But even that don banks article is calling Brady out as definitively having cheated and giving credence to how awful Spygate was. Even the white knights have little pitch forks.

Why argue appropriate penalties? NFL might as well banished Brady to a pineapple under the sea. They're making this bleep up. Zero standards

NFL seems blind that random/haphazard process on warnings, penalties is a greater game integrity concern than the things they're punishing.

Cross off Boomer Esiason, who continues the two-face act. When he's on Boston outlets, he's all gushy about the Pats. On his regular gig on Boomer & Carton, he's spewing the same old misinformed BS (i.e., integrity of the game, Brady had to be the mastermind, etc. etc.)

Fuck off next time he comes on The Hub or the WEEI and tries to appeal to the NE base.

Jim Gray is on the warpath vs. the Comish on Fox right now. "Ridiculous standard" to require turning over cell phones for all transgressions, great and small, and citing inept record of disciplinary decisions and lack of perspective.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.  I used to listen to Czabe and Andy Pollin's show locally here in DC.  I couldn't handle it after "Spygate".  Czabe was one of the biggest Patriot haters/Belicheat voices out there.   It stuns me to hear that Czabe is killing anyone other than the Pats.  I am wondering of working with ex-NFLer Chris Cooley has made him reevaluate his stance.  I doubt I'll listen to him again, as sports radio is a habit I am glad to have kicked, but I am tempted to listen.

Agree about Czabe's transformation. It's total. He is a bright guy adept at distilling complicated matters into 5-minute forceful segments.

I've listened to his morning show for a few years now -- partly for this reason, but also because he is willing to directly take on the likes of ESPN and Goodell - which surprises me since he works for an ESPN affiliate in the afternoons. I think he can also do "non-sports" talk in a light, amusing way that works in the morning, without letting the turn into a chuckle-fest (which I find with Toucher and Rich). Though admittedly, he goes down the chauvinistic, mongoloid route sometimes and that can be awful.

Anyway, I digress....He has been a Belichick hater previously, but he's been consistent in his hate of Goodell for years.

San Francisco KNBR. I've had sports talk radio on a few times in the car, catching bits and pieces and they're all saying yes, Brady broke a rule (probably) but the NFL went completely overboard. Even sounding like here, that the NFL is like a gestapo organization now. Of course, Brady is from San Mateo, about 20 miles down the peninsula from San Francisco.

Don't know if the link is posted correctly (been having issues with this), but it's a good one - he even points out that spygate was "an overblown misdemeanor."

Stuff like like this and the excellent Jenkins takedown is great, but I'm not sure how much it really matters. The mouth-breathing masses have long since embraced the cheaters theme, and aren't going to change their views no matter how effectively the whole thing is shown to be the steaming pile that it is.

It's true that the masses have already decided.  I have had at least 15 interactions with people who have told me that Brady was cheating and then immediately admitted to not having read the report or understood much other than a few bullet points.

That said, collecting the names of sensible, thoughtful writers, athletes and former athletes has an independent value.  It's nice to see who the unbiased, independent thinkers are.  I mean, yeah, I expect guys like Bruschi and Wilfork to support Tom, not  that I take it for granted.  It's more interesting when the Brett Favres of the world get on board.

Incidentally, could Peyton Manning be more of a weeny little shit?  His "I'm Tom's friend but I have no idea what happened" crap was lamer than lame.  If you're going to say nothing, then just say nothing.  Dickhead.

"The league’s past indifference to ball tampering, the bungling of the matter by NFL referees, and the Wells Report’s reverse-engineering a guilty verdict based on an assumption of skullduggery all indicate that Tom Brady stands a better chance of starting 16 games this season than he does of starting 12."

It's going to matter and here's why. If you happen to watch the crap ESPN and filler network shows that have all the ex-players, part time sports writers, hot women, etc. commenting and arguing about topics daily, one thing is clear, that group of assholes is wholly unoriginal. They get their info and opinions from people in the industry with a brain that actually use it to form an opinion. So what is happening, is people like Sally Jenkins write an article like this, then hacks that are going to be on TV today read it and steal her opinion, mainly because they are lazy and don't have the talent to do what she does. So the more Sally Jenkins pieces we see, the more the idiot voice will begin to turn on the NFL.

I hope that the gratuitous shot at liberal Washington politics (and not so indirectly, Obama) wont prevent people from absorbing Dobbs' succinct and well stated presentation.

I wish that Dobbs had mentioned how out of whack the penalty is here with the fact that nothing was done about the Vikings-Panthers game (other than "knock it off"), other recent penalties and the Rodgers' admission, but so be it.

This is a phenomenal editorial piece. It uses facts, and raises way way more disturbing imagery than that of super dark forces under inflating balls and hiding it at all costs.
I relish the thought of more of these stories popping up as time marches.  It turns out to be an even better story when one starts to consider the actual events- which were a coalition of incompetents out to "get" the overachievers once and for all, only to botch it so badly that the cover up can't even pass a smell test from 200 years away. Bring it on!!!

