Right—that was my point. It’s bullshit in the way that’s supposed to be sweet, but actually is a bit cutting, because really it’s him commenting on how he is the most dominant athlete in the family. Like, the comment doesn’t really have the same effect unless you know Tom believes that her greatness will always be measured against his.

I’ll let it go. Not the first time I’ve overanalyzed something.
Yeah, Tom Brady after 21 years in the league knows people think he's great and he's saying actually his niece is a better athlete than he is. That's narcisism somehow?

What an absolutely insane tangent.

We are through the looking glass. A kind comment about a family member becomes ugly because some people see the ugly in everything. If you want to find ugly, you don't have to stretch too far. But some people are flexible af right now.

You are one billion percent overthinking this. This is just goofy, dad-joke Tom Brady complimenting his niece. I didn't think of the Youk angle and I'm not sure he did either. He might even really think she is more athletic than him. I'm also quite sure he's not insecure and passively reminding people that he, not his niece, is the goat of the family.

Smart cap move for a team going all in during the Brady window, and Brady gets another year of effective security. I expect TB will not care very much if 2022 is a sunk cost.

Per ESPN, this frees up $19 mil. of cap space for this season. All in indeed. They only had a few million in space before this and Mike Evans has said he’d be willing to restructure as well.

Other than the Pats winning the Super Bowl, which to put it mildly seems unlikely this year under virtually any scenario, I would like nothing more than for Brady to run it back and win another one while setting the handful of records he doesn't already have. And I obviously couldn't care less about Tampa Bay's future cap situation post-Brady, so I'm happy with this extension.

Right for Brady fans who are also Pats fans, this is ideal. Couldn’t care less about Tampa, especially once Brady is gone. So load up while he’s there and hope that he gets #8 (assuming the Pats don’t win it, which of course is my preference).

What does that mean, about the contract voiding. Does that guarantee that it will void after a year? Is it a pay cap thing?

Mainly, should that be considered a 1 year contract or a 4 year?

I think it’s the same thing that the pats did on the revis contract where it was two years but automatically voids the second. Spreads out the cap hit but it’s written into the contract that the years after the first will be opted out of so it’s just a one year deal spreading out the cap hit

Does this in any way mean that 2021 is his last year or can he restructure next offseason as well?
Is there a reason they can’t do the old “reduce his salary to the minimum and convert the rest to a signing bonus” trick in 2022?

I figured that was the plan, that TB12 would retire after the 2022 season, and the Bucs would be in cap hell in 2023.

I don’t see why they couldn’t, though I wonder if the void years would let them spread out the converted salary for 2022 across not just 2023 but the other void years? If so, that’ll help mitigate the pain in 2023.

I am pretty sure Brady can be better than last year given the number of times I heard he was declining or had a horrible game or a horrible half a game or whatever, and how many times I heard that he was nowhere as good as X or Y or Z. So he COULD have a year where the season-long consensus is that he is very good BEFORE we get to the predictable part where he reminds everyone he’s the GOAT. That would be better.

I'm confused by the language. Does this mean that it's likely he's playing at least 2 more seasons? Or one more season?
He’s effectively under contract for two more years; anything past that is TBD. The ‘void years’ are basically fake years added on to the contract to spread out the cap hit attributable to the salary-converted signing bonus they are paying to him. If the Bucs don’t extend his contract again, his contract will void after the 2022 season and he will become a FA.

Has Drew Brees retired yet? If so, 2 more years should be enough to put clear daylight between him and Brees and also to give him a reasonable shot at an eighth ring.
The bolded is true but just so absolutely insane. We all got to watch the Babe Ruth of football.

Brady’s success has completely warped what people think is reasonable to expect great QBs to achieve. Normally it would be crazy talk to look at a guy like Mahomes and think he could possibly get more than three SB titles. Because only two players (prior to Brady) had ever achieved that - Montana and Bradshaw. And both those guys are among the best ever to play, and they both played for legendary dynasties that (it was thought) could never be achieved in the era of free agency. So even a guy like Peyton... to win two titles was about the most you could reasonably expect even an obviously great QB to achieve. Maybe three.

Brady has won SEVEN. And going into this past SB, people were saying that Mahomes had a legit chance to catch or pass Brady. They were already assuming he was getting a minimum of 3-5 titles. That’s absolute crazy talk.

Moreover, Brady’s success at this age has warped people’s view of QB longevity. Most guys will never make it this far, period. Never mind playing at an elite level past like age 38.

Tom Brady has completely warped our expectations and understanding of the QB position.

In related news, water is wet.

Brady is the GOAT. I think the combination of he and Lebron have warped the public psyches view towards success. It's going to take 20 years after they retire for expectations to reset.

One thing I love about this is that while GOAT can be viewed through different lenses (after all, Peyton has 5 MVPs to Brady's 3!; Montana has never lost a SB while Brady has lost 3!, etc.), who the greatest WINNER of all time is an objective reality not up for debate. Brady is without question the NFL's greatest winner - games won, playoff games won, championships won, division titles won, and while it gets a little sketchier in terms of win percentage (Otto Graham has him beat), Brady is still right there with that too and far ahead of anyone in the SB era.

And since, as Lombardi has said, "Winning is the only thing", well, Brady stands alone at the top of the mountain and nobody is even remotely close. Like, not even in the same ballpark. It's like he's on top of Everest and the next guy is back at Camp 2.

No you are correct; in that regard his competition is basketball players.

(ED: Russell: 11 titles, Olympic gold medal, 2NCAA wins, 11-0 in NBA win and advance or Lose and go home games, 22-0 overall in such games;
Jordan: 6 titles/6 for 6 in Finals, two Olympic gold medals, NCAA champion;
LeBron: 4 titles with three teams, 10 Conference titles, two Olympic golds;
Kareem: 6 NBA titles, 10
conference titles, 3 NCAA titles)

Haven’t we heard this rap eighty times? This is like how the sports networks have aired endless minor variations on the same Belichick segment over decades to fill air. Hoping they got more out of him than that, but Tom is too careful and GMA won’t go there hard. If Stern couldn’t get him, nobody will.

It makes me a tiny bit sad that he seems to be going the hard-core botox route. Just, a tiny bit.

I dont think Marron is the best interviewer, but hes gotten some surprising and candid interviews over the years. I think the combination of the long form, the environment (one on one in a garage), and self-deprecation put some people at ease. I'd like to see him give Brady a go.
