Not many....she's massively less qualified than Goodell was, and he was significantly underqualified himself.  They need a heaveyweight, Tagliabue-style.

That's a ridiculous statement.

Goodell may have used connections to get the job (that's pretty common in any industry), but he worked for the NFL his whole career before becoming commish. In that capacity, he gained significant experience leading an organization. The guy started at the bottom (Jets intern) and took on increasing responsibility over a 20+ year period before becoming commish.

None of that means Goodell was a great choice. His recent gaffes speak for themselves, but Buckley deserves to be called out for thinking one of his fellow journalists is equipped for the job bc she has asked tough questions and is knowledgeable about football. Her experience is mostly irrelevant to the job; there are literally thousands of men and women with better qualifications.

I understand how he phrased it, but I really don't think that Buck was literally nominating her. I think he was giving her praise for her performance and for showing a better grasp of the issues Friday than Goodell did. That's all. Take a deep breath.

Wasn't trying to make a federal case - just thought it was a dumb comment.

I generally like Buckley.

It bears noting that Goodell's lack of any work experience outside of the NFL is a significent impedement to his ability to be commisioner. He has zero larger perspective and that killed him on the Rice issue.

Speaking of insider connections it is helpful when your step-mom is Diane Sawyer, and you're trying to get a job in the media business.

True, but she did start out as an intern at the Washington Post under Kornheiser/Wilbon, and stayed at the Washington Post for nearly eight years. She's paid her dues.

What are you talking about?

Rachel Nichols' step-mother isn't Diane Sawyer.  Her husband's is.  The husband she got married to after already being at the Washington Post.

Sorry to read this morning that (former Globe sportswriter) Adam Kilgore is moving on to a more prominent position in the Washington Post sports department after 5 years as the primary Nats beat writer.  He's a great beat writer and his lede for game 7 of this year's World Series came as close to vintage 70's-era Gammons as anyone I've read recently.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals clung this October to the well-founded belief they owned the most dominant bullpen in the major leagues. On Wednesday night, Madison Bumgarner emerged from the gates of the left field corner at Kauffman Stadium and informed them of their mistake. The best bullpen in baseball, Bumgarner let them know, with no shortage of menace, dangled from his colossal left shoulder. The best bullpen in baseball was him.

Every Royal was a little boy once, and they all dreamed of standing at the plate in Game 7 of the World Series. Childhood fantasies do not include facing a 6-foot-5 force of nature with an invisible cut fastball and malice pulsing through his veins. They do not account for a little boy who grew up in western North Carolina and became a crusher of dreams.

“Yeah,” Royals Manager Ned Yost said. “It was hopeless.”

Anyone know where Pete Shepperd is?  He doesn't seem to be involved with Glen's show any longer.

Geez, time has bee unkind to Greg Dickerson. He's on CSNNE right now and looks like he's gained 100 pounds and is either wearing a hairpiece or has the worst haircut I've ever seen.

Hmm, I wasn't aware he had those problems.  I wasn't trying to be snarky (although it reads like that), I just hadn't seen the guy on TV in a couple of years and honestly without the voice I wouldn't have recognized him.  Is that why he hasn't been as visible?

Yep.  I have epilepsy.  The medications can really make you pack on the pounds and sleep terribly.  It can take 2-3 years before you find the right combination of meds.  Not to mention not being able to drive for 3 months after each seizure.

But the weird thing is he's had Tourettes all his adult life and he was diagnosed with epilepsy well over three years ago. Its only been the last year that he looks so awful. Probably gained 50 pounds, terrible acne, and looks 50 years old.

It almost seems like he just fell apart after losing his job as Celts sideline reporter.

Edit - Just to clarify, I'm not saying the medication isn't awful and can't cause huge problems. I'm merely pointing out that he looked okay for a couple years after his diagnosis. I'm a dick, but not so much so that I'd mock epileptics or dismiss their issues.

I was diagnosed in May 2011 and it's only been within the last 2 months that I'm back to my normal weight.  The acne is most likely a side effect of the medication.  There are a lot that can cause rashes or hives or depression.  I'm surprised he's on tv though to be honest.

I know this doesn't add much, but he is a hack. It's embarrasing that a journalist can spew the things he does and be considered a professional.

I thought Volin was very good for a while (his notes page is still solid), but he's been trending down and lost his damn mind this week.

Ryan Johnston is awful. I'm convinced he wants to be Mike Greenberg.

Tom Curran and Scott Kacsmar from Football Outsiders are having some kind of extended slap fight on Twitter.  I'm struggling to figure out what precipitated it -- I think things were already going sideways when this exchange happened.  Kacsmar seems very whiny and Curran seems to be from the "numbers aren't football" school, so no one's really winning.

