We'll see if this gets enough action to stay on the first page and whether it is helpful to people!

Perhaps just to fill the void from losing the Lowe Post podcast twice a week I've been exploring more NBA content - primarily podcasts for me, but also interested in Youtube and other sources.

To get the ball rolling, my personal list of listens/watches (not in any particular order). And I am sure many of you will have better and different ideas and reactions.

1. Dunc'd On pod: Lots of views on these guys, they podcast a ton. I will say I am listening more these days and like them, but it's a little one-note a lot of the time.
2. The Dunker Spot: Nekias Duncan and Steve Jones podcast. For my money, the best x and o and team tactics podcast; both very well informed, Steve Jones used to be a video scout in the NBA. Also does a bunch of W coverage.
3. Hollinger and Duncan pod: Lots of views on this one; I like Hollinger as a different perspective than Nate, though he is not always 100% prepared or great on the details. Generally once a week.
4. Thinking Basketball podcast and Youtube: Very good stuff, though personally I think this is really Ben Taylor wiht a co-host JAG (Cody). Too harsh?

Above are my regular rotation. Below are less so...but ones I update/listen to on occasion.

5. Hoop Collective. ESPN podcast, Brian Windhorts with Tim McMahon and Tim Bontemps. not a big fan, though reasonable source of rumors/info espeically arond deadline and FA
6. Jason Timpf - Youtube? Others watch him more than I do, interesting guy but such a laker homer! Best on breaking down games and tactics, often with really good explanatory videos
7. NBA Front Office Podcast: Keith Smith and Laker Fanboy Trevor Lane. Keith is very good, and one of the best cap guys out there. As name suggests, a bit more about front office than scouting, though covers full league.
8. The Ringer NBA show. Not a huge fan, panel-style discussion which varies based on who is on it each time. Some good, some bad in my experience---I like Howard Beck and Raja Bell when on

I assume Shams and Jake Fischer will pod occasionally, not sure where they are landing on that. In each case, I find them useful around trade deadlne/FA for rumors

I don't know whether we call Bill Simmons podcast basketball, but I definitely listen to him on basketball (and less on other stuff). Opinions vary widely on Russillo, I know.

What else should I listen to/watch/read? What do you feel differently about? What's news we should share here for others?

Last year, I listened to a lot of Karalis's podcast - Locked on Cs - but haven't listened this year. He's usually pretty good about breaking down Cs games but there hasn't been a ton to break down.

Locked on NBA does a daily recap of the previous night's games. Decent listen from people who actually follow the team if you want a recap of the evening.

just started for the first time to listen to Sam Vincenie - Game Theory podcast. They seem cromulent as podcasters but from their discussion of the Lakers/Redick/some of the sets Redick is having LAL run, it appears that both hosts know a good deal about basketball so I'm wondering if their video breakdowns are better than their podcasts.

As for Thinking Basketball, I like Cody fine but he's pretty important to the show IMO. I don't think I'd want to listen to 90 minutes of Ben Taylor talking about basketball. Besides, Cody is a huge Jrue Holiday fan so how bad could he be?

Thanks for putting your list together @PedroKsBambino

The Old Man & the 3/JJ Redick was among the best player interviewers. A big loss.

Thinking Basketball /Ben Taylor are the gold standard IMO. Cody is solid, but Ben is the star of the show.

Some "Locked On" Shows are decent. John Karalis is a Celtic homer, but usually has an "insider" view of the Boston NBA media legion.

Timpf has added some video breakdown which helps you suck the marrow out of a game.

Bobby Marks, ESPN, does a decent job explaining CAP gymnastics to the average fan

I'll have to give Thinking Basketball a listen. The only one I really never missed was Old Man and The 3 but that is no more. Every time I try listening to one of these someone says something so confidently that is so incorrect that I change it quickly never to return. Never did that with JJ and I'm going to give Ben a shot. Thanks PKB!

Thinking Basketball's videos during playoffs series are really great, as is their "Greatest Peaks" back catalog. The deep dives on Jordan, Hakeem, Bird, Kareem, Duncan etc are amazing.

Ben Taylor's biggest strength is that he's willing to change his mind in public, and get very in-depth on why he's doing so. Lifelong learner.

My list:
1. Thinking Basketball (sadly infrequent, but the production quality is high, so I get why)
2. Timpf -- when he's doing game action and not soap opera narratives, he's nails a lot of subtle things. Obviously can mute him about the Lakers, but I price that in.
3. Dunker's Spot for things like playoff series previews and big in-season trends with teams
4. I give Karalis a listen when I have a short drive and want some cheap Celtics porn

And.....that's about it. Really need peak Lowe to make a comeback.

