I was at a breakfast with Steve Baker, NFL agent this morning. I asked him who was the best, most shrewd front office in the NFL, and he waxed on about Philly and San Francisco for a few minutes before saying "Oh, and obviously, the best by far is Belichick, no matter what you think of his integrity."

Afterwards, I asked him what he thought about Brady's recent contract restructure. "I think Bob Kraft has a secret deal worked out with Tom Brady to get paid less now, and he'll pay him more after his career ends. It's blatant circumvention of the salary cap, and I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it." I then asked him why teams like SF and Denver had blatantly cheated by circumventing the cap, and yet no one talks about them, they only talk about the "Cheatriots" and he said "Well they ARE the Cheatriots! How do those balls get deflated?" Having lost some confidence in him, I said "The Ideal Gas Law? PV=nRT, right?" And he waved his hands and said "Look, everyone's cheating, just the Patriots do it better than anyone else, but they are cheating."

I didn't leave him with my current Patriots fan motto, which is "Fuck Everyone But Us" sung to the tune of the Chariots of Fire melody.

One time in a group of friends during grad school I made a casual remark about how everyone had cheated on a school assignment at some point in the 16+ years we had all spent in school.  To my surprise, more than one of the people in the group said that they had NEVER cheated on anything, ever.  No copied homeworks.  No looking over at one question on someone else's filled out scantron sheet.  Nothing.  Not once.

Sometimes when you've convinced yourself that "everyone is doing X" you find out that you're wrong.

That's my impression. Anyone who says they never cheated during school, in some fashion, is full of shit.

Possible but I really don't think so.

I guess if you had an anonymous survey and in it 99% of people admit to cheating then that's a more reliable answer than the one time I had this random conversation with a rather unique group of people.

Doesn't seem that bright for an agent to call a team that he may have to negotiate with cheaters or possibly alienate players on that team that may one day be looking for representation.

Never overestimate the professionalism or intelligence of those in the sports industry.

There are certainly some very bright people, but like any other field, there's a lot of C students too.

Not even helping a friend during a test? I did that once and got away with it because the teacher was half blind. The fact that I still remember it 100 years later makes me think I'm not proud of it. Guess she was too vain to get glasses.

Resilient Tom Brady Critics Already Looking Ahead To Next Season

WASHINGTON—After the veteran New England Patriots quarterback secured his record-tying fourth Super Bowl championship and third Super Bowl MVP, scores of Tom Brady’s harshest critics across the nation announced Friday that they are already eagerly looking ahead to next season. “It was a disappointing end to the year, but it’s over now, so it’s time to start laying down next season’s groundwork for why Brady ultimately doesn’t belong in the conversation of the all-time best NFL quarterbacks,” said Pennington, NJ resident Isaac Reynolds, who, along with millions of other tireless Brady detractors, has already turned his attention toward the coming six months of building arguments as to why the Spygate and Deflategate controversies tarnish all of the 37-year-old’s accomplishments.

So close yet so far away.

Fuck. I feel like I'm behind enemy lines. All my Seahawk fan friends won't talk about the game. It's all I want to do! I don't press it because we've been there twice since 2007. I want to tell them they will never experience anything like '07 but it falls on deaf ears. The hardcore among them get it but the new bandwagon fans still have no idea how their amazing team could have possibly lost.

People like to rationalize their cheating by convincing themselves that everyone else is cheating as well.

People also like to rationalize their (often extremely minor) infractions by basically 'misremembering' them as not happening. People talk themselves into and out of all sorts of stuff.

Of course, there are people who have quite literally never cheated on anything. But of the people in that group who all said 'nope never did it' some of them probably did.

But I bet they all drive over the speed limit.

Jerry Rice, who called the Pats cheaters over Deflategate, admits to having used Stickum on his gloves, which was illegal.

I'm sure the nation's outrage will be suitably recorded. Unleash the asterisks!
Rice should keep his mouth shut, he of the domestic violence charge (wife) back when, which was dropped, I guess. Google doesn't come up with anything on it, but the allegation happened, while he was playing, as I recall. Maybe he's innocent, but where there's smoke, there's often fire. There were even TV shots of his wife back then. Why would she submit to filming for TV if nothing happened? Then, Rice comes out last year and says a 49er ought to be benched for the same thing.

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2014/09/18/49ers-hall-of-famer-jerry-rice-says-team-should-take-ray-mcdonald-off-field-amid-domestic-violence-accusations/

Another thing about Rice, he was the biggest whiner as far as not getting enough balls thrown his way (yes, that's right, the guy with all time records in everything complained about not getting the ball enough). It came to a head the year of Super Bowl XXIII and then they threw everything his way. I'll always respect John Taylor and Roger Craig, Montana, et al, from those teams, but I hate Rice. When he comes on TV, I change the station. Great player, but an asshole, IMO.

What's next? Is the GREAT Bill Walsh going to come out and admit that they shut off communication devices when they had the first 15 plays of the game scripted in two playoff games against the Giants, who then had to turn off their radios?

Reiss calls out Rice:

C'mon Jerry, you're better than that.

Like others, such as former Dallas and San Francisco defensive end Charles Haley, you're entitled to your opinion. But here's a suggestion: Take a deep inventory of your own career and how closely you followed the rules before firing away at others.

Otherwise, you might soon be referred to as Jerry Rice*.

He is definitely in his right to bash Jerry Rice who admitted to cheating as well. Don't see the problem there. if anyone is a hypocrite it's Jerry Rice.

It's becoming fascinating to watch everyone who tries to jump in on this scandal to take their whack at the Patriots end up with shit all over them. It's actually getting to the point that the phenomenon itself is evidence that the whole scandal was bullshit, so any malicious energy anyone puts in towards it gets reversed back on them like some sort of cursed artifact in a scifi or fantasy movie.

Basically, deflategate has turned into the most karmically active thing I have ever seen. It belongs in a museum.

Someone did slash his tires a week and a half ago here in Indy. He attributed it to Pats fans, which made me chuckle. If you're Greg Doyel, how the fuck do you figure out which one of the millions of people who hate your guts decided to slash your tires, and for what reason?

Oh noes!
Via KING-5 News in Seattle, the team’s license to use the 12th Man slogan expires soon.
The term was first used by Texas A&M, years ago.  In 1990, the school obtained federal trademark protection for the 12th Man phrase.
Litigation against the Seahawks resulted in a settlement that acknowledged Texas A&M’s rights to the label, and that licensed the Seahawks to make limited use of the term for payment of only $5,000 per year.
The deal, struck in 2006 and renewed in 2011, runs out in 2016.