I'm a little surprised Gary Washburn hasn't garnered more complaints here. It's true that he is rather boring in his ineptness. Other than voting for Carmelo for MVP, he hasn't ruffled too many feathers.

The thing is, he's a terrible writer. Awkward phrasing, specious analysis and flat-out non-sentences are strewn throughout his columns. I can't imagine what he hands to his editor sometimes.

Anyway, I just wish it were more fun to read about the Celtics in the Globe.

Baxter Holmes was the best sports writer in the city while he was here. It's a shame he moved on so quickly.

His September feature story on Marcus Smart is fantastic: http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/09/28/smart/nqpr3bsP2P3t8RqGdXXX5O/story.html

Keith Law brought attention to this Marc Engel column the other day:

http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/mac-engel/article9760319.html

My deep annoyance at this influx of numbers and situational stats has been met with scorn and criticism because this batch of nerds refuses to admit that, at its core, sport is simple. That’s why we love it in the first place. See ball, hit ball. Ball go in hoop. Ball go across line.
The other irritation is the claim by these myopic dorks that there is no other way around the math.

Enjoy.

Not only does he bring the diaspora the sound and feel of home, but also he extraordinarily informative, interesting and smooth in doing it. I'm referring to Jim Calhoun covering the Tournament for ESPN.

I've told this story before, so stop me if you've heard it. It was 1996 and I was sitting in my office at Rolling Stone. Hunter S. Thompson was in town celebrating the 25th anniversary of his wild and lysergic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I was busy trying to wrap up the latest issue. He was partying with staffers and others in a nearby conference room. I opted out.

Dennis Dodd all salty about Aaron Rodgers celebrating on the court with Wisconsin and refusing interviews.

[twitter]dennisdoddcbs[/twitter]
"I can guarantee you this will be taken up by NCAA and USBWAA. A Rodgers shouldn't be in a position for us to be blown off."

edit....sorry, can't do twitter very well.

I wonder how MLB and/or the Globe feel about RSDD creating (by recording his TV with his phone) and posting Vines of Sox highlights on Twitter.

This site that collects Theo-hate is pretty great.

The site led me to review Nick Vlahos's twitter feed.  He clearly has it in for Theo.  If you like "a plan is not good if the result is at all sub-optimal" logic, he's your guy.

Buster Olney shared his 7 moves the Dodger should make. Here they are:
1) Re-sign Zack Greinke
really? I think they should let his 225 ERA+ just walk without trying to bring him back

2) Decide whether Mattingly is the manager they want
um, this is not a move. Way to take a stand, Buster

3) Add another high-end starting pitcher
because it is so easy to just accumulate aces

4) Pick a direction with Puig
see Mattingly comment

5) Retain Howie Kendrick
at least Buster took a stand on this one

6) Collect more bullpen depth
see starting pitcher comment

7) Figure out how to build some better clubhouse culture
yes, that was a real suggestion from Buster

This is worse than the worst message board "offseason plan" post I have ever seen. Even worse than the crazy ideas thread. Talk about mailing it in.

Kind of a different story here, but Herald reporter Bruce Lerch died Sunday evening. I knew Bruce fairly well through his covering girls hockey, and he was a super guy. He recognized how hard HS players and coaches worked, and he covered the games and teams as if he was covering the pros. Great advocate for the players and coaches, especially in girls hockey and lacrosse. Dan Ventura had a nice piece on Bruce yesterday. I don't know if anyone here had a chance to interact with him, but he'll be sorely missed.

He was a student of mine. You don't meet many like Bruce. He took his work seriously, he treated young athletes and coaches with respect, and he never took himself seriously. Smart, kind, funny, always looking to help. I am heart-broken.

That link is to Chris Gasper's story on yesterday's Pats game. The level of snark is off the charts. The gist of the article is that the Pats did not play well enough and should be performing at a higher level down the stretch. No one would actually disagree with that. But I guess Gasper thinks he needs to come off as a total douche bag to make his point. Weird.

One example:

Then it was time for the Patriots to resume situational football.

On third and 8 from the Tennessee 31 with 1:56 left in the half, the Patriots curiously called a run for White. To the uninitiated, it looked like mercy or folly.

No, it was an opportunity to practice kicking into the open end of the stadium in chilly winter weather, of course. Stephen Gostkowski banged home a 43-yarder. They probably should have worked on the drop-kick there.
Apologies if there is already a Gasper thread.

I read this in the Sun Chronicle today by Mark Farinella, interspersed between a bunch of tongue-in-cheek Christmas gifts to local sports figures:

“Gisele Bundchen hasn’t shipped anything back yet, but I’ll bet she has her marriage certificate wrapped up already for shipment to a lawyer on the day her husband announces his retirement from pro football.”

Why would anyone write something like that?