That's awesome. Those are the best positions when you flip as you have a distinct and justifiable reason for doing so.

I'm not a podcast listener (might listen to Karalis occasionally driving) and don't have the patience for long videos. I do like the 10 takeaways style pieces where you've got video clips illustrating written text. Got anything you like in that vein?

Adam Taylor does a good job on his Substack of putting up videos of plays each day.

Good reminder on Karlis---he's profilic and pretty good! He was in my old feed before I upgraded phone, and that's exactly what I hoped for with thread!

I agree with Cody helping the show, and I don't dislike him....he just seems to be shooting off the cuff a lot.

Fully agree on the "Slam n' Jam" podcast.
Usually starts with a nice segment about some current games and trends. Than a deep dive on a random team each week with a guest beat reporter of that team*.
And a nice and very fun quiz at the end that is often way beyond my basketball knowledge but great to guess along nevertheless...

* they spin a digital randomizer wheel each week to determine "their team" for the following week. So you often get good conversations about the Hornets, Bulls or Pelicans instead of the same 5-8 teams all other podcasters talk about.

Yep. Just a well produced podcast with excellent guests. Right amount of analytics, hot takes, humor, and trivia.

Kirk Goldsberry is back after a 1-year sabbatical.

small nugget at 1:04

In 2019 Adam Silver brought Kirk to NBA HQ to discuss moving the 3pt arc. One of the suggestions was to get rid of the Corner3.
Brad Stevens, on the Competition Committee: HELL NO! You'll never see a slam dunk again; it will ruin spacing.

Maybe teams can start defending the perimeter better if they want to stop the Celtic 3pt barrage.

I mentioned that I took my first listen to Sam Vecenie's podcast "Game Theory." He was doing an "overreaction to week 1" pod but he and his co-host had some interesting "overreactions" to the Cs. Start at 48:50 here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/nba-opening-week-overreactions-lakers-celtics-nuggets/id1054081827?i=1000674652415.

I did not realize that the Cs came 13 3Ps from beating the season team record (GSW has the most with 1363. BOS last year hit 1351.) As of 2 days ago, BOS was on pace to hit over 1800 3Ps.

Sam also said (as I mentioned in JT thread) that he thought JT was the best player in the NBA in week 1. Always good to hear someone give JT some props.

I'll say I do find listening to them after games or during games to be entertaining. Shaq not so much but the other three have such great on-air chemistry that it's fun, even if it's a bit like junk food for sports nerds. Shaq'tin A Fool is one of those things you need to have around to remind you that this stuff is fun, and should always be fun. It's not a competition of spreadsheets, it's a competition of fallible humans with personalities.

But they can replicate that stuff elsewhere, for sure. Under new management. And I certainly don't turn to them for in-depth analysis (other than where Kenny goes up and illustrates a play or something good / bad).

Those rankings had Jrue #28, and Porzingis #40, btw, with players like Kawhi at #30 and Zion at #36. So they did incorporate some consideration of availability, of defense, etc. But then they go and rank Embiid at #7, and say stuff like:

"Barkley's was guided in large part by versatility. Shaq emphasized winning. And Smith based a lot of his calls on six critical factors (scoring, rebounding, passing, defense, leadership and the ability to control the pace of a game)."

Shaq emphasized winning? And then ranked Luka #3, Embiid #7, Edwards #9, all ahead of Brown #10 and Tatum #11? What the hell winning is he taking into account? He's got SGA #8, dude has made the playoffs once since becoming a star, and lost in the second round. Nonsensical doesn't begin to describe it.

The Inside the NBA crew is higher on (#15) Bam Adebayo than just about every other outlet, with Barkley having him all the way up at No. 12 on his individual list.

"His mental toughness makes him special," Barkley said.

Yeah, but his limitations mean that a well-constructed team can exploit him relentlessly and deny him on the few ways he actually knows how to score.

Their comments on Tatum suggest they have absolutely no idea what makes him great, and (I guess) can't see the attention he draws from opposing teams that opens up opportunities for his teammates. But then again, we're kinda learning that nobody else in the national NBA media seems to understand that either, save maybe Ben Taylor and Timpf.

I don't know how, or why some of you torment yourself by reading some of this shit. These guys are clowns and provide entertainment. Nobody should take anything they say seriously, for it is more about getting clicks and views than anything else. I mean look at Barkley's list. He has Marcus Smart at #45, just one spot behind Donovan Mitchell, which is a perfect example at how terrible he is at this

Like @InstaFace said they are entertainment junk food

Shaq doesn't even pretend to pay attention to the details of the game and is strictly a personality/caricature.

