Tom Brady: Support and Bankability

Why? Who gives a shit what his personal stuff is? Don't murder anyone or commit sexual assault and you're good.

Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Jerry Seinfeld, John Travolta, Giovani Ribisi,Juliette Lewis..Beck, Doug E Fresh...do you not watch or listen to anything from these people? Don't like Mad Men because Elisabeth Moss is a scientologist? Refuse to watch the Simpsons because Nancy Cartwright is one?
Just a thought, but you can be disappointed in someone without abstaining wholesale from consuming their entertainment output. I think we've found ourselves in a sort of weird dialectical landscape where we frame everything as picking sides in the entertainment landscape: you can't just be kinda disappointed in a public figure's bad beliefs, you have to abstain from them altogether. You can't just decide said bad beliefs aren't a huge deal, you have to attack the notion of someone responding negatively to them at all. I still listen to Odelay but, yeah, I'm kinda disappointed that Beck is involved in an exploitative cult.

If Tom Brady decided to start going around talking about how great Scientology is, it would be dissappointing. It wouldn't stop me (or probably other people who feel similarly) from enjoying the rings or Brady's football prowess, it would just suck a little.

The entire cultural landscape is constructed for us to care about the personal lives of famous people. It's OK to have reactions to the way those famous people conduct themselves. Setting the bar for giving a shit at rape and murder as the only thing that should elicit some kind of emotional reaction seems like a weirdly low standard to me. But YMMV, obviously.

Outside of a MAGA hat in his locker (presumably given to him from Kraft on a request from Trump)
Do you not know that he is friends with Trump?

https://www.elitedaily.com/p/tom-brady-donald-trumps-relationship-is-complicated-8100986

"In a December 2015 interview with WEEI, Brady asked to be left out of the debateabout then-candidate Trump's proposed ban on Muslims. "He's a good friend of mine. He's always been so supportive of me," Brady said. "He's always invited me to play golf and I've always enjoyed his company. I support all my friends in everything they do.""

Yes I'm aware that TB12 golfed with Trump in the past. However I've no idea if he shares anything else in common other than a love of the game with Trump. Accepting a '16 campaign hat from Trump, via Kraft, shortly after Trump announced (and well before his racist toxicity was as apparent as it became) does not (to me) damn Brady as a racist/fascist. I'm not at all positive that Brady would give the same answer today than he did in December 2015. I think we've seen more measured responses from Brady about Trump since the election.

I don't think he's a racist/facist, what caught my attention is what I took as you trying to pass the buck to Kraft instead of thinking Tom put his friend's hat in his locker. Brady probably regrets it because of the blowback.

I was just trying to accurately account for how a MAGA hat was in Brady's locker. If your boss and someone you have shown great affection for hands you something from a joint associate is not a particularly damning event.

The MAGA hat was in his locker long before Trump was considered a serious candidate by anyone. This doesn't excuse his friendship with a truly vile individual, but it bears noting that at the time it was not considered any type of real endorsement of his candidacy.

A joint associate? Do you work in PR? Brady many times has referred to him as a good friend that he has spent a lot of time with in person and on the phone.

It seems obvious to me Kraft, Belichick, and Brady are all pals with the POTUS. Brady seems to de distancing himself lately (maybe because of his wife, his brand, or he had a change of heart).

I care a lot less about this than the TB12 stuff, tbh.

edit: But since we are playing this game, it would have been wild if Brady married Ivanka, right?

I can see you care little about this.

I don't particulalry care who TB 12 golfs with. I assume the list is very extensive and probably covers the right, left and middle of the political spectrum and he may like some of these people.

Being married to a Hispanic immigrant definitely puts the GOAT in a precarious position ... although Jeb Bush and MAGA himself are also married to immigrants so I guess it's not a deal breaker.

Gisele is of German heritage. Her family immigrated to Brazil in the 1920’s. She is not Hispanic.

I’ve heard different takes on whether Portuguese people are Hispanic. Are they/Brazilians definitely not?
No, Hispanic refers to Spanish-speaking cultures where Latin refers to geography. Spaniards are Hispanic but not Latin while Brazilians are Latin but not Hispanic. Portugese people are neither.

I know you’re a Jets fan so probably don’t see or hear his comments daily - and I’m a Pats fan as most of us here, so we sound defensive - but Brady himself has said it was given to him by Kraft.

http://time.com/4025262/tom-brady-trump-hat/

And if you ever listen to an interview, he’s about as bland and uncontroversial as one can get - which actually led to finger pointing over deflategate because he was accused of not being outraged enough at the initial press conference. That’s how the Pats work. You don’t stir pots. That’s why we win

He’s also been quoted as saying that they were friendly and ‘you support a friend whether you agree or not which was before Trump went toxic and if heard in context was a deflection. And criticized him over the kneeling issue.

So no, they’re not best buddies. They played golf a few times as rich famous guys before Trump showed his true colors. There’s nothing to write home about. And there’s certainly nothing to worry about him going full Trumpista.

