You could create team-years multiply the years by the number of teams the city/area has in the 4 major sports so NY is 63 team-years without a championship (2 MLB, 2 NBA, 2 NFL and 3 NHL) , Minneapolis is 112, Miami is 24, LA is 40, Boston is 1
I will look into this once I'm back at work (Won't spend my weekend over spreadsheets...).
But I think your LA example is already incorrect, since there wasn't a NFL team in LA until the 2016 season, so we cannot compute it that easily...
The New Jersey teams (Devils, Nets until 2012) do count as NY teams as well, right?

This does not compute. Boston is either 0 (Sox and Pats the current title holders) or a lot more than 1, seeing as though the Celtics haven’t won it all since 2008 and the Bruins since 2011.
4 teams times 0.3 years since the last title equals 1 team-year

Yes you could adjust by how long the team was in a city for but it was late and I saw the opportunity to make NY and LA look worse

Ok but one more on that meme:

Boston is one of 7 metropolitan areas with champions in all 4 NA sports (the others are Chicago, LA/Anaheim, Baltimore/DC, Philly, NY/NJ and Detroit - argue with me on Bal/DC if you like but that's how I'm drawing it up). There are 7 more with 3 of 4 (Dallas, Bay Area, Pitt, Miami, St Louis, Milw/GB and Cleveland) and 7 more with 2 (Houston/San Antonio, Tampa/Orlando, Denver, Seattle/Portland/Vancouver, KC, Toronto and Minneapolis/St Paul).

As far as a city/region's last championship the top 5 standings are:
1. Boston (NFL - 2019)
2. Bay Area (NBA - 2018)
3. Bal/DC (NHL - 2018)
4. Philly (NFL - 2018)
5. Houston (MLB - 2017)
just missed top 5: Pitt (NHL - 2017)

For the time of the last time since a city/region won in 2 sports it's:
1. Boston (NFL - 2019, MLB - 2018)
2. Chicago (MLB - 2016, NHL 2015)
3. Bay Area (NBA - 2018, MLB - 2014)
4. Bal/DC (NHL - 2018, NFL - 2013)
5. NY/NJ (NFL - 2012, MLB - 2009)
just missed top 5: Pittsburgh (NHL - 2017, NFL - 2009)
just missed top 5: Philly (NFL - 2018, MLB - 2008)

For the time of the last time since a city/region won in 3 different sports it's:
1. Boston (NFL - 2019, MLB - 2018, NHL - 2011)
2. NY/NJ (NFL - 2012, MLB - 2009, NHL - 2003)
3. LA/Anaheim (NHL - 2014, NBA - 2010, MLB - 2002)
4. Chicago (MLB - 2016, NHL 2015, NBA - 1998)
5. Dallas (NBA - 2011, NHL - 1999, NFL - 1996)
just missed top 5: Bay Area (NBA - 2018, MLB - 2014, NFL -1995)

And finally the order for the 7 city/regions that have won in all 4 sports:
1. Boston (NFL - 2019, MLB - 2018, NHL - 2011, NBA - 2008)
2. Chicago (MLB - 2016, NHL 2015, NBA - 1998, NFL - 1986)
3. LA/Anaheim (NHL - 2014, NBA - 2010, MLB - 2002, NFL - 1984)
4. Baltimore/DC (NHL - 2018, NFL - 2013, MLB - 1983, NBA - 1978)
5. Philadelphia (NFL - 2018, MLB - 2008, NBA - 1983, NHL - 1975)
6. NY/NJ (NFL - 2012, MLB - 2009, NHL - 2003, NBA - 1970)
7. Detroit (NHL - 2008, NBA - 2004, MLB - 1984, NFL - 1957)

Draw your own conclusions...:eyeroll:

It’s wonderful that the Boston teams are in the midst of a golden age, but this thread has turned from chronicling the Nation’s Tears regarding the patriots’ success to just being a giant circle jerk that would make Yankees fans circa 2003 blush.

Here:

https://deadspin.com/well-at-least-david-backes-is-in-a-cup-final-1834838187
While you're correct that any outside fan that read this would hate Boston fans even more, I think all four sports doing well just amplifies the vitriol aimed at the Pats. Everyone is fatigued of Boston doing well and the Pats began the run and have been the most successful team of it. Also, this championship era could end at any moment and we could become Minneapolis, so, I think we should revel in it for as long as we can.

Yeah, I'm not saying people shouldn't enjoy it. Just that this thread has suffered some major mission creep. It's like people aren't complaining *enough* about the Patriots to satisfy some folks.

