Have to say I'm shocked they got him without having to trade up.

Gave up no future picks or any other picks to get him. Worthwhile gamble. Doesn't mortgage the future. I'm on board.

Based on that highlight package, if the Patriots get a bunch of receivers five yards behind the defense all season long, they just drafted the guy who can hit them.

I'm not convinced, but it sounds like a lot of posters are excited!

Be very interesting how he further develops but he’s good at decision making and gets the ball out quickly which is what Cam can’t do. To get one of the top 5 QBs without trading up is a bonus. Now let’s get the job done tomorrow and get another WR.

Half of those highlights are nice throws and half of them show why Waddle and Smith were taken before he was.

I love it. We know two things:

1. Saban and Belichick signed off on this; and
2. Belichick chose Jones over Fields.

Let’s fucking go.

Quick release, strong arm, apparently can read defenses. He looks a rough around the edges and a bit doughy - just hope he leaves behind the party life.

In the simulacrum
It is over thinking it to second guess this pick. Dude fell to 15 and is the best available option in the single biggest weakness the Pats currently have. This is an absolute gift at 15.

Let's go!

Credit to @Seabass177 for the initial post quoting PFF's take:

The narrative surrounding Mac Jones for the past few weeks was focused on whether he was worth not just the No. 3 overall pick, but the three first-round selections the 49ers invested in that draft slot. At No. 15 overall, it’s an entirely different conversation. Jones led the nation last season in overall PFF grade (95.8) and was the most accurate college quarterback in terms of adjusted completion rate (84.2%) PFF has seen. This is an outstanding pick.

BEST TIMING: MAC JONES
This is Jones’ calling card, as he thrives within the tempo of the offense. No one came close to Jones statistically on “in-rhythm throws.” His 97.6 passing grade, 13.4 yards per attempt and 152.5 passer rating on these plays led college football. Jones got the ball where it needed to go consistently for the Crimson Tide.

BEST VS. BLITZ: MAC JONES
Not that there was really any other way to slow down Alabama’s offense in 2020, but blitzing certainly didn’t work. Jones led college football in every single statistical category when blitzed last season: yards (1,365), touchdowns (18), yards per attempt (11.4) and completion percentage (77.5%). Maybe most impressively, Jones was only sacked three times on 124 blitzed dropbacks.

This is where I am at. He might be good, in which case they are in great shape for a stretch.

I think the current Pats offense is set up perfectly for someone like Jones.

A solid OL, get-out-of-jail cards in the 2 TEs Smith & Hunter, one of the best RB group in the league, and an OC who can scheme up plays for him.

Now let's get a young WR on day 2 to get more out of the slot.

He had almost four full seconds there...

I hope I am 100% wrong but I hate the pick. He shot puts his throws with no zip and had all world talent around him at Alabama, particularly on the OL and at receiver, which made his life very easy. I understand QB is a need but his ceiling IMO is a less accurate Chad Pennington (don't think Jones accuracy in college will translate to the pros, tighter windows means he can't loft balls in to his receivers).

I've spent the week listening to talking heads justifying SF picking Jones at 3, so getting him at 15 seems like a huge win to me.

Like the pick overall, but any weather concerns? Born in and went to high school in Jacksonville, and Alabama for college. Has he even played in temperatures below 60 or even seen snow? That's not something to be overlooked.

His teammates were not so subtle in praise of Jones when compared to Tua.

https://alabama.rivals.com/news/jaylen-waddle-devonta-smith-both-prefer-mac-jones-to-tua-tagovailoa

According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith was asked during January’s Senior Bowl which quarterback he preferred while at Alabama: Mac Jones or Tua Tagovailoa.

“The question was barely finished before Smith answered: Mac Jones,” Breer wrote. “He was bold and definitive about it, as I heard it. And of course, it’s logical to some degree.”

Wednesday, Alabama’s other future first-round receiver took his turn as Jaylen Waddle was asked the same question by NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano. Like Smith, Waddle sided with his most recent passer.

“I like Mac Jones,” Waddle said. “Both are great quarterbacks. I love Mac. He was a guy I came in with from Day 1. We were on the third team together and worked our way up.”

I'm pretty sure McDaniels worked him out in the freezer at Shamrock Meats.

Obviously BB liked him over Fields. A 3rd, even a 2nd to move up with Dallas would have been worth it if he valued Fields over Mac
There is zero reason to think that would be enough... it would probably have been closer to what the Giants gave up.

Hopefully the have him spend a year on building out his body and adding strength.

I like the pick because there was nothing on the board that really enticed me, it was either Mac or a trade down. He might be the 4th QB taken, but I think a solid argument can be made that Jones was BPA at that point, and that coupled with QB being their biggest need makes this a no brainer. Would've rather they had traded up for Fields, but this is a good consolation prize.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
There are a few reasons I could talk myself into this pick: Jones is a quick processor, brings very good accuracy, and he does conjure images of Tom Brady in the way he moves in the pocket (some would also say they have similar body types). But his lack of overall arm strength and athletic tools could cap his ceiling. Jones has just 17 total starts under his belt and may need a strong support system around him to excel at the next level. But in a smartly coached scheme under Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels, he should benefit from a near-ideal landing spot.

A guy can only play with the teammates he has. Burrow had Chase/Jefferson/Edwards-Helaire. Not going to fault someone for performing at a high level with great teammates. There’s a lot of talent in NE too.

Not worried about the body at all unless he is unwilling to work as a pro. Maybe there is some untapped upside tied to getting in better shape.

You said the same thing in the game thread. There is a HUGE value difference from where the Pats were to where the Bears were. You can't take those trades in a vacuum. Unless you think the difference from 10 to 12 that cost a third but 10 to 15 was a first/fourth/fifth

Fuck it.

Based on his strengths...why not?

Did he have an embarrassment of riches in Alabama? Sure. But his ability to make timing throws is a plus, regardless of the talent around him. Yes. Its easier to time a dude pushing off his outside foot on a post with a bunch of space (like he saw at 'Bama).

The strength can still transfer to shorter option and timing routes at the NFL level with less separation.

ESPECIALLY with the TEs we have (and hopefully we can get a successful slot WR also).

I'm mad we didnt go for Fields. But...well, this is my line in the sand for, "In BB we trust." I've ALWAYS deferred to his knowledge. You fuck up one of the best picks youve ever had? When Fields is there for the taking?

Lots riding on this pick.

And people keep forgetting that he played AGAINST elite competition too.

vs. #5 Tex A&M: 20-27 (74.1%), 435 yds, 4 td, 1 int
vs. #9 Georgia: 24-32 (75.0%), 417 yds, 4 td, 1 int
vs. #7 Florida: 33-43 (76.7%), 418 yds, 5 td, 1 int
vs. #4 Notre Dame: 25-30 (83.3%), 297 yds, 4 td, 0 int
vs. #3 Ohio State: 36-45 (80.0%), 464 yds, 5 td, 0 int

Total: 5 g, 138-177 (78.0%), 2,031 yds, 11.5 y/a, 22 td, 3 int

Against some of the best teams in the country.

Bedard has nursed the BSJ website back online:

15. Patriots: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama.
Things couldn’t have fallen much better for the Patriots. I think this was the third QB they had rated on their board this high — I believe they only had three in the top 15 — and Jones fits what they do perfectly. He should be able to compete Day 1.

Like Smith and Waddle, I liked him more than Tua. I'm not overly excited but if BB thinks this kid can play than I trust it. Almost every mock I did the last week the first 2 picks for the Pats were Mac Jones and Elijah Moore. Wouldn't hate if that came to fruition.
