Leaving in a bit to the studio :)
Does Maggie Gray on WFAN always use so many pop culture references? I listened to the show for just a few minutes yesterday, and she made at a minimum five pop culture references, from The Undertaker to Space Balls to I forget what else. Not talking about those things, but using them as references to sporting events that had happened over the weekend. Like if Dennis Miller had only basic cable.

Ok, that’s funny. Somehow I don’t see Greg Bedard or Jeff Howe getting that spot. Coincidentally, Brady Sr. was quoted just yesterday opining to Guregian that BB ‘is on a little bit of a hot seat right now.‘

Ya I doubt BB is on any hot seat. He’d have to have 2-3 more losing seasons to even have his seat warm.

Chris Jones tweeted something years ago that really pissed me off, so I stopped following him on Twitter. I no longer remember what it was that he tweeted and I've started following him again because he shares some great stories on his feed. His Ricky Williams story today is both great and a little sad given that it would never happen today. The story starts with this tweet: View: https://twitter.com/EnswellJones/status/1355214564703526914

Living outside of Boston tmedia market there was nothing worse than listening to the local sports radio, and they were doing something Boston sports related, and then hearing our next guest "Gary Tanguay"... cause he would always take the negative side of the story. The local sports would defend the Boston teams mroe than Tanguay.

Looks like Tanguay is getting more airtime at Weei and Nick Cattle's time is diminished. Tanguay and Wiggy might be the dumbest combo ever.

For reasons I can't really fathom, I sprung for Cousin Sal's book. It's basically what you'd expect -- a compilation of stories with some laugh-out-loud moments, but without much rhyme or reason, and the last 1/4 or so is mailed-in padding. In a way, it's exactly the book you'd expect from Sal. I've spent $20 in worse ways, but not too many.

Edit: Actually, I know exactly why I bought the book -- Sal and Simmons said that if you've listened to their podcasts for "free" for years, the least you can do is buy Sal's book. Which I thought was fair.

Very random idea, but I'd love to see an MLB team try cutting a deal with YouTube where the team provides the video and allow users to add the audio for a game broadcast. You could set it up on a revenue share so that the team and the users split the ad revenue.

That way, someone like Fangraphs or Jomboy or some random washed up old pro or whoever could all "broadcast" the same game, and I can pick the type of coverage I want.

"NBA legend" Brian "White Mamba" Scalabrine gets challenged by a HS kid with predictable results:

View: https://streamable.com/l7jkza
Just further proves that even the 12th guy on an NBA bench (or 26th on a MLB bench or 53rd guy on an NFL roster) is still an elite athlete in their game. Scal is how many years retired and he's still got enough game to beat an average high schooler?

All you need to know about how good NBA players are vs the general public is that Semi Ojeleye is the all-time scoring leader in the history of Kansas high school basketball. Semi Ojeleye, who came into the NBA with basically no offensive skills whatsoever, was an unstoppable scoring machine in high school.

This Dave Barry article in 1992 (!) was the first time I realized this
https://www.miamiherald.com/living/liv-columns-blogs/dave-barry/article1938204.html

Of course all this is relative. Compared with Godzilla, King Kong had limited physical gifts. Even the most marginal NBA player is an absurdly better athlete than an ordinary person.

I think T&R did a bit years ago when they took tape of "the best" street ballers in Boston and found the best one and Scal went against them and absolutely torched them without even breaking a sweat

Tom Boswell is retiring from the Wash Post after 52 years. Farewell column is here, including a bit about the 2004 ALCS which he calls "the best sporting event I’ve ever experienced."

And this is the story he wrote about it:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/2004/10/19/octobers-great-boston-marathon/f2ea607e-5b14-49eb-8080-61baae567d87/?itid=lk_inline_manual_45

which included this unfortunate mistake (at least in that linked version):
But as soon as the new day arrived, the Red Sox' star-crossed luck in this ALCS switched utterly. Millar walked and eventually scored to tie the game and send the warriors into extra innings.

I had no idea that he wrote an article before WS G6 about how McNamara needed to seriously think about benching Bill Buckner.

He wasn't wrong. I loved Billy Buck, but he had no business being on the field during the World Series, especially the road games. And it's not like they didn't have a good alternative for 1B. Don Baylor, the team leader in HR that season, got 1 AB during the games at Shea. Imagine the 2013 Series if Ortiz sat Games 3, 4, and 5?