It's funny watching Warriors fans grapple with what Patriots fans have had to deal with for years.
Both teams SUCKED for a lot of their existence but had die-hard fans who are now a little cocky and openly root for this run of greatness never to end. Every Warriors fan is accused of being a converted Lakers fan (just as Pats fans are accused of all being bandwagoners), people actively hate/root against both teams despite them having lots of likable players, it's assumed that each team can convert average players into key pieces, the national media is constantly trying to find chinks in their armor, declare their run "over," and turn every minor argument into a sign of unrest, etc. It's tough to be a dynasty.

Up until recently I used to play ball at an athletic club with a lot of families, and about half the kids are always wearing Curry/Warriors stuff. They are just kids, but it does make me a little sad.

I was working with a guy about a week ago who told me that his sports teams were: Yankees/Lakers/NY Giants/Notre Dame football/Duke basketball/Barcelona.

yeah but... the NY Giants?

If he picked 49ers, Cowboys, or the Patriots, it'd at least make sense.

edit: Tom Brady has the same number of SB titles as Eli Manning has seasons where he made the playoffs.

The league is selecting a game a week in celebration of its NFL100 campaign. The Patriots are on the list twice -- against the Giants, because of the 2 NYG wins in the Super Bowl, and against the Eagles, for splitting those SBs.

Couldn't give the Patriots a slot marking a win, w/o a loss attached

Did you use initials?

At least your boss knew the reference...or was he unimpressed simply because of the napkin?

Interesting text message....

My brother lives in FL and has a lot of very wealthy / high profile clients for his business. One happens to be a huge Pats fan. Reportedly this guy was told by a FBI agent buddy that Kraft is under some huge investigation and is going to be raided sooner than later. IMO there's no way an agent would risk his career leaking that, even IF it were true... but figured I'd share on the snowball's chance in hell it's true. :D
So I was too lazy to check if this has been discussed already, but I guess [icon]'s brother's source is pretty damned good.

EDIT: Looks like I'm pretty late to the party. Oh well.

Indeed, that was pretty crazy that it was true.

I told my brother I didn't believe his source, as the odds a damn FBI investigation had leaked to some rich dude in FL but not the media were.... low.

Oops. :)

It happens though... some years ago, my mother was traveling for work. On her way home, she had a layover in Charlotte. She was sitting and overheard 2 guys (feds, as it turns out) talking about the Mayor of Providence (Buddy Cianci) and how they were really closing in on him, etc. She certainly thought it was strange.
Sure enough, a few months later he was arrested.

That's different from your situation for sure as this is just an example of sloppy agents talking at an airport gate for a flight destined for, wait for it, Providence but it shows that sometimes stuff gets out that you don't believe and then all of a sudden it all makes sense.

I realize this is from three Super Bowls ago, but I hadn’t seen this particular Seahawks viewing party video, and I’ve watched a lot of them. Forgive me if it’s a repeat. Also you’re welcome.

I watched and enjoyed it. That play really was the greatest sports play in history. The emotional swing from both sides is unprecedented. This was captured perfectly in the gif of Richard Sherman.

I was watching an episode of HBO's Ballers today, and they main characters are talking to the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, who says, "Do you know how difficult it is to operate the greatest brand in sports?" and Rob Corddry's character goes: "You own the New England Patriots too?"

This might sound weird but I don't really think of the Patriots as a "brand", in the sense of a mark that stands as shorthand for the quality you can expect in the underlying product. Everyone here knows that the Pats were mediocre before Belichick, sucked hard before Kraft, and the current quality only goes as far as TB12 and BB carry it forward. When Gregg Popovich hangs 'em up, I rather doubt the Spurs' "brand" alone is going to hold much water 5 years later. The Cowboys had 2-3 distinct periods of great success, decades apart, to the point where they were always kinda good in the era of the modern NFL. But how many sports franchises can be said to have a brand that transcends one single period of success in their history? The Yankees, the Canadiens, I guess the Packers' mystique has sustained for a while... I guess I'd have to credit the Lakers at this point given the past few years. But I really don't think of Belichick and Brady as having built a dynasty you know, worthy of the Pharaohs. If Jonathan Kraft proves a meddler or Belichick's successors prove idiots, the wheel turns and we're back to merely remembering these glory days, insistence on any sort of "brand" notwithstanding.

It doesn’t really sound weird but arbitrary. What other team has had almost 2 decades of dominance.. (and you’re completely glossing over the free agent era/ the nature of the playoffs/super bowl and how much more difficult it is now)? The fact that one can even compare the pats to the cowboys/Steelers/packers should be enough.

And the pats were in the super bowl in 86 and 96 so it’s not like they were 100% horrible.

What is the definition of "brand" in this context? If I had to say, the Yankees' "brand" is Classy Success. The Steelers' "brand" is Hardnose, Defense-First, Play. The Canadiens' "brand" is "Hockey History".

