That sucks. Steve is good people. I used to go to many games in the 1980s and early 90s and he was always fun to talk with

Just talked to a friend, Steve was the longest continuous writer covering one team in the country at 35 years

Roenick also alleges that the network retaliated against him because he was an outspoken supporter of President Trump in 2016.

"Anti-straight" discrimination? Wouldn't that imply he was fired because he's straight, rather than because he's a bigoted asshole who said some disgusting things that his bosses didn't approve of? What a buffoon.

Yeah, unclear. I'm sure all of his very standard legal language will go over well in a court of law. Maybe OAN will hire him.

Ok let me get this straight, a straight white male, ex-athlete media member with millions in the bank is fired for completely inappropriate public comments and he sues?

I assume he's suing under NY state law, as there's no federal protection for this sort of "political retaliation" by a private employer.

Barkley, Draymond Green and Jamele Hill are in NBA TV now. Fascinating. Green realizing his basketball camps gave nothing back to his neighborhood. He needs to get politically involved.

Barkley sort of supported NFL owners...Hill and Green took him task for that. NFL has no guaranteed contracts, Green said.

Barkley...yea, but we have white guys saying BLM!

Green- where will they be in 6 months when it's not cool anymore? You can't say you don't know. That's on you. You choose not to know or care about racism.

Edit: Jamele Hill may be divisive, but she is more right that wrong.

His non-apology is disgusting.

He's not sorry for his words. He's sorry his words were caught on a hot mic.

He apologized to Fox, not to the viewers and listeners or the people he marginalized.

Thom Brennaman can go fuck himself.
I'm sure he will, as soon as he's done speaking at the RNC.

Michael Smith and Michael Holley getting an afternoon show on Peacock starting in September. The show WEEI should have created all along...
I'm assuming this will be a half hour to hour show which will be good for Holley. During his 4 hour radio shows where there was a major "topic of the day" it seemed he suffered from analysis paralysis, but was great with quick take topics. Besides money, his comfort with a quick hit format is probably why he eschewed radio to host at NBCS Boston. (And to get away from Dale! Half kidding?)

Of course Smith and Holley should have had a radio show long ago. As cynical as I am I always overestimate radio management. Two black guys in Boston hosting a show together would be too niche an audience and not get numbers, but put 5 white men on the same show during drive time and no problemo. That genre has stayed stuck in exactly the same era since its initial heyday in the '90s, no evolution whatsoever. Or maybe it has nationally, but besides slightly different approaches like T&R, definitely not in Boston.

It's three hours (3-6 p.m.) daily.

Oof, well there's the hope that the wider range of topics (sports, entertainment, politics) will keep the wheels from spinning in place. I'll check it out in any case, since starting WFH my radio consumption is non-existent in favor of all podcasts or youtube streams. This will fill a good afternoon void for something live after spending the early part of the day listening to (mostly) pre-recorded podcasts.

FWIW, we have talked about this a bit here and there but I think the game has passed Sickels by anyway, there are a lot of people doing what he does now with a lot more energy and enthusiasm for it.
Not sure if exactly where to post this but it is heartbreaking and certainly had to have impacted his energy and enthusiasm (not calling out your post JA, this was just the most recent quote about Sickels that came up when I searched).

John Sickels on why he left baseball writing:

Yeah, I read that earlier. I don't mind you bumping my post for that, I think Sickels himself would probably agree with it and now we know why.

That is a tough read. I loved Sickels, he was really the guy who got me interested in following prospects and he was super accessible to the entire minorleagueball.com community he helped foster. His work was so fun to read that I guess I must have projected that he was having fun writing it as well - it's stunning to see that wasn't the case. Whatever he goes on to, I hope he finds a lot of happiness and success. He has certainly earned it.

I've been a big Mike Reiss fan since his MetroWest Daily News Patriots beat and he's been one of my go-to reporters for years. I thought his phrasing in last night's practice notes tweets was in very poor taste though:

"...but one thing that stood out from this session was Bill Belichick cracking the whip..."

Cracking the whip? In 2020? The white coach/de-facto GM cracking the whip on a predominantly black team is just...I don't know, it was jarring when I read it. This isn't meant to be some sort of cancel culture thing. I genuinely enjoy Mike's work and will continue to consume his content. But I do expect better phrasing, particularly from professional media members. While I think it's clear what Mike was getting at and I'm confident it didn't come from a bad place, there's phrases, terminology and metaphors that have long outlasted their expiration date. Cracking the whip is one. YMMV.

I think that's a fair point. Past experience says you'd get a thoughtful response from him if you drop him an email (or however he communicates).

I had always thought that phrase referred to whipping a horse to make it go faster. Quick googling seems to back me up on this one, dating it back to 1600's England.

However, that wasn't comprehensive and I wouldn't be at all shocked to find there's more history behind it. Still, I'd give Reiss a pass on this one.

Yep, Mike is the absolute best and I'm sure if you brought it up with him directly he'd take it to heart and give a thoughtful response (and possible apology).

I'd always associated the idiom/metaphor with slavery, but comparing the players to animals isn't any better.

I did send Mike a note. I do think he's a good guy who probably put the column together pretty quickly without thinking about it too heavily.

I sent him an email through his website, and he was quick to respond, even as my message was about how he constructed his Tweets

Boston’s Channel 25 is a Fox affiliate, but you’d have to pay close attention during their local news as there are no Fox logos anywhere, and they generally identify as “Boston 25”, more than using their WFXT or Fox logos.

watching the news this AM they referred to the Sox playing a road game at Fenway against the Jays being unique, and that the game was postponed in Buffalo “Due to protests in that city”. I thought that was a pretty “Fox-y” way to refer to the players refusing to play after he Jacob Blake shooting

Weekend morning news, so I'm assuming it was a regular anchor reading the story rather than a sports reporter. Wouldn't surprise me if they or the copy writer saw that it was a make up of a game postponed due to protest and didn't realize it was the players who did the protesting.

they were pretty public a few years back about moving away from the Fox brand

I just think you're reading or watching too much into it. Like the other poster said it was a weekend news anchor reading the story not a regular sports anchor. Chances are the news anchor probably wasn't paying too much attention when the actual protest and postponement happened. Sometimes we read and project what isn't there. You'd be surprised how many news anchors are not sports fans.

That was priceless. Thanks for posting it.
I hope the fact that you could spare a moment to do so means that you're not in immediate fire danger.

Immediate, yes. If you could look out my window at right now, though, you'd see ... well, you wouldn't see anything because of the smoke, but yesterday was better than the day before.
