That’s fair, and his comparison to Eddie Murphy bears that out a bit (although the Gooden one doesn’t sit with me as much; it undersells WH’s peak successes and subsequent still very successful, though not legendary, later career). I feel a better comp is someone like Griffey Jr.; all-world talent and an insane first decade followed by a disappointing (only by comparison) late career that ran into a couple of stumbling blocks, but was still “very good” by almost any other measure.
That's funny, because I almost said that she had a Eric Davis-esque career. But I am an Eric Davis Stan and he didn't reach quite that high for a long enough time.

Edit. Your Griffey example isn't too far off, but I think he had such a better-than-we-remember Cinci years and a longer peak earlier on?

At the very least... Isnt this why BS is the best? He has us comparing 80-90's pop icons to athletes.

But that’s what I’m saying: having multiple top 5 singles over a decade or so is still an *incredibly* successful achievement. That’s more chart success than other very successful artists (like Springsteen, for instance) have had in their entire career. I think you’re underselling her a bit.

Yeah I’m not trying to slam Simmons, just unraveling a small thread he left hanging. I have t though this much about Whitney Houston (or Eric Davis!) in 25 years.

I should mention Limp Bizket's Nookie episode is also podcasting genius. I don't think anything could ever top End of the Road, but he's got 20 more to win me over.

But Nookie is most certainly great and worth listening to ASAP.

Rob Harvilla's latest, BoyzIIMen's End of the Road was quite possibly the best podcast I have listened to this year. It's so ridiculously funny, it should be charged with a crime for breaking the comedy scale.

Every episode of this pod is better than the last. What an achievement. Rob is taking August off but will do the last 20 songs starting in September. And I can't wait. But it is a good time to catch up on the old episodes while he's off.
I listened to the 'End of the Road' episode a couple days ago while driving, and I laughed uproariously out loud at least a half-dozen times. Its a tour de force.

This series was good from the jump, but Harvilla really landed on the perfect tone a dozen or so episodes in, and it has been an absolute gem since then. I didn't think podcast could surpass The Rewatchables for me, but this one has.

I'm very sad we're 2/3 the way through.

It's namechecked in the episode, but if you enjoyed the Boyz II Men one I highly recommended the Netflix docuseries This Is Pop, specifically the first episode "The Boyz II Men Effect". I watched it with a friend that was unaware of the Boston through-line to B2M, and it was very enlightening to her (and really fun overall).

I've been meaning to check out that Netflix series. May try to get to it this weekend. Growing up in Mass. in the 80s I was really plugged in to the whole Maurice Star/New Edition/NKOTB lineage. Will be fun to revisit that.

For Rewatchables #200 it's supposed to be a 2007 film. That has to be Superbad with his buddy Hader right? Maybe it's No Country For Old Men or There Will be Blood?

I think they already did No Country. You're probably right, but I'll throw out American Gangster as a dark horse candidate. It's a gritty crime film (which they love), directed by a big name director (Ridley Scott), and it's got Denzel and Crowe, who are both Ringer faves.

Zodiac. My favorite movie from ‘07 and my favorite Fincher film. I think they’ve covered most of his films at this point—Social Network, Fight Club, Gone Girl, Se7en—so I am looking forward to them rewatching Zodiac.

Did they do There Will Be Blood?

Will Simmons talk about drinking ESPN's milkshake?
Honestly hard to see them do there will be blood for 200. Too artsy fartsy for BSG for a big episode. knocked up with appatow or someone? bourne ultimatum with damon? I'd lean that way.

No Three-Heat?! I’m disappointed. I was hoping they’d bring in a new third voice but keep the bit going

He also says it’s on Netflix so pretty sure it’s either There Will Be Blood or Superbad.
Looking through a list of 2007 movies on Netflix (which I assume is reliable), I think this is right. There's really nothing else. I do have to say that I want a Three-Heat more for No. 200.

I don’t know if this should go in the other Simmons thread or here but him opening up his podcast today calling Peacock “the cock” was a nice job by him.

Benjamin Solak joined the Ringer from the Draft Network. I really like his personality: data based and funny (and a UChicago product). He's been on the last 2 Ringer NFL shows, and seems to fit in pretty well.

As for the earlier Russillo/Simmons thing, I've been impressed with how seriously Russillo takes his podcasts. He does research on his interview subjects and his opening take. He does the reading. Simmons is almost known for his seat-of-the-pants firing away at this point.

Did anyone catch Woz last week mentioning that Simmons has two friends, one is a Trump supporter, and he was happy to be on with the other one (House)? Not hard to figure he was talking about Russillo, but I guess it doesn't come across in his podcasts (except for his very bad George Floyd take).

Woz was referencing Jack-O (John O’Connell), and it seemed good natured, but awkwardly delivered.

Fully agree on RR putting in the work. I may be more disappointed to lose his podcast than Bill’s, were one of them to suddenly discontinue.

Yeah, Woz was clearly talking about Jack-O. "Bill has two friends he has on all the time, one is a Trump supporter and the other is commie scum, and I'm happy to be here with the latter."

But if I recall, Jack-O was very vocal about not voting for Trump in '16 or '20, whereas I thought Russillo wouldn't address who he voted for? That said, it does feel way more like a reference to Jack-O given the "two friends" thing.