Frankly, the Pats' "brand" right now is probably either "Ruthlessly Efficient" or (depending on who you're asking) "Winning Boring and Shady".

Note that "brand" does not necessarily line up to reality. It's all about perception and fostering that perception. I'm not sure what the Patriots try to exude except "we win a lot", which is probably exactly what BB wants; to not have a "brand". I bet he absolutely hates this type of subjective type of crap.

Last week Forbes ranked the world's 50 most valuable sports franchises in the world and placed the Pats at 7th overall. 2nd most valuable NFL franchise (Cowboys) and 4th most valuable franchise in the country (Cowboys, Yankees, Knicks). They are undoubtedly a brand, however one wishes to define it.

"let's also respect the other people that have done it the right way"

I'd love for him to list out the teams/people that do it the right way.

I'd bet you Mike Tomlin is on that list.

P.S. Bill Belichick has never intentionally interfered with a live play on the field that could easily have lots of unintended consequences.

So I don't mind people like Max Kellerman and Rob Parker being complete trolls. As BB would say "They are what they are". But this is an awful troll as BB has been called a cheater for over a decade and ESPN led with BB is a cheater from 2007 on. If you're going to troll, at least do it well.

It seems that Sean McVay realized right in the middle of the Super Bowl that he had screwed up:

https://sports.yahoo.com/sean-mc-vay-knows-he-screwed-up-the-super-bowl-and-his-rams-are-stronger-for-it-162141725.html
The realization didn’t come in a film session. There wasn’t some epiphany days or weeks later. Instead, unforgiving reality struck on the biggest stage of Sean McVay’s football life. And it was both brutal and instantaneous.

This is how the Los Angeles Rams coach recounts the lessons of his Super Bowl LIII loss. Like someone describing their slow motion agony of dropping a glass of red wine on white carpet – but still processing two thoughts before impact:

1. “Oh crap.”
2. “I have some immediate regrets.”

Apr 24, 2019

“For McVay, the “oh crap” moment last February was watching the New England Patriots morph parts of their defensive scheme into something that hadn’t consistently been on tape. Mixed defensive fronts. Scrambled pass coverages. Odd personnel groups. Basically, dipping into all manner of things that didn’t readily fit their identity in 2018.”

SERIOUSLY? This surprised him? The idea that the Patriots might trot out shit you haven’t seen before, that they’d morph into something other, you didn’t prepare for that possibility? Is that not football coach malpractice? I don’t mean to be all hard-o about it, but Christ, everyone on SOSH would make that the main screaming headline in their game plan prep outline, no? Am I overreacting?

The comments surprisingly aren't all garbage. Let me spare you the effort:

pregame video of Sean McVay to an assistant…. "WOW this place is awesome isn't it?... look at that roof ! … amazing... Bill Belichick to ref "we're closing that roof before kickoff right" …. "well it takes eight minutes to close so will it be closed for kickoff or not"
This is a restatement of the obvious. No one who watched the game and had even a little knowledge about football had any doubt that he was outcoached big time.
He’s coached 2 years and this writer makes him sound like the second coming.
So he learned the Patriots(or any good team) are going to change things up in the moat important game of the year? Wow that is mind blowing insight. He might end up being a HoF coach, but the anointment happened way too soon. Rams were loaded with quality players after having tanked for a decade.

They had a great season and lost a close game to arguably the greatest coach and QB to ever play the game, whose team by that time was playing great defense and showcasing maybe the best run-blocking in franchise playoff history. There's no shame in that.

And of course, the inevitable:

(Ryan): McVay and Goff showed the entire world they didn't belong in that Super Bowl and that New Orleans was robbed of giving us an entertaining game. Not a chance Brees would've played as poorly as Goff did.
(Jim E): If Brees was clutch "in the big one" he wouldn't have thrown a pick in overtime.
All QB's have their moments, Brady "oopsed" against the Chiefs but lived on, you know why.
Goff didn't play badly, it was more of Belichick out coached McVay who didn't have his QB ready for all the facets Belichick can create.

There are some pretty delicious "Cheater!" tears there, but frankly I prefer the utter resignation and recognition of Belichick's genius.

So you need to prepare for the unknown?

I am not sure how you do this. Is it known unknowns? Or unknown knowns? Or the tricky unknown unknowns?

He learned the correct lesson. Now he needs to stfu in the media. That’s rule 1a.
Yup, he's being too honest, that's his problem here. The Pats defensive gameplan was universally praised as brilliant. It should come as no surprise then that he wasn't prepared for it. But by talking about it like this, he's throwing read meat in front of trolls and mediots who will claim that it's evidence he wasn't prepared for a new look at all. I'm sure he was, he just wasn't prepared for one that was so out of character for the Pats.