If he told you he was Catholic would you be disappointed in an exploitive cult that also hid sexual abuse of children for years, fought wars in their God’s name because people didn’t agree on who to pray to and/or wanted land and money? That invests in military manufacturers and drug companies that make drugs that go directly against their anti-abortion preachings? I could go on for a while. I assure you a documentary on the history of both would show Catholicism as being far far worse than Scientology.

I have no idea why it would suck or it should elicit any kind of opinion from a fan, whether that be in totality or a cringe factor. It seems like a slippery slope of judgment to me, but as you say, ymmv.

Oh and btw I was raised and am catholic. I’m just not ignorant of the faults and I’m not going to judge someone else on who or if they choose to believe in.

Not to derail the thread but a difference is that a lot of people who say they are catholic hardly go to church and aren’t very involved in any religious community, whereas there’s no such thing really as a fair weather Scientologist. It’s not something you fall into just because you don’t want to think about religion too much which is how a lot of Catholics seem to be. And Scientology is extremely destructive to almost every member of the “church” as well as their families. So Catholicism may be be more harmful in a very macro sense but that’s really only because it has so many more members and has been around so much longer.

Edit: all that said I would become a Scientologist in a heartbeat were brady to convert ;)

A woman at a blackjack table in Vegas once told me that Tom Brady was immoral for having a child out of wedlock. I feel like that is somehow relevant to this thread.

This was the day after the Scottish game. She also told me Eli was better looking than the GOAT though. So she was clearly insane.

I was traveling back from the game. We couldn’t get a flight into Phoenix so my buddy and I flew to Vegas, rented a car and drove. We had a night in Vegas on the way home which was supposed to be celebratory fun but was not.

We re-tell the story of that blackjack table lady all the time because I went ballistic on her and left the table. She was needling me but the funny part is the comment about Eli being better looking was the last straw. Looking back the whole ordeal was surreal and hysterical.

I remember yahoo or something had a ten hottest QBs list once. Brady was like 3-4 and behind Aaron Rodgers.

I’m not even a Patriots fan but I find that statement about Eli very offensive. You can say what you want about Brady’s politics or his diet or how he treated his baby’s momma, but you cannot deny that the man is a handsome devil.

I’ve never really seen Portuguese people claim Hispanic. I’ve read about it a little on the internet but growing up in a dominant Portuguese (Azorean) community I never really heard it.

Ah, mine was regarding Aaron vs. Jordan "Bachelorette Winner" Rodgers. Eli vs. Peyton is like arguing who the best senior is on the JV team.

Semi-apologies for replying, as the thread seems to have taken a more amusing turn and this probably rolls back that tone, but your bringing up Catholicism is interesting. By coincidence, the other day I saw an interview with Terry Chimes, the Clash's first drummer, who appeared on some conservative Catholic program discussing his conversion and enthusiasm for Catholicism. And, yeah, I was disappointed to hear that he'd gone that direction. Won't make me stop listening to that first Clash LP, but it was too bad. The dissonance was especially striking since I think of that first LP as so anti-institutional.

I think the public element, as with Terry Chimes, shouldn't be lost either: people can and should believe whatever the heck they want to believe in the comfort of their home. Once they decide to put forward that belief in the public sphere, it becomes a subject to be reacted to. Do I care that Tom Brady is a Catholic? Since he's never talked about it or promoted it, not really. Would I be disappointed if he started appearing on Catholic TV shows to promote the religion? Probably. Would it bother be as much as when a former member of The Clash does it? Since the Patriots carry different social signifiers than an egalitarian punk band, probably not.

Your point about Catholicism vs Scientology is interesting. I think we tend to give a lot of credit to the major religions as historical and cultural forces - one can't really have an appreciation for the arts or humanity's cultural legacy without an appreciation for religion as such - but (and maybe this is a blind spot with me) I don't really view Scientology as having that same cultural cache. Sure, It lacks the millennia history of bloodshed and oppression that the Catholic Church enjoys, but it also isn't really a social force outside of it's scammier elements, so people devoting themselves to Scientology come off as fairly scammy themselves.

Anyways, thought provoking discussion, thanks.

According to this very authoritative-looking website, yes, they all lived in the southern region amidst large German populations.
I’ve been to that part of Brazil many times. My wife grew up there in ex-pat family. Her dad is American, mom is German, so we had a lot of access to the local German communities.

Germans started settling there around the same time that they were settling our Midwest- but the assimilation process was certainly not the same. German surnames are everywhere. You can hear German still being spoken in some of the smaller villages and towns. My wife and I met Germans from Hamburg, etc who have a winter homes in some of the small towns because it’s like little Germany with nicer weather.

Every trip, I’d get a lot of questions from locals about who this Tom Brady guy was, and why did Gisele marry him? There was some concern that she could have done better.

No, Hispanic refers to Spanish-speaking cultures where Latin refers to geography. Spaniards are Hispanic but not Latin while Brazilians are Latin but not Hispanic. Portugese people are neither.
That's one common usage, but there is no universally accepted definition of either term. For instance, the Hispanic Society of America encompasses Portuguese as well as Spanish cultures.

Governmentally it's not standardized either (e.g. US DOT and the Small Business Administration include people of Portuguese descent under the term Hispanic).
