Mac Jones has thrown a career-high 3 pass TD today vs the Browns

Jones is the first NE rookie with 3+ pass TD in a game since Drew Bledsoe (4 TD) in Week 18, 1993 vs MIA

Jones would be the first rookie in franchise history with 3+ pass TD & 0 INT in a single game

Mac was as sharp today as he looked shaky last week.

19 of 23, 198 yards, 3 TD 0 INT.

A few of the completions were of the useless variety, by which I mean, for 4 yards or less and no first down/TD. Bolden caught one for 1 yard and Stevenson caught 3 for 6.

He had four completions for 19 or more yards - one Bolden screen plus shots downfield to Meyers, Bourne (beautiful strike to Bourne between two defenders for a TD) and Henry, all three placed perfectly.

On third down, Mac converted 6 of 8 tries - 6 of 7 passing with 1 TD and took a sack.

I believe this is just an alternative way of noting that Brissett didn't get 3+ TD in either of his 2 starts in 2016.

Unless I'm mistaken, no other NE rookies started at QB in between Bledsoe and Mac Jones.

Before Bledsoe, the last one to do it was Jim Plunkett who threw 4 in a game in 1971.

Before him, someone named Tom Sherman in 1968, in the AFL. No one else.

There aren't that many likely candidates - I would have guessed Grogan but he didn't do it.

Wasn't Jimmy G a rookie when he filled in for Brady during his suspension?

Mac's four incompletions today were:

-50 yard deep shot that was well covered and had a safety lurking too, overthrew the receiver slightly but sort of a good overthrow in that you only want the WR to have a play on the ball given the coverage.
-Garrett tipped ball on the short out on 3rd and 14 when they'd essentially settled for the FG anyway at the end of the half.
-Rollout intentional throwaway
-Stevenson drop on 2nd and goal from the 3

He basically didn't miss all day.

That is awesome. Those pictures will be the first thing BB puts up on the screen in "game film review." Jones is going to get merciless amounts of shit and it will be the greatest team bonding experience in history.

New England will have collectively failed if there are not multiple farheads of those at the next game.

Just like to point out that Mac’s handsomeness curve has apparently surpassed Brady’s early career.

This calls for another look at Evan Lazar's CPOE vs EPA/play. This one is for Weeks 4 through 10 (ie, the past 7 games). CPOE looks roughly unchanged but he's in a different place on EPA/play:

How good is Sean McVay for tricking the league into thinking Goff was an "ok" quarterback?

This was to me his best game, he had some pass placements that were amazing. There was one pass on a deep out to the left that was towards the edge of his line drive arm strength. The kind that made people worry about whether he could make it, it wasn't rocketed in, maybe hung a bit, but it was in such a good spot that either his guy was gonna get it, or it was gonna go out of bounds.

I thought the out he threw to Hunter Henry (that I believe was called back) was very promising. Definitely had the zip you want to see on that type of pass/route.

I am incredibly impressed by his accuracy and touch. The TD to Bourne was in a place that only he could get it. But the touch on the over-the-shoulder sideline throws all season have been really impressive to me. It's an area where, dare I say it, he outdoes TB12.

An interesting question: All other things being equal, would you rather have a QB with great touch and accuracy but a weak arm, or a QB with a cannon but no touch and little accuracy? There are advantages to both situations, of course. And disadvantages too.

It’s not even a question actually.

Isn’t the latter basically Christian Hackenburg? The question answers itself.

I think the more interesting question is what tradeoff are you willing to make for arm strength vs. accuracy vs. touch. (I break out touch from accuracy because I can still see in my minds eye Donovan McNabb throwing accurate lasers to receivers 10 yards away that they couldn't handle.)

And of course, we should acknowledge that pre-snap reads, adjustments at the line, and ability to manipulate the defense real-time with your eyes and posturing matter a lot as well, so perhaps we shouldn't be so focused on QB arms.

Viewing it as a spectrum as opposed to A vs B, I’m going as far to the touch/accuracy side as one can get before the lack of arm strength renders someone unplayable.

The zipped TD pass to Henry from a few yards out was one of the best I’ve seen him throw. Ball got there in a line and in a hurry and Henry was able to shield off the defender and make the grab.

This is what's weird to me about the offense currently. Because two of those games are AMAZING. And the other two weren't very good (the Bears, at 4.7 yards per play, are dead last in the NFL in that category). The highs are higher than last year, and the lows aren't quite as low, but the ratio of good games to bad ones is about the same.

The offense really has been something for the past month. I seem to remember it took them forever to have any big plays for the first few weeks.
A lot of those 20 yarders have been outstanding play calling on short stuff and outstanding blocking downfield. This team has become very impressive on getting the big guys down the field to block, creating lanes and good blocking by skill position players. It's a bit football nerdy, but it's fun as shit to see in action.

Well, consider the defenses they've played. The Jets are bad. The Chargers are mediocre (#17 in yards allowed), but the last two defenses they've played are elite. Carolina was #1 in the NFL when they played NE (they're still #2, and #6 in points allowed) and Cleveland was #3 (after the NE game they're #5). So managing 24 and 45 points, and 273 and 452 yards, against those defenses, is pretty darned good.

Pats offense last four games...

vs Jets
- Jets vs everyone else: 30.3 points, 400.4 yards
- Jets vs New England: 54 points, 551 yards
- NE vs everyone else differential vs Jets: +23.7 points, +150.6 yards

vs Chargers
- Chargers vs everyone else: 25.1 points, 362.3 yards
- Chargers vs New England: 27 points, 352 yards
- NE vs everyone else differential vs Chargers: +1.9 points, -10.3 yards

vs Panthers
- Panthers vs everyone else: 18.8 points, 281.6 yards
- Panthers vs New England: 24 points, 273 yards
- NE vs everyone else differential vs Panthers: +5.2 points, -8.6 yards

vs Browns
- Browns vs everyone else: 21.8 points, 309.7 yards
- Browns vs New England: 45 points, 452 yards
- NE vs everyone else differential vs Browns: +23.2 points, +142.3 yards

So pretty impressive overall, I'd say, regardless of opponent.

OUTSTANDING performance against Cleveland, no doubt about it. But the offense only scored 17 points against the Panthers, which isn't very good (it also turned the ball over twice, which is also bad). So it was a weak offensive performance. And the 27 points against the Chargers, again, is buoyed by a pick-six. So it's two below-average offensive performances sandwiched by two extraordinary ones. What can we expect going forward? I'm not really sure. The overall numbers look good, but most weeks the offense has been below-average. OTOH when they've been good, they've been AMAZING. Looking forward to a matchup Thursday against a crappy defense, hopefully they can build on Sunday's performance.