Yeah, Jack-O hates Trump, which I think was part of the understanding that Woz was clearly joking about it.

I like Woz and Simmons; they have good chemistry together and Woz has the right kind of energy/charisma to play off of Bill.

Right. I was clearly overthinking this. Not the first time I've been guilty of that...and totally agree on Woz & Bill together.

Russillo never said who he voted for, but Chris Long brought it up once on RR's podcast. He said something like there is no effing way RR would ever vote for Trump, and RR didn't respond to it. It was Long defending his friend, because he knew RR wasn't going to come out and say he didn't vote for Trump.

What was RR's George Floyd take? I don't think I remember that.

IIRC it was some cringe-worthy attempt by him and Simmons to address the situation and they basically "both sides'ed" the protests as if they were analyzing a draft decision. They got deserved crap for it and I think they both have acknowledged how tone deaf it was to try and have two rich white guys analyze a situation like that.

In my opinion, Russillo is probably an old-school fiscal conservative type guy that wants very little to do with the craziness from the past decade+. At one point he said that, in the past (pre-2016), he's made voting decisions based on his wallet and everything kind of feeds into that narrative.

I remembered it more as a voting for Trump/taxes discussion, but after a quick googling, it appears that I remembered that incorrectly. It was a discussion that included the George Floyd protests.

Flying Coach is a great podcast and provides some really interesting insights, but the coaches on it also come off so conceited.

Hearing Tomlin talk about his objective not being to get C players to play like B players but A players to play like A players so clearly outlines why his teams always had trouble against BB and the Pats.

These guys seem so focused on this is how we play and we are going to line up and beat you this way, it is no wonder that when that is taken away there plan B (or B and C players) are not able to execute and carry the team.

Not sure if this should go here, the Simmons thread, or in the Omar forum... but I finally watched the Woodstock '99 documentary on HBO Max, and thought it was really, really well done. Captured the musical and cultural scene of the late 90s quite well.

It sounds like they'll be bringing in Jason Goff to do a Chicago based show. He's a good dude who paid his dues and worked his way up to an afternoon drive show on 670, only to get fired to make way for shitbag Dan McNeill's third (and likely final) run at the station a few years back.

He now hosts the Bulls pre and post-game shows on TV, and now looks like he'll get a weekly pod on the Ringer. I'm glad things worked out for him, since he should have never been let go from 670.

I enjoyed his appearance on Simmon's pod. Hoping he'll pop up on other shows from time to time bc I probably won't tune in to a Chicago centric one.

I did hear something like that but didn’t put much stock in it. I am very unimpressed by Sharp as a podcaster, he might be good at gambling but he uses too many weasels words and doesn’t speak directly. Seems like he will be on more shows so I hope he gets better.
Sharp strikes me as a very knowledgeable guy who hasn't quite figured out how to do podcasting yet. He talks really fast and gives out a ton of information, but it's not in a particularly digestible format.
Sharp is truly insufferable. He's an auto skip whenever he's on a podcast. He does use too many words and he's so full of himself.
Taking these from the Bill Simmons thread.

Sharp sounds like he believes his stats are better than yours, like he's found the magic formula. I bought his book one year, it was a mess.

If I could place Sharp on a spectrum of self-proclaimed analysts, with the Cubic transformation guy on one side and Bill James/Tom Tango on the other, I think he'd be pretty far left, next to Eric Van.

This is a conundrum because his gambling podcast is going to feature Ben Solak (great), Chris Vernon (good), and Joe House (not as terrible as he used to be). Maybe I'll just skip his parts.

I've been listening to 'Gene and Roger', the story of Siskel and Ebert's rise to fame, an 8-part podcast from The Big Picture and host Brian Raftery. The first three have been excellent and I'm looking forward to hearing the rest. Thumbs up!
Finished it this weekend. Did I think a podcast about Siskel and Ebert would make me cry as I cleaned the hot tub? Yeah, probably.

I really enjoyed it quite a bit.

The Rewatchables is doing Warrior this week. I know there are a few fans of the movie here. It's Simmons and Russillo, so we'll see how it goes.
It was solid, not too spectacular. The “premiere” story Russillo told may have been too long for some, but I could’ve listened to a full unabridged version...as the National is my favorite band I’m glad they gave a shout out to how perfect the use of “About Today” was in the closing scene. That said, not mentioning “Start a War” in the opening seems like an oversight - the lyric ‘walk away now, and you’re gonna start a war’ seems like a pretty intentional choice given the brothers relationship.

I like The Rewatchables. It's morphed into my favorite podcast for driving to work. Not aa big fan of Dobbins, and I wish he'd kind of mix up the guest formula. Having testicles would not render Chris Ryan less capable of talking about Bridesmaids or While You Were Sleeping, and Mallory Rubin would be nice to hear from more. It would be nice to move away from the "These people think this movie is awesome" method of selection and include one out-of-synch person, or someone that isn't as familiar with the movie, just to get a fresh perspective.

It's crazy how many movies I assume MUST be a "Rewatchable" already but aren't. Like Mission Impossible and The Replacements. I saw those recently and thought "Ok, now I have to listen to the Rewatchables on this" but they haven't done them yet.

I'm pretty sure they did Mission Impossible early on before Simmons started driving most of the episodes.
