The wheels have been off Tiger for some time. What we are seeing here is an engine seizing up.

This is a course Tiger should demolish and he's going to struggle to shoot 80 or worse. I don't know if he'll ever be a serious competitor again.

Aye the early starts definitely got the best of the weather.  Just watching Stenson playing his chip to the first green, the balls carrying much farther in the breeze. Nice to see Paul Lawrie doing well. He's pretty good at links golf.

I can't believe these scores. There might be 20 guys who finish at -4 or better.
It's not a terribly difficult course if the wind isn't bad, right? I've read if it was a wind-still weekend we'd probably see several guys at -15.

Thankfully it looks to be a damn-near gale tomorrow. :)

Yeah people have to remember that they play golf 12 months of the year, but the Open in Summer. So for about 9 months in the year its pretty dreech and windy and the course plays much different.

A question:   The wife calls me today and says she'd like to go see the Open for an anniversary trip in 2016 (Troon) or 2017 (Birkdale), or maybe Carnoustie for 2018.    We'd want to work in other aspects of trip besides Open viewing - play golf, see the cities, distilleries, etc.   Any thoughts on which one would be a better choice?   Preliminary stages of planning, obviously.

Im not sure if this is true depending on what platform you are watching the open on, but i am watching on a laptop through the live xfinity tv option i have through my provider. Anyways....i am loving all of the This is Sportscenter (newer and older) commercials during the breaks. again not sure if they are showing them on tv but they should be if they are not because they are still hilarious.

Sponsors? All he really has left is Nike (they reupped two years ago, so you assume they've got plenty left and even then, they likely will resign him even if for less money); Rolex, NetJets, Upper Deck and then some smaller ones (a couple pharm companies and he just signed for a motorcycle company. All his big ones (AT&T, Buick, EA, Gatorade, AmEx, Gilette, etc dumped him after that fateful Thanksgiving car accident.

For what it's worth, that motorcycle company is paying him the same amount that Buick was paying him.

Tough choice. Troon is on the west coast not far from Glasgow and you can visit the Loch Lomond and the Islands in the Firth of Clyde Arran; Skye; Rothsay and further North the Outer Hebredies. Birkdale is Liverpool area, also west coast, you can visit Manchester but not much joy Whisky wise. If Carnoustie was next year, that would be my choice cos it's East Coast and the East Coast gets better weather, less rain, more sun, and for golf you're never more than a mile or two from a golf course, not far from Glen Eagles, St Andrews, which is in the East Neuk of Fife and the old fishing villages, like Pittenweem and Ansthruther. Also from Carnoustie it's not far to Perth, Pitlochrie, anywhere up the A9 which cuts through Scotland North and South and takes you all the way to Inverness. Or you can head North up the coast to Montrose; Arbroath for the Smokies.

But i'd go sooner than later so here's some links relating to West Coast stuff. There's some great courses on the west of Scotland. Turnberry, Troon, Lochlomond. And to be honest, when we say better weather in scotland its relative we mean, not as shite. This summer's been fine on the West Coast, fairly dry.

You're right, I didn't realize it was that big (even discounting inflation). Also, in fairness, Buick dropped him before the incident due to the bailout. The big loss for him was EA. it was worth $771M to him over their 15 year relationship!

It did seem like ESPN kind of pulled the plug on him.   Sure they showed him more than they normally would show some back of the pack duffer, but they didn't show every shot, and went holes at a time without showing a single shot.

I think Fox showed almost every shot he took, especially on day 1 (and really as long as he was there),   but of course that had a lot of blooper reel fun to it,  so that made the time well spent

I wonder what Tiger's round would've looked like if he had had a late tee time, when the weather was worse.

Cold, raining and super windy in the AM tomorrow, clearing in the afternoon but will still be windy. So the guys who got the weather shaft today get it again tomorrow.

Play suspended after 20ml of rain. But they reckon maybe in 50 minutes. It's fair dreech oot there.

Edit: Yes they are due to start at 10am. Play the ball as it lies, and casual water relief.

It's beautiful now...winds still an issue.  But the sun is peeking through, at least for a few minutes. Makes me want to be there, with a beer in hand, instead of here with my coffee.

Crazy situationin the fairway. Duffner and Angel-Jiminez had balls the were probably an inch apart in the fairway and then Daly's ball rolled up and hit one of them. They are trying to figure out where the balls need to go and the order of play. Looks like they moved the wrong ball back, so I'm not sure what's going on. Bunch of people on the radio trying to figure it out.

They finally got it right. MAJ took a drop back where they thought his was, but found out his ball was never hit, so he got to move it back to the original spot. They finally dropped Duffner's ball to the right spot. Daly, not patient, went ahead and played while they were figuring it out and when the rules official tried to stop him he said, "why, my balls in play no matter what", and the guy agreed and let him hit. I don't think I've seen three tee shots that close in the fairway before.

Wind starting to pick up a tad, but it's been mostly calm conditions since they resumed play. Birdies available on the front.

Forecast for later in the afternoon is 20mph winds but gusting to 30-35mph.  I hope so cos this evens it out and it looked like the course was playing about 4 strokes longer for yesterday's late starters.

Yeah, I think Scott is toast after this year, but he did win The Players with the short putter years ago.

The wind is starting to really pick up.

ESPN, in prep for Tom Watson's last Open round, decides the '09 Open Highlights are the best ones to run to commemorate him. What? Not the 5 he won? Really?

Here is the link to the leaderboard with the projected cut line. I'm posting mainly to see how it moves through the day. Currently 70 golfers at -1 or better making cut. But with the wind this afternoon, I'm wondering how far it moves.

I can't imagine it goes much lower than E.

24 guys in the club house at E or better and 11 guys more than halfway through their second round at -3 or better.

Maybe it moves to +1, but I have had even in my head all morning as the projected line.

Probably worse considering he's been playing with a long putter for years. Rephrased: if he were putting with a short putter all these years and they forced him to switch to a long one I bet he would be worse too.

It's now E, with 86 golfers. The cutoff ranking is T68, so its closer to -1 than E. You're probably right, won't likely get to +1.

Scott's career was in shambles 6-7 years ago because of the short putter. It's hard to think he's going to come close to his success of the past 4 years when he goes back to the short putter.

Thanks for the info, Fletcherpost.   Greatly appreciated.  I hope we can pull off the trip.

Love I get to watch the Open at work (solo, no employees).   It's better than being home!

My mother's from Ayr, just south of Troon. I still have lots of family in Ayr and neighboring Prestwick, I've visited many times. If you end up going there, let me know, I can give you plenty of tips, I love the area.

He does? Are you sure you aren't projecting here? He seems like a very nice guy in everything I've ever seen or heard from him or about him.

DJ...the freaking length is huge on this course. He's playing a par 70 and if you count some of the par 4's he drives, par for him might be 68-69.
