But can they move Mata to the 60 day IL? Wouldn't that mean the 60 day clock begins again? I know they shut him down from his rehab but is there any indication that he's going to out that long? I'd love to see it happen but I know the union can get involved in such things if teams aren't straightforward in how they deal with injuries.

The clock is based on when he was first put on the IL, not the date he's added to the 60-day list. Since he's already over 60 days on the IL, in theory he could be moved to the 60-day today and then activated from the IL tomorrow (though he's not ready to be activated at all from what I can tell).

I know Mata's eligible for another rehab assignment, but I'm skeptical that even with a good showing he'll be a viable ML piece at this point. Maybe if he had some time in the minors to get his feel back. . .but he hasn't been competitive at all since 2022.

Yes, NY just did this with DJ LeMahieu a few weeks ago, moved him to the 60 day IL which was backdated over 60 days, and activated him a few days later.

Worth signing Biggio? He's not been good at the plate for a few years now, but he was just DFA'd and should be available. Even though his bat hasn't been good, he is still - in limited games and at-bats - producing + bWAR. Like, even this year, as he's hitting .200/.323/.291/.614, 80 ops+, he's still given Toronto 0.4 bWAR in 44 games. Which obviously isn't great, but +0.4 bWAR is more than the following guys have given Boston this year:

Yoshida (0.2)
Casas (0.2) - not saying he's better than Casas, obviously
Story (0.2)
Dalbec (-0.3)
Smith (-0.4)
Valdez (-0.5)
Grissom (-0.6)
Reyes (-0.8)
Cooper (-0.9)

So he'd actually represent an upgrade over a bunch of guys on the team who have played a considerable amount.

It's an intriguing idea given all the injuries and the potential upgrade in the short-term. On the other hand, the primary positions he covers (though he's played everywhere) are where they have a plethora of young players that need playing time (when healthy) in order to develop into viable major league players. Is given Biggio playing time over the likes of Valdez or Grissom worth stalling their trajectories if the gain is a win?

I think as a healthy body who can be a jack of all trades bench player (so ostensibly replacing a Westbrook), he could be worth the flier. If the idea is he can be plugged in at 2B and upgrade the starting lineup, I'm not so sure the short term upside is worth the possible long term detriments.

1) He's Romy Gonzalez.

2) What makes you think this coaching group will do anything to resurrect his bat instead of killing it off entirely?

Heh. I don't know, man. I'm just looking at this utterly devastated roster and think, well, he's not good, but he's better than half the guys they put out on the field these days. And he'd cost nothing.

Biggio's primary position is 2B and there are developing players that probably should be getting playing time there. That said, Grissom's is dealing with his second hammy IL stint so at least in the short term he might be a LH hitting platoon option there. My two biggest question concerning Biggio are A) how good is he defensively in RF and at the two CI spots? And B) Do the Sox need another LH hitter in those slots?

This discussion of Biggio brings me back to my point about picking up Harold Ramirez, who was DFA'd by the Rays yesterday. Right handed bat, corner OF and 1B.

A year ago the guy could hit. Perfect Fenway swing. (He murdered us last season.)

I know we can't pick up and drop every dude that comes available, but he's got to be better than Dalbec and the fetid corpse of Garrett Cooper.

Initially I also looked at Ramirez as a player that should be considered. RH with occasional power and hits for a decent avg. His career slash is .287/.325/.408, including his b-ref page for further scrutiny.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ramirha02.shtml

On the surface I think that I would prefer him to Cooper who has given the Sox nothing, but one part of that linked article that sticks in my head is... "He’s played both outfield corners and first base in the big leagues but is considered a defensive liability at all three spots. The Rays have used him primarily as a designated hitter."

There's a value that Dalbec has that Cooper and Ramirez do not have, and that's that he can be optioned when he's not needed. As much as we're frustrated by his anemic bat (yesterday notwithstanding), he's just not going to be replaced on the roster by a veteran retread with no options. At least not this season. Next year, when Dalbec becomes one of those unoptionable spare parts, all bets are off but my assumption is he will be gone anyway.

Ramirez might be an upgrade over Cooper at the plate, assuming a change of scenery is what he needs to get on track (no guarantees there). Defensively though, Ramirez would be a downgrade. There's a reason the Rays deployed him at DH more than any other spot, after all. Of course, the Sox could use a DH presently so maybe that's his in. All depends on what kind of confidence they might have in his regaining his 2022-23 form.

