I like the NFL network pod better than Ringer. I think most of the Ringer football people have bad personalities for podcasting. This is not counting the great House from DC.
not fighting but what do you mean by a bad personality for podcasting? I liked Mays fwiw and find the current crew pretty terrible.

Most podcast I like are a mix of a good hang and informative. I don’t listen often to the Barstool pod ‘pardon my take’ because it is in some ways too silly (I listen if certain guests are on); Ringer NFL shows go the other way…the info is rarely good and the hosts are not entertaining. They don’t need to be doing stand up comedy but if they were in a group talking football at a party, I would not stand with this group. I’d rather listen to House talk about golf and I can probably only identify 5-10 golfers on appearance (meanwhile I love the NFL).

I thought Mays sucked too (All these people are ok when they are on with Simmons but without him I find them unlistenable).

Edit: also, no need to preface question with not fighting. I love a good fight about shitty podcast hosts. All in good fun.

Edit2: By fun, it’s partly that, I love the game of football, I want a little bit of the podcast to be a celebration of the game. This is what is so good about Simmons doing NBA, you know he loves this stuff and would be doing the same type of analysis if he was a mill worker and talking to people at lunch and in the bar, he LOVES the NBA and it draws the listener in because he cares so much.

Lombardi has this a little bit with his podcast. He is not a natural like Simmons but this guy loves football and you can tell and it makes for a pretty good pod.

I think we're looking for the same thing if not the same people--I want some content and thought but also want people who are kind of conversational and reasonably funny. I too find at least Clark and Sharp to be dull and not particularly informed about football. (I thought Mays was decent--he was reasonably funny and I loved his fixation on the o-line--but different strokes).

I like Mays' Athletic pods on Mondays during the season with Nate Tice, because they are all football, and no BS--not a lot of banter and no gambling, which I could care less about. I listen to Simmons and Sal and Simmons and House and get all the banter and gambling crap I'd ever want (and I want next to nothing about the latter). But Simmons, Sal, and House all know nothing more about football than I do (and actually quite a bit less), so I welcome listening to people who actually know something about went on the field when the season is in play. I don't need to listen to another pod of failed comedians who know very little about the sport as Simmons, Sal, and House have that corner covered for me.

For the record, they are very very very successful comedians. On the knowledge point, I like listening to Lombardi, Jeremiah, and whoever Russillo interviews

I agree with the successful part, but whether or not they're comedians (Sal excluded) is a matter of debate.

Russillo is a very good interviewer, but I can't listen to him with Simmons anymore because he lapses into asskissery at times, and that's off-putting. I enjoy Simmons more with people who will challenge him from time to time like Sal, Chris Ryan, Sean Fennessey, and Chuck Klosterman. I'd put Jacko in there as well, but I can't listen to him anymore because he's only really engaged when his team is riding high, and when that's the case, he's the last person I want to hear from.

Yeah, I feel like Russillo challenges Simmons. If anything, the dynamic I don't like is Simmons not challenging Russillo. I generally enjoy Russillo but I also think at times he can have takez that come across as incredibly condescending.

Actually, the best ongoing pushback he gets is from Van Lathan on Rewatchables. He WTF's Simmmons all the time.

The single best pushback Simmons has ever gotten was on a pod that didn't even involve him. On the Fennessey / Ryan Big Picture episode where Tarantino guested, Quentin tore into Simmons for some Rewatchables comments. It was amazing, and the best part was how much Fennessey and Ryan were enjoying it.

I almost exclusively listen to the life advice segment of Russillo's pod and I love Kyle. He's seems to be completely self aware and keeps his head down. His 27 yo smoker's laugh cracks me up every time.

If I had an empire, an in-law like Kyle is EXACTLY who I'd hook up.

You haven't listened in a while. There is none of that happening and it hasn't happened since the summer of 2020. Rusillo mocks Simmons, right to his face, and they are great together.

He is the only one, other than Sal, who doesn't really work for the Ringer.

You might be right about that as I can't recall the last pod I listened to that they did together, but I'm sure it was one of those NBA redrafts in which Russillo was totally deferential to Simmons. After that, I was out on their pods.
Rusillo's podcast is excellent. One of the best out there, in fact. He's worth listening to.