For all the notoriety and blame that Buckner and Stanley got for Game 6, John fucking McNamara blew that series with the way he (mis)managed.

Find the flaw in the ointment:

McNamara had used Dave Stapleton at first base at the end of every postseason victory. But Stapleton was not on the field at the end of Game 6, and he never played in the majors again.

‘‘Buckner was the best first baseman I had,’’ McNamara says on the show. “And Dave Stapleton has taken enough shots at me since that he didn’t get in that ballgame, but Dave Stapleton’s nickname was Shakey. And you know what that implies. I didn’t want him playing first base to end that game, and it was not any sentimental thing that I had for Billy Buck.’’

He was a stubborn son of a bitch too. He never admitted any possible fault with his choices in those games, whether it was playing Buckner or pulling Clemens. He was perfect. Just ask him.
NESN has him on video, but I can’t find it online. “My pitcher asked out of that game.”

I found this, though.
“He came off the mound in the bottom of the [seventh] inning and we were waiting there at the steps to congratulate him you know, getting out of the seventh and he came down the steps and he said, ‘That’s all I can pitch.’ Quote unquote,” McNamara said.

“And my answer to him was, “You gotta be s***ting me.” And he said “No,” and he showed us his finger … where he had the start of a paper tear on his middle finger and — well, correct this right here and now – he had no blister whatsoever, and how that got started I don’t know. But it spread rapidly and it continued over the next two years [that] the blister took him out of the ball game. And that is not the case. As sure as I’m sitting here.”
And yet he sent Clemens to the on deck circle to hit for himself after that “conversation.” It’s on video. Greenwell came out to pinch hit after he was already on deck.

(But I’m not bitter.)

Yes!.

And I mean that with great respect, not in celebration of him leaving (although he probably should have).

One great Marv moment was during a Knick playoff (had to be a while ago, that's for sure) game.

The camera was panning the VIP seats for celebrities and Marv would make note of each person the camera found.

Then, the camera focused on Woody Allen and his then-new bride (or soon-to-be bride); which, of course, was causing a furor.

Marv said nothing, which was a real shame. Woody and his indescretions aside, I wanted very badly to hear him say "Soon Yi" as only Marv could have said that name.

Marv's performance Tuesday night was on the same level as 42 year old Willie Mays falling down in the outfield in the 1973 postseason.

Jeffrey Toobin returned to CNN today to explain that he didn't think he was on the call when he took it out. He thought he had turned off the camera and that the Zoom call was over. Just an accident.
This was deeply moronic and indefensible. But I mean, that -- that is part of -- that is part of the story. And you know, I have spent the seven subsequent months, miserable months in my life, I can certainly confess, trying to be a better person. I mean, in therapy, trying to do some public service, working in a food bank, which I certainly am going to continue to do.

I went to my first Sox game since September 2019 last night, and driving home from the game, I reflexively turned on WEEI for the postgame show to hear Cora's press conference, expecting to turn it off as soon as the first moronic caller came on to blast Pivetta or whatever. Instead, I was treated to probably 15 straight minutes of fact-based analysis, including very relevant stats about individual performances by JD Martinez and the Sox bullpen. The host had clearly prepared for his role, and delivered the information coherently and with a conversational tone. For some reason, I did not catch his name, but I believe it is Brian Barrett. I admit I have not listened to anything more than a game broadcast for a few years, but is this what WEEI is offering now on a regular basis before/after Sox games? It was soooo much better than what I had come to expect from years of Sarandis, Mikey, and Rish.

Not in the sports world but MSNBC's Maddow might be taking her talents elsewhere. I'll guess this article is a contract negotiation piece but they really don't have a replacement for her.
View: https://twitter.com/maxwelltani/status/1425868273275523080

Rachel Maddow is seriously considering leaving MSNBC when her contract expires early next year.

Update: she re-signed with MSNBC
To $30 mill a year.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/inside-the-massive-msnbc-deal-paying-rachel-maddow-to-work-less?ref=home
Deal was orchestrated by former ESPN president Mark Shapiro, now a huge agent in Hollywood, which was his true calling.
