I'm going to ask it here, but I bet it gets ignored b/c this thread is pinned and no one pays attention to pinned threads.

What are people's favorite hockey-related internet sites? Either for browsing, news, analysis, or general entertainment. I'll post a couple of mine, but I'm looking for more to put into the rotation.

Here's where I've been going:

The Hockey News (awesome site)
Stanley Cup of Chowder
Bruins Blog(obviously)
Boston Bruins Blog
Hockey's Future

What else is out there?

Here. Otherwise, I've got nothing. But I'm not ignoring you!

edit: Now that I think about it, I also read the hockey threads in the "Sports Argument Stadium" forum on Something Awful. A large cross-over of posters from the HF Boards so not always the best noise-to-signal ratio, but it can at least be pretty funny.

Figured this deserved a bump while I was playing with pinned threads. Anyone got any other suggestions?

I really liked the "special teams adjusted goals against per 30 shots number" part - it seems to identify the best goalies from last year quite accurately in my estimation.
Except that it's a totally bogus number. I appreciate that teams spend more time at even strength compared to on the power play, but goals scored against while down a man aren't suddenly worth four times as much. What possible reason could there be for deciding to do this?

Say that you have two goalies. Goalie A is, for whatever reason, is 5% (made up number) better than average during even strength play and 5% worse than average during the penalty kill. Even though he faces more time and more shots at even strength (and will therefore let in fewer goals per game AND per shot) this stat will measure him as worse.

There is really no scenario in which this statistic is as good as either save percentage or the already redundant goals per 30 shots that they started with, both of which represent the same already-flawed way of looking at things.

What next? We are going to mark down David Wright because he doesn't hit well in the second inning?

Walk through Loui's last three years and track where the majority of his shots come from versus where the majority of his goals come from.  He's like a living embodiment of the "get to the front of the net and good things will happen" adage.  Nearly every goal is scored below and between the dots.

Also, I'm pretty sure if you mapped Dave Anderychuk's career shots/goals this way the ensuing ball of red in front of the net would burn holes in your retinas.

Between here and everywhere.
So this is long, but pretty interesting - especially for those of us who play, or continue to play:

A student wrote his masters thesis on the backhand shot in hockey - applications, technique, drills - etc.

The backhand shot is probably the hardest to execute in hockey, as it's incredibly unpredictable coming off the blade. That also makes it one of the most dangerous shots, goalies don't have much of a chance beside guessing on a well executed backhander.

If anyone is looking for a primer on hockey analytics, Scott McLaughlin posted an excellent piece on week.com. Well worth a read.

Putting this in here as the article links to a bunch of really good sites and gives a nice run down of their features too.  Like, I didn't notice the Compare button that you can use to get bubble charts for players on different teams on Extra Skater.

For a 40-plus-page thesis, I think he talks way too little about the role the curvature of the blade (or lack thereof) has in playing the puck effectively on the backhand. A right-tool-for-the-job kind of thing. Anywho, kudos to that kid for being able to turn it into a school project.
