Tom Brady is retired

I don't think he can do that, thought the only way they could spread his dead cap was to come back to TB.
Why not? A one year extension before March 15 - when his contract voids - and a retirement with a post-June 1 effective dead splits the dead money over two years.

Glad he's out. In hindsight the last pass he should have thrown was the Lombardi in the Bucs boat parade but it was hard to know that then.
His stats are Cy Young level bonkers.
View: https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1620777567258279936

Tom Brady in his 20’s: 21,564 passing yards 147 passing TD 3 Super Bowl wins
Tom Brady in his 30’s: 40,018 passing yards 309 passing TD 2 Super Bowl wins
Tom Brady in his 40’s: 27,632 passing yards 193 passing TD 2 Super Bowl wins
A Hall of Fame resumé in each decade.
6,659 pass attempts
4,344 completions
48,663 passing yards
376 touchdowns
73 interceptions
101.1 passer rating
134 wins
19 playoff wins
3 Super Bowls
2 Super Bowl MVPs
1 NFL MVP.

Seems like the statline of a first ballot, slam dunk hall of famer, but it's actually just the result of subtracting Joe Montana's career from Brady's accomplishments. Absolutely insane.

He truly sounds like he's done. I hope for his sake he sticks to his retirement plan this time; taking sacks and hits is not good for one's long term health, and becomes less good as time goes on.

We may see QB's with better peaks (Mahomes comes to mind). But I doubt we will see another QB that inarguably had 3 HoF worthy careers squeezed into one long and glorious one.

I was following Spotrac who initially didn't suggest this as an option but they have since changed their stance so I guess they can take a 10M hit in 23 and a 24M hit in 24.
Wonder if they would rather just blow it up and take the hit in 23 regardless and get a fresh start in 24. Going to be a lean year regardless.

"I wouldn't change a thing"

I know everyone always says this (or "no regrets!"), but I mean, it seems particularly difficult to swallow in this case, given his marriage.

Either way, a happy retirement to the best to ever do it. You made watching the NFL, which has become such a chore, an absolute joy, and made the world behold things they didn't think were possible.

I think it is safe to say Brady was indeed a unicorn as well as the goat. He has 22K more passing yards in his 40s than the next closest QB, Drew Brees. No other QB has thrown for 6K yards in his 40s and Brady passed for 27K yards. When you consider how much guaranteed $$ QBs get these days I don't see anyway another QB gets anywhere near the longevity Brady accomplished. If anything I doubt we see another QB throw for even 5K yards in their 40s, just too much risk and not enough reward.

This chart is just insane.

There is no way to know his marriage was going to work out even if he didn't play last year. That seems silly, like his relationship (or any relationship) can be distilled into one thing.

Regardless, Tom Brady, more than most, shouldn't have too much desire to change the things that have happened to him. Most mortals have things they regret, even if they wouldn't change a thing.

That’s a 2-3 win team now. Full blow up coming.
Yeah they should just take the hit this year, and also trade any viable pieces. They'd have a chance to really load up in the 2024 draft and build from there.

Yeah, the Bucs are screwed for the next few years. So I do think the prospect of swallowing all 35M of the dead money in 2023 is more attractive than it might typically be.

But if you comb through their roster, finding like 60M in cap hits to push out or eliminate is actually challenging if you carry Brady’s full 35M in dead money. They won’t be able to just eat the whole cap pill this year and still field a team; I think they’ll need to push some dollars into 2024.

I’m not mourning the Bucs’ plight at all. Wee.

3 rings in five years. The fourth quarter of the Atlanta SB. The run of 8 consecutive conference championship appearances. Priceless.

Hope he stays retired this time - he’s earned it.

edited.

When you look at 4,694 yards, ~67% completion, 25 TDs to only 9 INTs as a BAD season...you know you're the GOAT. It'll be fascinating to see if he moves to the booth or the studio. The latter would be much easier work (and could rightly kick Terry Bradshaw to the curb, a win/win for all of us), but I'm fascinated to see whether he'd be able to translate his recognition skills to quick color assessments.

Almost assuredly will be a part of Super Bowl Sunday.