They really appreciate Jaylen Brown, #9 is the highest I've seen anywhere. Not even the most ardent JB fan in the Cellar would call Brown a TOP10 NBA player. So it's not really an anti-Celtic thing. More like an anti-advanced metrics ranking.

I think he’s close but I also think Tatum is better. I have Tatum top 4 or 5 and Brown top 12

White put on a processing speed clinic on Sunday.

“Sometimes it’s handling, sometimes it’s screening, sometimes it’s defense, running that loose ball down,” Mazzulla said. “Just makes big-time plays. He (Derrick White) has a tendency to do that, but I think that’s really the identity of our team. People can make different types of plays at different times.”

NBA Media: Too many 3s!!!!

Brad: More quality 3s on the way

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxEAPOaJJMs
They did a good job identifying that a key part of MazzullaBall is avoiding overpassing. Corresponds with Tatum's drop in dribbles taken as well.

Everything is about creating small advantages through initial screening, cutting, and then one pass or a few dribbles. After that, advantage basketball and 2-on-1 hunting takes over.

I will fistpump when a national media member eventually verbalizes that the reason Boston takes so many 3s is that they are trained to execute the 2-on-1 regardless of whether it's at the rim or behind the arc. Those looks just happen to come behind the arc more often because NBA teams hate conceding 1-on-1s at the rim.

That's the bias.

3 defenders running to the hoop whenever a JAY starts getting downhill is a hard habit for defenses to break.

Talking Houston and Orlando defense

Tari Eason is the guy we want for Jrue Holiday, my new binky.
Houston's never moving him. He's a perfect fit for Ime's system although he is 0-12 over the past two games. They already have VanVleet at Jrue's position too.

He'll find some impatient team that feels it's one piece away from contending

I like Eason but this seems a bit over the top. There have been a few Kawhi comps the past several years and well, nobody is Kawhi. Not sure a head coach singing a young players praises means he is untouchable.

Houston can’t sign all their guys. Something’s gotta give. Whether that is Eason or not, who knows. But they aren’t getting a young superstar for him.

Kawhi didn’t become Kawhi until his 4th or 5th year. Early on he couldn’t even dribble when he came out of San Diego St. Eason isn’t far from what Kawhi was early in his career but I think he was speaking mostly in regards to his style of play especially defensively.

OK, but if true, that also means they're not signing up for a Jrue Holiday at $34.2 next year, $34.8 for 26-27, and $37.2 in 27-28. Maybe they go for 2 of those years, if extensions haven't kicked in yet and so he'd be coming off the books (or they think they can move him as an expiring). But more likely, they just can't fit him in.

To me, a trade-partner fit for Jrue looks more like "OKC a year ago" - young stars on rookie contracts so they have the salary room, but enough star power already that they clearly have a right to believe they're one big player upgrade away from some real championship equity. Brooklyn and the Spurs come to mind.

I guess it's possible GSW might see that Curry has a few more years left in him, and want to put a reliable vet in the backcourt who's going to be better than the Podz / Melton / Hield pupu platter. Big-market team that doesn't care if they go into the tax if it makes them more interesting / relevant. But I think that's a less likely profile for us.

HRB mentioned the Clippers, and that makes a lot of sense. They don't control their picks for awhile, so may as well give the finger to OKC/Philly etc while squeezing out the back end of Harden and Jrue's careers in a nice arena.

Since social media is media, I'll put this rant here.

I get some video on Facebook that says "This is Why No One Watches the NBA Today." It's from, I think, a Lakers vs Suns game with missed threes, a turnover, some more missed threes, and probably ended with another turnover, and timeout. You know, a bad sequence in a regular season game.

There were lots of comments agreeing. And I thought: "I bet all of you complained about the era of isolation ball, too." That they said: "Look how selfish the players are."

People just want to complain and be nostalgic. Do people really want Kobe pretending to be Jordan for 20 seconds and bricking a fadeaway?

Good basketball, now, is really friggin' good basketball.

Jrue is local, so he'd probably welcome a Clippers move.

GSW, Houston, SAS, Detroit, Memphis (move Smart's expiring) all make some sense as potential Holiday Destinations (sponsored by Lunn Poly)

These people already have their minds made up. This product is incredible and of course you can put together clips and reels like the awesome Rob Perez “Basketball is beautiful” Twitter posts. They need to be locked in a room with Thibs and forced to hear him break down a Knicks game from the Mark Jackson/Anthony Mason era. That will surely change their minds.
