John Sterling doesn't deserve his own thread, but how on earth did he get this so wrong after the ball hit the wall? I thought it was out, as did the TV announcers, but it was clear as day that the ball hit the Monster.

When he gets into his whole "it is high, it is far" schtick, I picture him standing up and gesturing wildly like a bad community theater actor overdoing Shakespeare. As such, I bet he stopped watching the field once the first "It is" passed his lips. He's always been a guy whose description of the action rarely ever syncs up with what is actually happening, but since he's on radio people hardly notice. This is hardly the first time he's called a HR that wasn't.

With the way cancel culture is now, Sean McDonough's days may be numbered.

Maybe nobody outside of Farhan Zaidi and [Gabe] Kapler, they’ve just done an unbelievable job and who knows, maybe we can have a World Series reunion," Flemming responded.
After a very clear and correct pronunciation of Zaidi's full name from Will Flemming — who, yes, is the brother of Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming — McDonough responded, "Their GM's name is 'High Anxiety'

Making fun of someone's name is pretty weak sauce, but if Sean apologizes, I think this will pass quickly. I suspect Sean is a politically conservative guy, so I hope he's smart enough to apologize rather than turning this into something more by complaining about being canceled or liberals being the "fun police."

In other news, don't miss the Slow News Day with Jim Nance today. He's a good interview.

Edit: Nantz, dammit.

I assume you mean this guy, Nantz, 45005 since this one, Nance, 45006 is dead. ;)

Adam Jones last night on the postgame radio was actually saying he was mad the Red Sox won because he was wrong about them. I have no problem with a host not being a fanboy but I was shocked by how over the top bad he was the other way. I don't listen much at night and won't again.

Of course it’s all shtick, but man that is beyond pathetic. Honestly, how does this total troll still have this position on the air in this town? A first year intern could do what he does.

Cheap and they could throw any nobody on at night given how sports obsessed this town is and get ratings; and considering from fall through late Spring half to 2/3 of his nights are largely filled by Celtics or Bruins games instead.

Steve Somers last night at WFAN is Friday
Oh wow. That one really hits home. He accompanied me through more than one college all-nighter. When Somers gave way to Imus, it was time to start panicking.

It's funny - I was flipping stations in the car today and stumbled across the Jim Rome Show. He's another guy who's been around for absolutely forever. I remember him being so popular in San Diego that a friend of a friend had a CD Rome's station had put out of his hottest takes. I just found it on eBay -- track 14 is "Lucchino Can't Understand." LOL.

Steve Somers last show is on now. Mad dog is calling in in about 10 minutes. Not sure if Seinfeld has called yet. I think he’s on til 2am.

He will be back on Monday at 1pm for a goodbye hour , and hopes to pop up time to time as a fill in host.

Not sure where else to put this, but a pet peeve of mine is something that football writers seem to be doing with more regularity and I can’t stand it. Anyways, so many of these writers it seems want to show up. There articles reference things that 99% of the readers don’t understand. “ The Pats excelled when they were in a cover 2, bear stout, over side defensive alignment”. They lace their articles with references to systems that probably 1% of the readers, maybe former coaches or players, would have any idea what they are talking about. It feels like they are showing off. It just doesn’t relate with the readers. Many do it, Jerry Thornton from Barstool is a brutal offender of this, but there are many others.

Boston media is a wasteland for the most part... there are some shining Diamonds, but majority is just trash that looks to shit on wins in any way they can find...

I think this example is fine since it's Matt Chatham - who knows what he's talking about - on Twitter, but I thought of your post when I read this:

Somers carried me through some all-nighters too. Over night, under the covers schmoozing S-P-O-R-T-S.

If you remember Jim Rome's early days, you probably remember Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton and the greatest 15 minutes of sports radio, or whatever he called his open, on the mighty 690. (And, pre-internet, it actually was pretty great). If I remember it right, Rome made some of his early bones spoofing Hamilton.

Pete Thamel is taking the Jeff Passan/Woj route and leaving Yahoo for ESPN. He is being hired to be their college football insider ala Woj, Passan, and Schefter. Like Passan, he will write a lot more than the others.

Thamel is excellent. It was great that he was at Yahoo totally scooping everyone at ESPN on college sports news. And I really enjoy his podcast with Pat Forde and Dan Wetzel - I’m guessing that goes away now.