As an FYI:  Bruce Murray & Rich Gannon have been pushing a ‘What’s done is done.  Punishment has been levied.  Best for everyone to accept and move along.’ line this morning--and citing ‘Hall of Fame GM’ Bill Polian for his clarity on the matter.  None of these guys make ‘the list,’ but it is interesting to see where individuals are lining up as the PR battle plays out.

Also the NFL is a big fish and I think any unbiased observer can arrive at the conclusion that something here may not be on the level.  Laws might not have been broken, but there is potential here for a huge scandal, PR disaster for the NFL.  There have to be investigative journalists, documentary film makers, etc... sniffing around the story and process that lead us here.

"Taking Down" the NFL or it's commissioner is probably a great way to make a name for yourself.  Here's hoping that someone with the right platform, determination and contacts is already elbow deep into this mess and looking to blow the top off of it.

I remember Pat Kirwan & Jim Miller stating on their Sirius/XM show that the whole investigation was a total waste of time and money.
Edit:  I dont remember the date and time of the statement nor am I 100% certain it was this commentator combination.  However, it is more probable than not that it was these two.  So, essentially, I have no proof.
Kirwan and Miller were on Mad Dog's show this afternoon. Russo was screaming gibberish and Kirwan/Miller were laughing at him and riling him up. Literally telling Russo that he was making things up to fit his own warped narrative, especially since Russo admitted that he hadn't read the Wells report, but KNEW that Brady himself had cheated.

Simultaneously on LeBatard's show, Michael Irvin solidified his position on the Good Guys List. Tempest in a teapot, Wells report has lots of holes, was never a story before but the NFL screwed it up... He was surprisingly rational and cogent. He's always been a huge Brady fan, but was able to put the situation into its proper context.

You may be on to something.
In an insufferably long drive yesterday I spent the time screaming at various sports talk radio stations until I heard a voice I'd never heard before, a voice saying it was all a conspiracy. That voice was none other than Rush Limbaugh! Do people actually listen to this? I knew something was amiss and it was not some other sports show when I discovered that it was not Goodell but Obama, Ted Kennedy and, more generally, people like me who are attacking the Pats.

Who knew?

I feel bad for my role in all of this, from now on, us librulls will stop being so autocratic and stateist (there was something about federalism in all of this for Rush)!

(This was actually the only time in the previous four months where I thought, you know, maybe Bob Kravitz has a point.)

Oh for the days when Rush (IIRC) was enraged at the Patriots for being communist since they all ran on the field together at the SB vs. St. Louis.

I'd rather not add Rush to a white list since, you know, he is Rush. I also did not stick around long enough to find out if, in fact, the worm turned.

My son works at a bar in Ft. Lauderdale that Irvin visits frequently, and Irvin has befriended him.  I advised my son to be a little cautious when he told me this, but my son says he is a really, really good guy and is great to everyone in the place, whether it's employees or star gazers who want a pic.  "Very chill."  My son told him that he and I were Pats fans, and he couldn't say enough good things about Brady, Belichick, and the organization, pre- and post-DeflateGate.  He can get a little hysterical on the NFLN, but at the end of the day seems pretty grounded compared to the other sillies that Eisen trots across the stage.

When someone posted (somewhere on here, I'm sorry I can't remember) that folks should ask Aikman if he was "generally aware" of the Irvin shenanigans, I actually felt conflicted because in my experience Irvin is one of the good guys. And not just because he says nice things about the team I root for, but because - despite an outsize personality known, generally and historically, to be a bit over-the-top - the opinions he typically expresses are pretty damn level-headed, regardless of the sometimes ostentacious presentation.

I'd much rather hear this line of questioning directed at an entitled douchebag like John Elway re: the Broncos salary-cap cheats. It's amazing/appalling to me that, in terms of assholery, of the two figures, Tom Brady is the one considered far above the other. However talented and terrific he absolutely was, Elway - from BEFORE gracing this league with his presence - has been the very picture of the smug, smirking entitled prince behind the domineering football dad. Just...YUCK.

Good stuff on Irvin. I remember two specific things on Irvin that made me think more of him.

When Riley Cooper got in trouble for the n-bomb and everyone was going nuts in the media, Irvin was interviewed on the radio and gave a very reasoned response explaining that its a difficult issue. Explained that black athletes and commentators were speaking calling it an outrage, but that as a black man he uses that term in friendly tones with other black people and athletes and even allows his son to use it the same way. He wondered what type of message that sends to non-black athletes and basically said, its a confusing issue. He didn't have the answer, but acknowledged the hypocrisy in the outrage even though the type of usage may have been different.

Also way back to when he was arrested on the charge where he was falsely accused. I don't remember the actual charge, but I remember the video of him leaving jail and reporters swarming his car. He was telling them he was innocent and that he wanted the same coverage, same reporting when the charge gets dropped. He said something like "report it the same way, that you did when I was arrested, same headline that you did, front page like you did..." I thought that was classic.
