This is...ahhh...not good. Apparently Erik Karlsson and his wife Melinda have filed for an order of protection against Mike Hoffman’s girlfriend for a repeated and lengthy harassment campaign.

Wow, I mean, wow. I suspect they have some basis for believing it is her, and I suspect it's not just an assumption on their part. Given how long this has been going on, and the fact there a criminal investigation suggests they may have actionable data is it her.

Hoffman probably wants to think long and hard about putting a ring on that thing.

If true, what a garbage piece of shit she is. If not her, then they should track the troll down and hang them by their toenails. Just awful shit.

Hoffman has responded denying everything "150%", and pledging to cooperate with authorities. Whomever is responsible for the trolling is an awful, soulless person, and I hope the investigation brings whomever it is to light so they can face punishment.

A handful of tweets from other players' wives look pretty bad for Hoffman's girlfriend. It seems like this wasn't a secret.

It also sounds like the Sens have known about this for a while. What a mess of an organization.

I doubt it happens, but if this keeps up, I wonder if the NHL entertains forcing Melnyk out. He hasn’t exactly been a net positive in general.

I'm not arguing that Hoffman's girlfriend couldn't possibly have done this or anything, but the story right now is that there are some anonymous Instagram posts and a bunch of WAGs think it was her. I don't understand how people are so sure it's her with that little to go on. I assume random lunatics harass famous people on the internet constantly, but this is strange enough that I'm having a tough time just taking someone's word for it.

It isn't just one person's word though. It is several people claiming this happened. And why would someone who is obviously going through so much pain go to these lengths and get an order of protection? Don't you think that they may be privy to a little more evidence than we are?

It looks bad and warrants an investigation. I think that criminal detectives in cyber bullying investigation (or the Canadian equivalent) will look at the evidence and (if appropriate) Hoffman's girlfriend/fiancee, and they will be able to make far more informed and intelligent conclusions than I could based on the evidence and their expertise. My conclusions will be heavily influenced by the outcome of the investigation, but at that time, and not before.

Hoffman & GF respond:

http://ottawacitizen.com/sports/hockey/nhl/senators-extra/exclusive-hoffman-fiancee-deny-harassing-the-karlssons?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1529089090

They vehemently deny the allegations. The GF claims she had no idea until she got an email from Daniel Winnik’s wife 2 days after the IG posts accusing her of the posts. Hoffman says he tried to clear the air with Karlsson, initially got no response, then they had a chat later on after practice one day but Karlsson wouldn’t listen to him.

Giving the higher draft pick is just hilarious there... no surprise that Ottawa saves $3m in real money over the next two years above and beyond the cap hit difference .

Great get by SJ, assuming Caryk doesn't start cyberbullying Mrs. Thornton

If you're going to exploit the market inefficiency for players with major character issues, you might as well go all in. Sign Voynov and Neal too.

Unrelated to the trade, The Sens draft pick decision this week is pretty fascinating. They owe Colorado their 1st either this year (4th overall) or in 2019 from the Duchene trade. They have up until they are on the clock to make their decision on whether to send this years pick over to Colorado. They know it is 4th this year, in what seems like a pretty good top of the draft. I don’t know too much about the 2019 draft other than at this point it is being called the “Jack Hughes” draft. Hughes is apparently a prospect in the class of Matthews or Eichel. Obviously to land the top pick next year they need to both suck and get lucky in the lottery. Sucking seems like a sure bet- they were terrible this year, just traded their 2nd best forward for nothing and they will likely trade the best defenseman in the world for futures. They could very easily be the worst team in the league next year and get the best lottery odds. But best lottery odds is still pretty low.

It is a tough call. 2-4 next year could be worse than 4 this year. Who knows. I think they should probably just suck it up and toss Colorado this years pick and be done with it. They do have an extra first this year (22). Move on and don’t let that cloud hang over you all next season.

Holy shit, Sharks flipped Hoffman to Florida for a much better package. Apparently Ottawa would not consider trading him in the division.

edit: apparently Ottawa did talk to Florida last week but was asking for a lot more. They just valued the back end of a frontloaded contract so much because they want to pay under the cap floor. That's just as fucked up but for completely different reasons

Don’t know if this belongs here or the Sens thread, but SJ flips Hoffman and a 18 7th to FLA for 2019 2nd, 2018 4th and 5th.

So I think in short here Wilson unloaded Boedker’s salary, a fringe prospect, a 6th and a 7th for a 2nd, 4th and 5th.

So SJS creates a 2nd and 4th rounder, and gets $4m in cap relief, because Ottawa didn't want to trade Hoffman in the division. Even though they're selling.

This is astonishing

You beat me to the news, but this is how bad teams kill themselves. What the fuck do they care if he’s in division? Is Florida being better a roadblock in their path to the Cup next season? Now, he’s in the division AND they gave him up for peanuts.

Cap floor related, it appears. Ottawa wanted a cap hit back. They never discussed the picks package that Florida sent to SJS.

The Sens couldn’t find a cap casualty Florida was willing to jettison onto them plus the picks? For a rebuilding team to actually downgrade a pick in a trade is mind-boggling.

Wow, the way Ottawa is going they might be out of the league in a few years and moving to Seattle or Hamilton or Quebec City or something. What a disaster.

Boedker has a $4 million cap hit and is owed $3 million in actual cash. Hoffman was owed $5.65 million in actual cash, so the Sens cleared $2.65 million or so. Looking at the Florida roster, I don’t see a player that makes sense for either team in this type of trade. Florida doesn’t have an appealing bad contracts. Then Sens have prioritized shedding money over collecting tangible assets.

For those on mobile, it's a tweet from @6thSense posted 6/19/18 @ 3:33pm that says: "According to @CraigCustance's source, Dorion was instructed not to make a move within his own division. Hoffman winds up there anyways. Good lord."

Craig Anderson was terrible last year and he's the 3rd oldest starting goalie in the league. I they could trade him and a late draft pick for nothing I would be ecstatic. It was incredibly idiotic to sign a 36 year old player to an expensive 2 year contract a full year before it ran out, too.
