My jaw literally dropped when I saw those rankings earlier. I assumed the Lakers had traded for Killian Hayes.
I know I'm nba stupid. Like i follow it but im not like a HRB or other technical geniuses on the board. So i know i have a huge void/lack of knowledge. But KOC's takes consistently have me scratching my head. I hear him and he is presented as one of the "smart" guys but i just don't get it.

KOC is a really smart guy but sometimes his enthusiasm for certain types of players can lead to him getting carried away with someone's potential. He needs Verno to browbeat him sometimes to keep him in check.

The latest Big Picture is a 1993 movie draft with Sean, CR, Dobbins, Rob Mahoney, and Van Lathan. Van is typically great, and Mahoney's first pick nearly causes a murder. 1993 is also a loaded year of movies, so it's a fun listen.

I think the credit to KOC is that when he makes a mistake, he owns up to it and tries to figure out where he can improve. Killian Hayes is a great example. He's had like 20 minute long discussions on the draft podcast about what he learned from that evaluation and how that effects future evals.

He's right about some stuff and wrong about other stuff, which is just the nature of being a commentator. Much prefer the humility he brings to the role over what some other folks bring to the table.

Not as much as CR's later pick.

I especially enjoyed Mahoney picking Van's pocket later on.

As a huge golf dork, it is awesome to see CR on this week's No Laying Up mega-pod about the Full Swing Netflix show, plus recent No Laying Up hire Kevin Van Valkenburg on The Press Box with Bryan Curtis was a very fun listen.

Adam Nayman is one of my favorite Ringer contributors. He’s a true cineaste who is appointment listening when he appears on The Big Picture podcast, and his Ringer articles are always good.

Yeah, I enjoy him as much as I can probably enjoy a contemporary film critic. I think he does a great job in this video identifying why the Oscars got it wrong. Instead of just saying "this thing that was better than the winner was robbed" like most of these pieces, he identifies certain cultural trends that some of the overlooked movies/performances were ahead on (and the Oscars were late on recognizing). I don't think Faye Dunaway winning Best Actress in Network over Sissy Spacek in Carrie would be considered that big of a historical miss, but Nayman makes a compelling argument for why Spacek's performance should have been recognized.

I thought it was a solid start, but mostly agree with your one-man podcast opinion. I did like the tone of the podcast in terms of mixing stats with his argument. There's so many Boston sports media personalities to choose from, so hopefully he grabs solid guests for the four teams to rotate through after his monologues. It will also be nice if he keeps the Sox and Bruins in the discussion since those teams are somewhat neglected on the Ringer relative to the Celtics and Patriots. I'll be tuning in for the foreseeable future.
What are folks‘ thoughts on Off the Pike 6+ months in? I tune in intermittently and find it to be pretty enjoyable whenever I do (scratches the sports talk radio itch without all the idiocy / general awfulness) but always wish it was just a little more engaging.

I think you summed it up well and I'm similarly an intermittent listener. He researches well and isn't afraid to stake out interesting opinions - kinda Russillo lite in that regard. However, you're right that he's still missing something to make the show more engaging. I have no idea what it is, but my opinion remains that it needs to be something other than a mailbag/whiner line.

Not a must listen for me, but it definitely fills a void when I am want to hear someone talk about a big win by the Celtics, Sox or Pats (theoretically for the last 2). Handy that the show description tells me when I can safely skip talk about Mac Jones trade rumors. I expect I will enjoy listening to the Bruins segments when I start to pay attention to the playoffs.

What a re-entry point for the pod, this is going to ruin my productivity today.

RE: the companion book, Rob's narrative style from the podcast matches what I remember from his stints at Deadspin, so it should be an awesome read.

Never listened to that, seems like a cool idea for a pod. Good?
It's fantastic. 1. Start from the beginning. 2. Even songs you don't think you care about make for fantastic episodes, maybe some of the best.