Masa is also expected back shortly, so it's not like we'll even have room for a primary DH for more than a week or so.

I'm not against upgrading by any means, but this sort of fix-em-when-they-get-here mentality has borne no fruit.
What I’m saying is that even if they don’t “fix” him, he’s still better than a bunch of guys who have received substantial numbers of plate appearances for Boston.

Nitpicking a little, but not "literally" every day. "Seemingly" would work, or maybe you were using "literally" figuratively ;)

The other issue with Ramirez/Biggio is cost. Each one would carry a pro-rated salary of $2.5M to $3M if claimed. Add in that DFAing Cooper would cost another $1M (assuming he isn’t claimed by another team) and you’re looking at $4M for a marginal and probably temporary upgrade.

Unless you wait for either player to be released and sign them as free agents. In which case they cost the pro-rated league minimum. Frankly, I think that's the only reasonable way to approach acquiring either of them. You don't want to negotiate a trade or win a waiver claim because, as you say, the cost likely doesn't justify the marginal/temporary upgrade (if it even amounts to an upgrade). Hell, it's questionable if even the pro-rated league minimum is worth the potential but by no means guaranteed upgrade.

Yeah this is what I’m thinking. If he becomes available this way then why not? If he doesn’t, oh well, no harm, no foul.

Injury updates from the Glob:
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/06/09/sports/red-sox-bello/

Rafael Devers exited Saturday’s contest with pain in his left knee, the same one that sidelined him earlier in the season with a bone bruise. Cora gave him a day off Sunday with the hope that he will be back in the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Phillies at Fenway. “Hopefully [the off day will help] and he’ll be back in there on Tuesday."
Tyler O’Neill (knee inflammation) felt better Sunday. It’s still to be determined if he will be ready for Tuesday. Wilyer Abreu (ankle sprain) is progressing rapidly, Cora said. Abreu ran sprints at Fenway Saturday.
Masataka Yoshida got through Saturday’s game for Worcester without incident. He hit in the designated hitter spot again Sunday, going 0 for 3 with a walk and two strikeouts. The Sox hope to have Yoshida back by the end of the week and will meet with him Monday to see where he is in his progression.
Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) and Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) hit Saturday at Fenway. The Sox are optimistic that Gonzalez will begin a rehab stint Tuesday while Grissom is still some time away.
Triston Casas (rib cage strain) hoped to begin swinging a bat this week. But Cora noted that Casas is still feeling pain and is still just taking ground balls.

This could go in a bunch of places, but apparently Trevor Story has been mentoring Mayer: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/boston-red-sox/news/red-sox-marcelo-mayer-trevor-story-advice/f55a9d8e8884a01ddf2c66c1

Which is really good to hear. What a guy.

It makes me wonder if some of the better regarded/skilled players on the IL shouldn't be encouraged to head up to Portland or over to Wor as quasi-coaches/instructors? Obviously, they wouldn't have to, but with the right fit, I think someone like Story could really help some of our developing players.

While Mayer says the relationship goes back to last year when Story was rehabbing, I imagine it was cemented at the mini infield camp that Story ran last winter. As frustrating as it is to have Story miss so much time to injury, that he's embracing such a mentorship role for the young players is great to see.

Mayer didn't attend Storyville this winter because he was rehabbing.

Some good news on the injury front. Abreu should start his rehab in the coming days. Anticipating one or two games tops. Romy should also be back soon, he played yesterday in Worcester. And Chris Martin is targeting a return for the Blue Jays series. Grissom is taking grounders, Casas still targeting July 2nd.

Per his interview during the game last night, he has started swinging. Not hitting but swinging.
Not exactly, he said he was doing the swinging motion, but wasn't allowed to use a bat yet.

I sure hope he progresses quickly to the point where he can swing, then start hitting on a tee, then actually take BP..... but there's a lot to do still.

The swinging motion is empty handed. He was talking about going though all of the motions without the bat and at the same time trying to figure out exactly how the injury could have happened. He also commented on the fact that in the weight room guys push around 400-500 lbs and yet ATM he can't even swing a bat that weighs roughly 2 lbs.
