on the Rays.