One of the reasons I love listening to Russillo/Simmons is for the moments when Russillo just completely mocks him or makes fun of some of his takes, like his constant "is this guy a top 20 player?" after a guy has 1 or 2 good games.

Half the time I feel like Simmons doesn't even notice. It's great.

I believe it was for Bill suggesting that William Peterson should be replaced in Manhunter. And another one for Thief. Tarantino wasn't having it. "Are you fucking kidding me? Did you not watch Crime Story you fucking asshole?" And you're right, Sean and Chris were LOVING it.

He had a great one today. Simmons was talking about how it was nice that a podcast with two ESPN people didn't just talk about ESPN and how they've moved forward. Russillo comes in with "Well it's probably because you sold your company for a lot of money. I probably look back a little more than you do." In a very collegial manner but slayed me (and Simmons).

I also like when he mocks Bill assigning an arbitrary percentage to players when fighting through an injury.

(Paraphrasing), "So Bill, CJ McCollum is playing through a mild ankle sprain, would you say he's at...60, 65 percent? 70 maybe?"

I love when Simmons assigns a PRECISE arbitrary percentage on these things. He had Giannis at 82% (or something close) after game 2 of the finals.

Was this before or after he mused that before this Finals he thought that Giannis was missing a chromosome? (Which KOC very quickly and smartly completely distanced himself from).

And I agree that Russillo challenges Simmons more than anyone (save Klosterman) that’s on regularly….but that’s such an incredibly low bar he shouldn’t get that much credit for it

Are we sure Giannis is a top 11 "i got this" guy. He does the herky jerky thing but I'm not sure he's a guy you trust in the final minutes 78% of the time. Bird on the 86 Celtics was a full chromosome guy. Here's my top 7 chromosome guys.

This was a rare genuine LOL for me. I have been enjoying Jackie Mac's appearances, but expected she would be doing a bit more for The Ringer after the fanfare around her hiring. That "narrative podcast" never really happened, did it?

She mentioned that she's working on something that but it isn't ready to be announced. Wasn't clear if it was for the Ringer or elsewhere but it's something.

I am definitely a Simmons apologist but it's time for Billy Big Bucks to step aside from The Rewatchables. He's so bad on them now and if he's only with 1 other person, it's just not as good as it should be.

They just did Fight Club and it was terrible. Chris Ryan could only do so much. Matt Damon as Tyler Durden? Matt Damon instead of Norton? What are we doing Simmons? And while talking about a movie that mocked the shameless corporate advertising machine while shamelessly and repeatedly plugging Woodstock 99 was the height of cringe comedy.

Did Fight Club create the anti hero? No, Bill. It did not. What a miss. How do you do Fight Club and not have a guy like Fennessy on it? Or Ryen? Fuck, bring Shoemaker in. He gets it.

I was really excited for this one, because I glanced at the title and somehow thought it was Ryan and Fennessey, and there's a lot to unpack about whether that movie is successful as a satire or if it caused the sort of nihilism that it was supposedly trying to lampoon (which is main point of Ebert's review that Simmons entirely skipped over).

Really deflated when I realized it was Simmons and Ryan. It was actually better than I was expecting, but Simmons still had way too much of a meathead fratboy take on it.

Yeah, CR and Billy Big Bucks (which I love) should really just stick to doing two-man pods like the Re-Re-Heat or Den of Thieves. Them doing fucking Fight Club without a third wheel is criminal. As good as CR is, he can't carry Simmons on this sort of movie.

Also, how often does Simmons actually like a woman in a movie? 10% of the time? Less?

Simultaneously arguing that the movie was overlooked by the Oscars because it wasn't appreciated by critics at the time but also that if a stronger actress were cast they would have easily been nominated* is fucking insane, even for him.

(*in a pretty stacked Supporting Actress year, no less)

The worst example of this was when he wanted a bigger actress cast than Jodhi May in the Alice Monroe (the younger sister) role in The Last of the Mohicans. The actress is on screen for maybe five to seven minutes and has maybe four lines, if that. Meryl Streep is not flying to North Carolina in the summer to do that!

With many of his suggestions, Bill acts like movies have unlimited budgets, and great actors sit by their phones waiting to jet off anywhere to add star power to a movie by playing a role that has lines on a page or two of the script.

I was Jack's bored podcast listerning.

