He was back in the lineup yesterday, 0-3, now rocking a .135 BA and a .342 OPS.

I guess he's doing better than that guy the Red Sox drafted a few years ago who had like 40 hit less at bats in the GCL and whiffed 75 percent of the time.

NOT invited to Spring Training

Tim Tebow did not get an invitation to the New York Mets' major league spring training camp, despite his manager's wishes.

Instead, he will report to the Mets' minor-league camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla. to continue his pursuit of a major league career. Tebow was omitted from the list of major league camp invitees announced by the Mets on Wednesday.

Low Class-A assignment for Tebow.

Tim Tebow will begin his professional baseball journey in 2017 with the New York Mets' Class A team in Columbia, South Carolina.

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner was told Monday that he will be assigned to the Columbia Fireflies, the Mets' affiliate in the South Atlantic League.
I hope he's buying nutritious food for his teammates

Heh, he homered in his first AB tonight, which would be more impressive if he wasn't playing against kids way way way younger than him.

Really, if he manages to have a positive WAR for a low A team that's quite an accomplishment. I don't understand the hatred and vitriol over this. Well, actually I do. But for those focused on baseball, it's no different from Rob Sermo or whatever getting ABs in Salem this year, that guy is never going to sniff the majors either. But Tebow is putting butts in the seats, so he gets paid more. Capitalism mixed with boyhood fantasies of playing pro baseball. Good story all around as far as I'm concerned.

63 games played, .222/.311/.340 slash line, 3 HR, 22 RBI, nearly as many Ks as total bases, and....he's been promoted from Low-A to "Advanced" A-ball. At this pace, he'll be at Citi Field in no time.

Either they're looking to spread the ticket sales bump around their system or this is solely to make some room on the Columbia roster for some of their new draftees. Or maybe Alderson isn't lying when he claims that Tebow has earned his promotion.

From the article on MLB.com:

Though Tebow was batting just .222 with a .651 OPS in 63 games for Columbia, Alderson said the team has been impressed with his increased exit velocity and isolated power, among other advanced metrics. More than a third of Tebow's hits have gone for extra bases, including three home runs.
I don't think there is published data on minor league exit velocities, but I can look at his ISO numbers to fact check that.

Tebow's Iso for the year: .118
Tebow's Iso for the month of June: .109

He's on fire!

The Mets are using Tebow, Tebow is using the Mets. Neither one cares. They're both getting their share.

The headline on ESPN.com indicates that the everyone is dropping the pretense that this is about anything other than exploitation:

Stats aside, Tim Tebow's promotion gives Mets needed feel-good story
Tim Tebow is the perfect hero in the age of Trump.

I'm surprised how he's doing. 650 OPS in professional baseball is not so embarrassing. The dream was dead before he even began though.

Michael Jordan put up a .556 OPS, but that was in AA. Tebow has a ways to go to get to that level.

On ticket sales bumps, the Columbia Fireflies aren't owned by the Mets, but the St. Lucie Mets are.

.318/.412/.500 in 14 games at High-A. Somewhat impressive.

Age Difference compared to league average...+6.2. Less impressive.

It's not likely to let, but he's playing well right now. All my Christian friends on Facebook are acting like he's Aaron Judge. Someone actually posted that he was going to get a September call up.

One of my co-workers is a rabid Mets fan. He talks about Tebow as if he's Barry Bonds and he is 100% convinced that a September call up is coming. It's rather nauseating.

I've said before that Tebow seems to be a rather admirable person, which does make it hard to root against the man. Mets fans allow me to overcome that inclination.

If the Mets think he'll sell tickets and it won't cause a 40 man roster issue, then why wouldn't they?

Other than the whole 'pissing off lifelong baseball players' thing, but they haven't cared about that so far . . .

Quality post on what would happen if the whole Mets squad were Tim Tebow.

https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/6n50db/_/
"Original Tebow was, in fact, one of the best players on the team, mostly because he stayed healthy the entire year. He finished hitting .182/.218/.275, which is certainly good enough for the Major leagues if you have Ecksteinesque scrappiness, a statistic which OOTP strangely fails to track. He also struck out 215 times, but sabermetrics says that strikeouts aren’t that bad anyways. He’s like Mark Reynolds, if Mark Reynolds had a broken arm in addition to blindness."

They absolutely will. It's like the Metsiest move ever.

It's not like I spend time thinking about it, but as we discussed at the outset of this thread, Tim Tebow isn't a legitimate prospect. (Just like he wasn't a legitimate NFL QB.) He's preying on the feverish adoration of his evangelical fan base to make a quick buck, which seems apt in the age of Trump.

For the whole year to date, he's got a 759 OPS against righthanded pitchers. Lefties are eating him alive. He's as much a "prospect" as 3/4 of Salem's current roster. The whole "he's an embarrassment" schrick is becoming less and less relevant every day.
