I assume this isn't going to happen because presumably the Jets got assurances that DT would actually play for them before making the trade, but if I were him I'd seriously just consider retirement at this point. It's one thing to agree to a short-term deal with the Patriots where you get to play with Brady and chase one final ring, and a very different thing to have to play for the Jets and a relatively inexperienced QB in Darnold.

He easily could have retired by now. I’m sure he still wants to play and the Jets are probably offering decent PT. And their defense stinks so lots of throwing.

Pity trade. Pats think so little of the Jets chances they're willing to send them a player.

I plan to make a good deal of hay with this with my Jets fan friends.

Eh. 6th rounder? What good are they?

Seriously though. Surprised by this. Would have liked to keep him around for depth but he probably would rather have a role he can play somewhere

The depth is Harry and Cam Meredith both on IR/PUP respectively

With the Jets, that's basically a 5th rounder a anyway.

Sounds like Bill was doing Thomas a solid. Probably asked ahead of time if he would be OK with a trade, and Thomas probably said yes. Thomas was already behind Gordon, Jules, Dorsett, and Myers on the depth chart. Mainly due to injury, but still.

Wait, what?

This is horrible. Trading to a division rival for a late pick?
Crippling. Belichick may have actually lost the locker room with this move, especially when Thomas dominates New England and has a huge bounce back season.

Belichick has clearly lost it.

The Patriots didn't have enough cap room to get through the year. They had to make room somehow, and they don't have a ton of options left.

This gets them nearly $3 million without pushing anything to next year and they do it by opening a roster spot at a position where they just added a player. And they got a pick. This worked out as well as could have been expected. I really wanted him to succeed here and it would have been great to see him return to his pre-injury form with Brady throwing him the ball. But the Patriots are without many options right now with respect to getting through the year under the cap.

The partner is weird, but the trade makes sense cap wise. My second thought was immediately this:

I can’t wait for this pick to turn into something really valuable
And if nothing else, I'll enjoy Jets fans having a o give any thought the the Pats drafting TB12 2.0 with their sixth rounder in exchange for the reconstructed Achilles of Demarius Thomas.

They are clearly making room for Gronk later this season.

The Jets signed Berrios as well. Sad how thirsty they are for anything that has the "Patriots' aura"

I do feel a little bad for DT - he signs with Pats, clearly makes a positive impression on TB12, they develop a nice relationship and the team looks thin at WR. THEN, all of a sudden, BAM! Rookies look good. Gordon. AB. And, what’s more, he never even got to catch a single pass from Brady, even in a pre season game. He only played with Stidham, right?

I only see upside for the Jesters as Thomas played for Gase in Denver. Our Ceiling is below the Pats floor unless Brady takes an injury.

We are not competing with the Pats so it seems like this is BB getting something for a guy he wasn’t going to play.

I don't get why people care about trading in the division. Yes the Jets are slightly better now, but the 6th rounder means they will be slightly weaker in the future. It evens out. Get the best value you can for a player, no matter what division.

I don’t care about who we trade to. I care about not having Thomas as an option if we end up having to cut this guy