Anyhow, there's also Bill's accidental solpsism . If he first observed something watching a film then it must have been the first time that that happened--leading to gems like Fight Club being the first anti hero movie or the first movie that criticized American commercialism or that it featured birth of the unreliable narrator. What absolute codswallop. I'm not even saying watch new wave films, just be aware that there are a lot of great movies that aren't on TNT (or were on TNT/TBS but were made before 1975 so he didn't watch).

And while I'm sure Reese would have been great and an interesting choice, Bonham-Carter is absolutely perfect in that role.

Continuing to rant a little but one thing he doesn't seem to realize is that movie stars bring every role you've ever seen them in and every ET interview they've ever done to every role, so casing superstars in everything can really throw you out of a film. Call it the "WTF is Austin Powers doing in Inglorious Basterds" effect.

After reading this fun and thoughtful comparison of Ted Lasso to "nice-guy" coaches of yore like Sparky Anderson and Joe Gibbs by Elizabeth Nelson, an awesome freelancer who writes most often about golf and music (and fronts a punk band named after a great work of political writing, The Paranoid Style), among other things, I was struck by how impressive the roster of women who write and pod for The Ringer is. Katie Baker, Mallory Rubin, Nora Princiotti, Alison Herman, Seerat Sohi, Mirin Fader, Claire McNear, and Megan Schuster are just the first few extremely talented names that come to mind, and I am sure I am leaving out someone else great.

Don't forget the Tea Time girls, Kate Halliwell, Amelia Wedermeyer, and Liz Kelly.

That said, I am not a fan of Herman. But I think Baker is great, Mallory Rubin is an all time talent who is funny and as smart as they come, and Nora Princiotti turned the NFL podcast from a must delete to a must listen. She had a monster 2020.

I too was very disappointed by the Fight Club episode. Re-cast Marla? Helena Bonham Carter was perfect. I can’t even imagine anyone else bringing the same kind of manic energy to the role.

Rewatchables should always be a three-person show, especially with Simmons at the helm. The best eps are the ones where he's totally out of his depth and the other hosts make fun of him for it. Bill's has a remarkable persona in which he's totally incurious but also believes himself to be a domain expert, so he spouts nonsense with very little self-awareness. Some of the funniest moments to me are when he says something really dumb - example, wanting a 20-year-old, sparkling clean Reese Witherspoon to play chainsmoking, strung out Marla Springer - and you can tell it's very sincere, but then the other hosts call him out on it so it transparently walks it back to make it seem insincere. CR does that to a degree, but there needs to be a second person to collect the lava flow of bullshit from Simmons' mouth because it's impossible for one person to do it alone.

There really should never be two person Rewatchables, especially considering how deep their bench is. Mallory Rubin or Van Lathan couldn't add something to this conversation? Or Memento?

That's exactly the point of it and it's more enjoyable (to me at least) when more than two people are throwing shit at the wall. I'm not saying Bill is bad on the podcast - quite the contrary. He's the foil. He's essential. But his presence is better complemented when there are multiple hosts that contrast him as opposed to one.

I don’t agree that Bill is the foil (generally) or not a curious person. I think fight club is way out of his wheelhouse so a 3rd would have been good. This is a dark movie and dark in a way that probably doesn’t make sense to a guy that everything has gone right for. Everything Billy Big Bucks touches turns to gold so not a great match.

Bill was awful in that without Fennessey there to challenge him.

Someone posted this in the FB group on response to the awful Reese Witherspoon take:

"If they ever decide to do an episode on Aliens, 10 to 1 that Simmons says they should have found a better actress to play Ripley.
Any takers?"

I think there was a worse one because it was equally as bad but for a bigger role.
Ol Billy Big Bucks is consistently out there on his re-casting suggestions. It's been noted above, but my favorite little game with the Rewatchables is guessing (1) whether and (2) who he'll try to re-cast with Pfeiffer. I get 1 right a lot, but I'm not quite as accurate on 2.

Fake edit: As I typed this, I seem to remember that he suggested recasting Jodie Foster with her in the Silence of the Lambs. Is that right? Because if so that is galactically crazy.

He doesn’t like Foster in that movie so I think you’re right; he also wanted to throw Will Smith in something and I can’t remember what it was right now.