Also, will we have the sports radio meltdown over him not mentioning the Patriots in the video?
I sure as shit hope not, he didn't mention anyone. Hell he didn't even mention "the fans". It was his family, his friends, his teammates, his competitors. Not even his coaches. Like not even Felger could get upset by this announcement - god willing.

A fantasy: He signs a 1-day contract with the Pats, comes to training camp and works along side Mac, and then we do the appropriate send-off for him after that "one day" which is an appropriate finale to what he meant to New England. His past departure really left many of us cold, and this would help cement his legacy, which is mostly "New England." Just musing...
I'm sure this or something like this will happen, if and when he's good and ready. If I've learned anything about Kraft and Belichick, they will both give him his space, none of them will feel the urge to rush that.

Right now he has bigger fish to fry. The biggest change in his life since he was about 8 years old is about to happen, he's going to wake up in the morning with no particular need to accomplish anything, and it's weird for normal people - for one of the most obsessively driven people of all time it's going to feel like being in a prison in his own mind for a little while, I'll bet.

That said, I'm looking forward to the parody mock-ups of a Tom Brady dating profile on OurTime.

The video leaves no doubt to me that he really believes it, today at least. He will feel the pull in subsequent days and I think he has some tough days ahead of him. But he seems resolved.

He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who will half ass the TV gig, so that will probably become a priority pretty soon.

Which makes me wonder what their plan was if Brady singed elsewhere.

Spotrac on potential restructure to spread the cap hit:

He’s been really focused on his kids lately, I think he gets it now how fast they grow up.

He's posted a ton of stories to his IG account and one of them is a pic of him with Jack....and Bridget Moynihan, Jack's mom. Which is pretty cool, honestly, that they get along well enough to do that.

I wonder if he will be critical when he is the color commentator. If he is honest I bet he will be excellent at TV, if he tries to be a nice guy he will probably fail.

Question if we have any Bucs fans here: judging solely from his time at the Bucs, is Brady the greatest ever QB for the Bucs? I think only Brad Johnson has a winning record

Derrick Brooks was the furst player that came to mind for greatest Buc of all time.

Edit: Sorry, missed the QB qualifier. In that case, yes, it's Brady

It’s not even a question that TB12 is the greatest QB in Bucs history based on his Bucs tenure alone. Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Jameis Winston, Josh Freeman, Doug Williams…not even close.

Love that retirement video. Much more genuine than last year.

Thank god that Miami player/ownership plan never came to fruition. It shouldn't make a difference but it would have sullied him in my eyes playing for, and owning a part of a division rival.

This whole thing has a 60 for 60 or some sort of ESPN Documentary written all over it in 20 years.

without a doubt ...Brad Johnson was solid, but the defense carried the play for them during their SB run.

Wouldn’t an ownership stake create a conflict with a TV gig?

No snark; genuinely asking.
Yeah good point, it would make more sense for him to be an owner if/when he retires from commentating. You wouldn't want him commenting on a team he owns, or a team that competes with a team he owns, or getting up in arms over a ref decision that might somehow impact him, or whatever. Would be some very awkward questions raised. I think he'll need to pick one or the other, although nothing prevents him from doing one and then the other.

edit: I'm excited about TB the Commentator though. If we thought Romo was Nostradamus the first season or two for his ability to perceive what was coming before it happened and read the game and translate for the viewer... well, Tom Brady's the best who's ever done that, though Peyton partisans might disagree. Tom diagnosing what mistake was made (by the O or the D) on a given play, or how to see what coverage was hinted at and what reaction was made to it, will be absolutely fascinating if you're a total football geek. I dunno if it'll play super well with the general NFL audience - Romo was clearly told to dumb it down a bit - but it will be amazing to finally understand what was going on in his mind all those years, when all we got from him were media-coached banalities.

It's a bummer.

I wish he had quit after 7. Would have been the best ending...in a year it won't matter, but I really thought he was going to come back for one more.

I too, think this is for real and hope it is. I don't want him to enter into Brett Favre territory. I was worried about him to the Dolphins scenario. I think this year just took so much out of him.

So you mean retire a 3rd time?

What's the over-under he'll be playing for San Fran by November?
As pliable as he's proven to be, pushing 46 is still pushing 46. He would have to commit to keeping himself in playing shape, and if he was willing do that, he wouldn't retire.