Edit: The reason for #1 is that the episodes were shorter as he found his voice. Once you've heard a bunch of the 45-50 minute episodes, I think you'll not only enjoy the 90+ minute ones, but you'll actually be glad that they're not so condensed.

This is all awesome, perfect advice across the board. Especially the point about listening to episodes about songs you don't care about or know.

I have gotten 3 friends into this podcast and am constantly getting texts like, "Holy shit, I never lived until I started listening to this podcast." Constantly! It is one of the best podcasts ever.

She is such a mess. I was not in the right headspace to listen to the whole thing.
She's Courtney. I loved listening to her on this episode. She's a LOT, sure - but I think she's smart as a whip. I also wouldn't be surprised if she has BPD, diagnosed or otherwise. That said, I'm very clearly not a psychiatrist, so whatever.

I 100% had my Wesley Willis phase at 19.

And then again at 23
And maybe at 45.
Right there with you. I love Harvilla's continued usage of two seemingly unconnected things to open episodes - Warrant/Beastie Boys, Con Air/Dixie Chicks... Just fantastic stuff.

The Courtney Love interview was absolutely amazing. She’s brilliant.

Some of those discarded lyrics for Smells Like Teen Spirit… ooof. Kurt clearly knew he needed extensive rewrites!

The latest drop of The Town podcast is a good listen if you’re at all interested in the shifting state of live sports providers for TV and streaming, in the impending death of RSBNs, and why there’s a crazy Balkanization right now in terms of receiving your sports

Speaking of which, here’s an example:

View: https://twitter.com/riveraveblues/status/1660291354314911749?s=46&t=zM3dSfjXpvuG4SCzKz09xg
Matt always does a very good job discussing sports issues. That’s rare for a “Hollywood” reporter.

Also, that Yankees TV schedule is one of the reasons that sports fan avidity is waning across all demographics. It’s just wayyy too much work to watch games these days. And way too expensive as well.

One ringer trend that I’ve heard a lot of lately is them making fun of ESPN for only doing hot takes. Which is usually preceded and followed by a hot take

The DeNiro draft episode of the Big Picture is unbelievable. All time Chris Ryan performance and the other 2 are just about as unhinged. CR finally snapping and his response to Sean’s Rene Russo proposal are the hardest I’ve laughed in a long while

It was great hearing more details about the Casino Rewatchables recording mishaps.

I am not done yet, needed to take a break for less mentally taxing fare. I was listening on my commute and found myself wanting to stop to Google 8 times a minute. Just chock full of unexplained, tossed-off references to 40 years of pop culture, politics, and history. I really think an annotated transcript of the interview with Courtney would be an incredible 300 page article.

So.... I get there's a minor conflict of interest, but there's been absolutely zero about PRIMO on the site? Even after Shea co-created it and netw3rk was in the writers room?

Just seems a little weird?

What's the conflict?

Start a thread if you're interested in the show. And what is weird about it? There are approximately 850 TV shows released every year. Maybe 40 of them get threads.

Oh, it's a Latino show. You're saying SoSH is racist because there isn't a thread about the show. Got it, Cool.

Note, I love Shea and have watched Primo and it was excellent. But also simple and cute. Not much more to say about it but I do hope it gets a 2nd season. The Uncles were just amazing.

The site means “the ringer” not SoSH. His comment is about them not mentioning Shea’s show. Conflict between streaming services ? I don’t know what that conflict is but that is how I read it.

I don't know what kind of coverage The Ringer could really give Primo. It's not really a show that would make waves in The Watch, and that's the only place I'd expect it.

You'd think they would give Shea and Jason maybe even a passing mention?
Yeah, it is surprising that it hasn’t come up on The Watch (although it is true that they rarely discuss sitcoms). They’ve certainly had no issues discussing other Amazon shows, so that can’t be it. Jason’s departure from the Ringer was pretty acrimonious, but I doubt that Chris or Andy have any issues with him.
