Tom Brady retires

If the NFL asked him to do anything, I hope he immediately did the opposite. And yes, I am still bitter.

Can SF fit Adams or Godwin under its cap in addition to Brady (and Gronk)? They don’t have to worry about a First round pick…
Unlike ARod, Brady seems like the kind of guy who would, on his own volition, try not to take over the postseason news cycle. As others have said, the simplest answer is the most likely, he made the decision to retire but the news broke before he was ready for it. Probably wanted it sometime this week in the dead week.

Wouldn't the simplest decision be that Brady is telling the truth? That he hasn't completed decided yet.

I think there are 3 possibilities:

1.) Brady is going to retire, but was not planning to announce it to the world the day before the Conference Championship games. He would probably want his agent to work out something with the Bucs regarding his signing bonus and timing of filing of the retirement papers before making anything public. It's easy for us to say that Brady/Giselle can afford to leave $15M on the table (which is almost certainly correct), but he may feel very differently than we do about this point.

2.) He truly hasn't decided. Which in its own way would be notable, because in past years he would conclude the season by basically stating he's gearing up for the next one.

3.) He wants to play for another team (e.g., 49'ers), and his agent is working behind the scenes to game out the possibilities.

I'm in the camp that it's 80/10/10 with regards to the percentages for the above scenarios, and that 80% is my low estimate.

Yeah, there is no way that he would announce this a week or whatever before the $15M kicks in. None. Hell, I'd delay announcing mine a few days when it has no bearing on anything else for a free Big Gulp. He's waiting until the money kicks in.

I think your 3 scenarios are correct, but my probability breakdown is more like 98/1/1. I suspect somebody in his camp mouthed off before he wanted it out, and he either formally announces his retirement this week, or shortly after the super bowl.

I think 3 is probably less than 5%. I'd put 2 considerably higher. Not so much that I don't think Brady will likely retire. I think that might be close to 80%. More in terms of Brady might be 95-99% sure he's retiring but has a set timeline in his head on when he will make his final decision and will stick to his plan.

This is a red herring that several media sources keep chucking into the pond. He’s already earned that 15M; it’s a deferred signing bonus, not a roster bonus, so he doesn’t need to be on the roster as of 2/4 to earn it. He does owe the Bucs 16M of the 20M signing bonus he received for signing the extension last spring - 15M of which he has earned and is set to pay out this Friday - if he retires.

But this Friday payment date is meaningless in and of itself, and the publications reporting otherwise are clueless or are deliberately adding a false variable to an already interesting story to drive clicks and theories.

One possibility that I think is quite likely is that Brady's agent is telling Tampa that Brady will wait to file his retirement papers with the NFL until after June 1st if the Bucs let him keep the $16M. Brady's camp has some leverage here unless Tampa wants to incur a $32M dead cap hit for the 2022 season, as well as deal with a grievance filed by the GOAT, which is possible given the reason Brady signed the extension in the first place.

While this has no bearing on the insignificance of the 2/4 payment date, this is plausible in theory. However, it doesn’t really jive with the events of the last few days. If they’re negotiating over the bonus/retirement timing, then why is Brady reportedly calling Licht and Arians on Saturday to reassure them he hasn’t decided whether to play or retire? Seems like a stretch that he’d be negotiating over the timing of his retirement date while simultaneously telling the Bucs he is undecided about retiring. Once he broaches that discussion, the cat’s out of the bag because everyone knows Tom isn’t going to play another year to keep 16M. That kind of negotiation may occur, but I don’t see the evidence that is what has been happening (and it would be quite impressive if they kept that under wraps given the leaks springing everywhere).

Well...he did mention the Pats a lot when he left but kind of weird to leave them off in this post.

I guess Schefter can step back from the ledge now

I wonder if he's intentionally leaving out the Pats because he will sign a one-day contract in New England before he files his retirement papers and then he will thank BB, Kraft, the fans, etc...

He does everything for a reason, right?

I know he played for Tampa for 2 years, but way too much thanking of Tampa and not a single mention of New England. I know he already thanked people, but no one will remember you were a Buc in 20 years so stop pretending they matter.

Yes, I know I sound like a jilted ex...
Yes you do. He won a title there; it's a big part of his legacy now.

He definitely didn't need to mention the Patriots but maybe should've said something about New England fans.

You can't deny it is beyond odd in his retirement announcement not one thing is mentioned about New England, whether he did previously or not when he left. It is his retirement announcement. It's not done on accident.

The lack of any mention of the Pats was glaring to me at first, but he already thanked the organization and fans when he left, and he is so tied up in his personal brands now that I can’t imagine he would intentionally slight his fan base in New England.

This is probably it.

There will eventually be a thank you to New England. But he was a Buccaneer.
He was, but he isn't leaving Tampa. This is a retirement announcement. It's beyond odd and if he doesn't have a separate statement coming out for New England shortly, it's wrong. I just can't believe he would be that dumb not to. I would be shocked if something is not coming. If it doesn't, I would be beyond disappointed.

Well at first I thought no big deal that he didn't mention the Pats, but now it seems weird. Really weird. Strange for him to single out so many Bucs but ZERO mention of the Pats.

But this tells me that he's a Buccaneer, not a Patriot. So he's retiring from THEM, not the Pats.

He's still under contract to the Bucs. That doesn't make it un-weird, but different than if he were a FA.

Everyone thought I was being petty when I said screw the 1 day contract, he's a Buc. We'll see how this plays out but for the time being, I stand by my original post.

I have to believe something is in the works because if it isn’t , it’s pretty screwed up. He mentioned every other part of his playing career, including Michigan, but no mention of the biggest part.
