As officiating conspiracy theories go, this particular one was a doozy.

An official made a mystifyingly bad offside call that significantly aided Notre Dame in its Sept. 17 home win against Cal. A prominent sportscaster reported that the ACC had suspended the “side judge” who blew the call, only to circle back two days later with a bombshell: Not only was the alleged linesman, Matthew Fitzgerald, not suspended after all, but he worked another Notre Dame game the next week that included another dubious pro-Irish call.

Cal fans on message boards called for an investigation (or worse). Some reached out to sportswriters like this one asking to look into it, especially after word spread that Fitzgerald (because of course, the guy in the bag for the Fighting Irish would be named Fitzgerald) — supposedly worked at Notre Dame’s spring game this year. (He did not.)

It had all the makings of the Scandal of the Year, except for one little problem.

Fitzgerald did not throw either of those flags.
Why is sports media so bad at this? This kind of misattribution happens all of the time. How hard is it to match the giant letter on the back of a guys shirt to his listed position in the box score? Nobody figured out that this story was complete bullshit until the ACC had to step in and release a statement to stop an innocent party from being harassed.

Also, this is ironically part of the reason why officiating isn't better. League execs view officiating as a necessary evil. They just don't want to be harassed. They're going to put the crews on the field that gives them the lowest percentage chance of getting a phone call. If the league's are getting phone calls about plays that are objectively officiating correctly as often as they are getting calls about errors, who gives a shit if the next play is called correctly?

Happy for him. Must be a huge relief to not have to think about uprooting his family and moving somewhere else to chase a gig.

Great for Arcand. Sounds like he knew very soon after he was let go he would be on WEEI. He's had 4 Sunday Services on Soundcloud / other Podcasts and was pretty sure up front. If he's on Saturday's I'll vastly prefer him over Big Jim. I do like Gasper though.

I wonder if there a bizarro world where T&R go to WEEI after this contract is up, Keefe & Someone on Mid-Days, Arcand on afternoons.

Former Pat James White was doing color for the national radio broadcast of the Bills-Vikings game today and was quite good.

Right on cue, the day the Sox lose Bogaerts, there's a Bob Hohler not-so-complimentary article about the Patriots. An article that could have been written more or less any time.

Joe Murray is the 3rd chair on T&R this AM. He's bitching about how he's been a part timer for 15 years. So, he's not the one taking over for Adam Jones.

He’s hammered that point a ton on the air. It just comes off as whiny entitlement.

Fred and Rich have more or less told him that he has to pay his dues - go elsewhere, take a chance, and start from the beginning if that’s what he wants to do for a career.

The problem is he doesn't know when to turn off being "the gambling guy".

He was doing Pats post-game yesterday and about 4 minutes in, right after probably their biggest win of the year, he's telling me why he bet Miami 1H. It's like, we are minutes removed from our biggest win and

1) we are talking about gambling and
2) hearing the guy hosting Pats' post game bet the opponent.

I'm sure there are hundreds of outlets who do gambling talk 24/7. Go to those.

NY Post had a story yesterday that Michael Kay is considering retiring from his ESPN Radio show after his current contact ends this year but nothing has been confirmed yet:
https://nypost.com/2023/01/05/michael-kay-considering-retiring-from-his-espn-new-york-show/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&utm_source=NYPTwitter&utm_medium=SocialFlow

Then today Kay on air Kay threatened to fire an other show's producer with "one phone call."
https://www.mediaite.com/sports/ny-sports-talk-radio-host-threatens-to-call-boss-to-have-producer-of-another-show-fired-one-phone-call-and-you-would-be-on-unemployment/
“Do you realize, Ray, that all I’d have to do is make one phone call, and you would be on the unemployment line,” Kay angrily said.

Almost 2 weeks into 2023 and no Jones' yet on EEI. Is he definitely going? Also doesn't seen TSH has replaced him yet, but I believe Joe Murray has sat in every day (that I've listened to. May have missed a day or two)

Pretty sure a lot of local 6pm newscasts skip sports, especially those that aren't in a pro or major college sports market. They barely have sports departments at all anymore. I think the stations up here in Portland all have one sports guy each, and even they aren't exclusively covering sports.

I do see how it's noteworthy for a station like WBZ in a market like Boston to eliminate sports, but it isn't all that surprising these days.

I’m not a die hard fan, but it was a bummer to see that the Titus and Tate podcast broke up. Titus went to Barstool while Tate went back to the Ringer. Hopefully they both do well, I really enjoy them every time I listen.

Oh I didn't even realize the show was still going on and I was an occasional listener on the Ringer as well as in their target college bball audience, so maybe the writing was on the wall. Anyway, your post caught my attention after I heard Tate advertising 'One Shining Podcast' ahead of the Simmons podcast yesterday. I am hoping this leads to more "fun" coverage of the college game rather than the Ringer's current coverage geared only to NBA draft prospects. Titus and Tate's previous iteration on the Ringer was enjoyable for the uniquely college bball and tournament storylines like Evil Coach K, Sister Jean, etc. In fact I remember a 1st round watch-along stream Simmons did with buddies maybe late at ESPN or early on in the Ringer which was great. I am all for more March Madness content...

A summary/highlight of what exactly "scorched earth" means might entice viewers and/or discussion, but like Lose, I'm not about to watch a video from this assclown even if he's going after another assclown.

Minihane is mad because Gerry retweeted a Tweet from a swimmer who is against Lea Thomas competing, who was responding to something Megan Rapinoe said, with the swimmer saying that because Rapinoe is gay, she can't have a daughter to love. Minihane is mad that Gerry would endorse such a position, since he himself has adopted children that he loves very much. Kirk then says he will never talk to Gerry again and that anybody who goes on Gerry's show (what show does Callahan have now? Something on Rumble?) won't be on his show. I suspect Gerry will be on Kirk's show pretty soon so they can "fight" on air about this.

It comes across like Callahan finally said something that personally offended Kirk and now he is big mad about it. I'm sure Kirk was cool dunking on plenty of other people Callahan has ridiculed before.
