In the Madden doc, it looked like his sons did the induction speech so I don't think there are rules around having to be in the HOF to do an induction speech.

I think it's reasonable for people to attach some sentimentality to a figure like Brady. He's a Michael Jordan-esque figure whose impact on sports as a whole is indelible. He's maybe one of the three most prominent figures in American sports. We watched him and rooted for him for 20 years every Sunday. Spent money on tickets, jerseys etc. It's reasonable to have expected a nod in his retirement announcement and to be a little bummed that it didn't happen. If that's all we get is that post, it leaves a bit of a bad taste.

Am I alone in thinking the one-day contract thing is super dumb? How did that even become a thing?
I thought it was started as a workaround to team rules that said, for example, that you had to finish your career with the team to have your number retired. I agree they are silly — teams shouldn’t need an excuse to welcome back a legend who happened to finish his career someplace else.

I have no idea what happened at the end with the Pats and Brady---which is pretty remarkable. We don't know the balance of Brady saying "I want something different" and Pats saying "we don't believe we can pay you what you want" and various gradations in between. Whatever happened, they both managed it in a way that we simply don't know.

And thus, whatever may or may not be the static between them these days is about 99% conjecture. I get it, but like DOTB I also don't really care. I have nothing but positive thoughts about Tom Brady. I will miss him as a player and appreciate how amazing he was. I don't know who did what when he left, and I don't know what he did or didn't mean and why in his IG post. But it doesn't change a thing about my view of, and appreciation for, Tom Brady.

Thank you Tom.

How can he even sign a contract if he’s under contract in Tampa?
It’s simple paperwork. C’mon really? The only hiccup is how the process must occur for the Bucs to not take a cap hit which under the unique circumstances can easily be circumvented based on the timing of the official paperwork sometime this summer.

People really believe Tom Freakin Brady is going to retire from Tampa Bay and only mention the Bucs then that’s it. Sheesh.

Edit: The last paragraph isn’t referring so much to this thread but my Facebook, Twitter and the two rants I’ve gotten from my nephew and cousin. Lol

The man loves the process and competition, right? Invite him to join for a day or two of practice during mini camp or training camp or something. He can mentor Mac a little bit and put on the Pats jersey one last time.

I think what’ll happen is Goodell will offer to cut Brady in half and whatever team says they’d rather give up his rights then see him sliced in two will get to full on retire Tom.

The one day contract is kind of meaningless. It's just ceremonial paper work. With or without, Tom will have his day(s) to be celebrated in Foxboro.

OK, but if he does that there's about ten teams who are going to demand they witness the cutting in half in-person so that they don't have to watch him eliminate them in the playoffs again

I'm glad Brady got to go out on top. Although he was generally breaking my heart he was a real treat to watch. I don't know if Jordan or LeBron were the best of their sport or if Gretzky or Howe were in theirs, but Brady is right there with them and Babe fuckin Ruth.

We were blessed to have him.

I know that this is mostly the news and instant reaction thread, but I, for one, would be deeply appreciative to any who could help compile longer form commentary from local and national reporters, former teammates, coaches, and others reflecting on Brady's career. Much like Updike's farewell to Ted Williams, some great writing and previously unheard stories are going to come out of the monumental, likely impossible task of attempting to summarize the... well, unsummarizable career of Tom Brady.

As a start, I'll include Mike Reiss' initial attempt to say something, "Open Letter to Tom Brady," which I imagine has been posted in this thread already but is worth reposting. I also imagine Reiss is preparing something much longer.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/33174624/open-letter-tom-brady-thank-taking-us-magical-ride

Reiss also links to a roundup of stories from his 40th birthday -- two Super Bowl wins ago, as unbelievable as that may be to believe: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20222434/tom-brady-40th-birthday-stories-never-heard-nfl-2017-new-england-patriots

A favorite:

'Good afternoon! Good afternoon!'
Rodney Harrison, Patriots safety, 2003-08: "This was when I first got to New England, we had become friends and we were in the weight room. I show up around 6:30 in the morning and he says to me, 'Good afternoon!' So the next day, I get the hint, and come in 15 minutes earlier. Same thing: He says, 'Good afternoon!' Then the next day it's 5:45 in the morning, and he makes sure to say it twice: 'Good afternoon! Good afternoon!' So I make it at 5:30 the next day and before he could say anything to me, I looked at him and said, 'Man, I don't give a damn what you say, Tom, I'm not coming in earlier than 5:30!' We both laughed at that."

I'm in the DOTB camp of not caring even if Brady's retirement announcement called BB a dick, made fun of Kraft's massage parlor indiscretions and included video of him taking a dump at the 50 yard line at Gillette. I'll be disappointed if Brady doesn't want to come back to Foxboro for Tom Brady day, but (i) I don't believe that will be the case, and (ii) if for some reason he doesn't, who am I to say that he has to just to give me one more Tom Brady moment? It's his decision.

It is tempting to believe that Tom Brady belongs to us or that because we rooted for him and supported him for so long he somehow owes us something. He really doesn't. If the way things ended for him here left such a bad taste that he doesn't want to come back, that sucks, but what are you gonna do, remember the Lombardi's less fondly?

Yes. He was the greatest player in the history of the NFL, and one of my top 3-4 favorite players of all time, in any sport. And the 20 years of him with the Patriots was the most sustained enjoyment I've ever gotten out of any team(the Sox radical ups and downs over the same period leave them a close second). So, despite the disagreements over the nature of his announcement, this is a huge day. And though I suspect there's no way in hell he reads SOSH, I'll still take the moment to thank him for all great Sundays/Monday Nights/Thursday Night/Saturday Nights, and wish him Buona Fortuna in his next chapter.

I'm guessing he's working on something with NE but his PR people saw the (insane) reaction and cobbled this together to calm the mob.

Brady retired from the Bucs today.
He retires from the Patriots in the future.

Pretty simple....

only question is if Gronk will do the same soon after....

Brady wants to time his retirement to not interfere with the conference title games

ESPN and social media won't stand for it

Brady (reportedly) in tandem with Kraft to hold a "retirement" from the Patriots, after he retires from the NFL and thanks the Bucs

Social media won't stand for it

Social media sucks

Yep. Your conclusion is true, and it sure didn't need this to confirm it. But I bet you're right about how this went down.

The Patriots part isn't coming from anybody credible yet, so that remains to be seen. At some point, it will happen. I just wonder if he is going to stay away for a little while.

That doesn't change the point ... the kneejerkism of social media sucks

And yet you need the very thing you malign to make your point. You have become what you despise!
