I haven’t listened to the entire sit down with Yasi to the end yet, any hint about what’s coming next beyond “my producers say wait, but it’s coming”?
This was basically Rob's We Are The World, except he's doing all the parts.

Also I can't prove it because I deleted my account, but my last tweet- several years back- was telling Rob that yes, we do really need a Morphine episode. I walked home from Union Sq to Charlestown last night, after a few drinks and an edible, and I was basically teary eyed fistpumping for a good bit of the episode.

I was really happy to hear him finally get to Morphine in this episode - specifically the beautiful "In Spite of Me."

I was disappointed with the last episode because I (looks at shoes) really love the song "Closing Time". Also went to school with Dan Wilson and later on worked with plenty of people that worked with him in his current super-producer role, and he is unanimously characterized as a kind, generous, and friendly guy.

The Rob segment talked much less about "Closing Time" the song than the norm for a "60 Songs" episode, and barely talked about Dan or the members of the band or their origin story and where-are-they-now of it all at all. That was a bummer, but I get it -- the finale was Rob's valedictory and all the references to hearing "goodbye" in songs was undeniably amusing. [No mention of Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Kind of Life" in the canon of songs with "Goodbye" seemed like a miss to me though...]

But what really bummed me was the interview segment. Sure, Yasi is smart and funny and knowledgable. But the two of them actually dumped on the song and being generic and unremarkable and built on a metaphor they brushed off as "whatever". Again, didn't mention the individual bandmembers or songwriters at all. Yasi was outright dismissive of "Closing Time", and Rob gave in to it without much of a struggle. Made me feel like the uncool kid hanging out with people who'd really rather be vibing on Morphine or whatever.

Interesting perspective, because I thought Rob's section did give Closing Time its due at least as much as any other song that he did that did not come from a band that has had a lasting cultural impact. I now know 1000% more about Semisonic, Dan Wilson, and the dual meaning of that song than I did before having listened to that episode, and I am someone who likes that song, too. Agree that Yasi was more dismissive and Rob was not particularly interested in talking more about Semisonic with her, but that was fine, too, considering he was also trying to wrap up the entire project. I could certainly feel differently if I had a personal connection to Wilson like you do.

If you really love this song, you should read, "So You Wanna be a Rock n Roll Star?" by Jacob Slichter. It's all about the band, that song, what happened before and what happened after. It's absolutely fantastic and was one of my favorite books of two years ago. Highly recommended.

Yasi Salek is the absolute fucking worst. Unlistenable.

Maura Johnston is RIGHT THERE. But I think she was only interviewed on one episode. Yasi got, like, 34.
Come on, Yasi is a the coolest chick in the history of women. Just ask her.

Holy cow is she someone tough to listen to. It's really off putting and exhausting. Having her on the last episode was a genuine drag.

Thanks for the recommendation! Jacob also was a classmate (like Dan, very well-liked and respected though I knew him only slightly), and I can't believe I missed this. Headed to Amazon.

Yeah I turned off the last episode when the first half ended. I figured the segment with Yasi would be the 60 Songs equivalent of Dani burning the city on the back of her dragon.
