He isn't passing him until next year, and if LAL hits on a top FA and makes a trade, their season could look very different. And perhaps a warmer reception than were it to happen this year
He could also have been shipped off by then.

Who says no to LeBron for Kevin Love (plus some salary ballast)?

It will be hilarious when the Lakers trade him to the Knicks for the ammo to complete an Anthony Davis trade and then add Kawhi and Harris in free agency.

If Magic pulls that off my respect for him as a GM will increase exponentially.

If the Lakers don't want LeBron, I'll take him for Kyrie, especially if KI is leaving anyways. I'd slot him in Morris' spot, and the Celtics would make the Finals the next two or three seasons.

Unfortunately that deal couldn't work. For Boston Kyrie's outgoing trade value is his 2019 salary. If Irving and Durant didn't mind teaming up with Hayward you could do Hayward for James and hope that Irving and 24/7 will agree to leave via a sign & trade so that Boston gets that $21 million TPE to add talent around James.

If Kyrie opted in for the purpose, the Cs would have to add only around $7m to get to within 75% of LeBron's. IIRC, FA signees for money matching purposes count at 50 percent of the dollar value of the contract. So an opted in Kyrie and Morris at around $14m a year would work.

Free agents whose pay goes up by more than a quarter count for the higher of 50% of their new salary or their salary of the previous year. I doubt that anyone’s paying Morris $14 million and Irving isn’t going to be opting in.

Agreed on Kyrie, but why won't Morris get 14? I'll be surprised if he doesn't get that.

He’s turned back into a pumpkin. Playoff teams will probably like him as a depth player, but he hasn’t been a very good starter after his early season play. I’ll be surprised if he gets more than MLE money.

Agreed, but he has a chance to reinvent himself on both ends in the playoffs though. His ability to slow (not shut) down even Lebron surprised me at times last season, and he could get hot again from deep...though he seems a step slow right now and a repeat of either does seem unlikely.

Lonzo jumping to Nike?
On Saturday night, Lonzo posted an Instagram picture where the caption reads: “Moving on to bigger and better #MyOwnMan.”

The picture he posted shows his jersey in the rafters at Staples Center and reads: “It’s only a crazy dream until you do it.” That is the tagline of a recent Nike ad campaign centered around Serena Williams.

Lonzo’s Instagram and Twitter profile pictures were also changed to a childhood photo of himself wearing a Nike t-shirt.
In addition to the Instagram post, Lonzo appears to have deleted all social media posts involving Big Baller Brand and his father.

Wonder how a contract now will compare to what he was offered around the draft.

So Lonzo vs. the rest of the family is a great storyline, one that will have a lot of media mileage.

Gotta love Jerry West literally laughing out loud at the Lakers:
Shortly after the trade deadline, Clippers consultant Jerry West -- who spent more than 40 years with the Lakers as a player, coach and executive -- got together for dinner with old friends who also had former Laker ties, sources said. He couldn't believe how Zubac fell into his lap. The Clippers, sources said, never even called the Lakers to inquire about Zubac. The Lakers made the offer and the Clippers gladly accepted.

Sources said those at the dinner table shared a hearty laugh at the Lakers' expense.

I'd forgotten that Rondo spit in Chris Paul's face in that season opener. Or maybe he didn't. The world may never know, even after a Zapruder-Film-level analysis.

Hahahahahahahaha

"I almost look at Bullock and Muscala, my hope is, much like [Julian] Edelman was," Pelinka says [...] "It's just one player, but that can have such a big impact on overall chemistry and I hope those two guys can come in and have that impact."

Ah geez -- that's amazing from Pelinka.

There's a thing on youtube contrasting Magic and Jerry West talking that hilariously exposes how vapid and ego-filled Magic is (and I say that as a great admirer of Magic the player...but as a GM he is the classic ex-jock who doesn't get changes in the game).

edit: here's the youtube video -- best part is West talking about how you don't brag on yourself if you're going to succeed...followed by Magic bragging on his moves getting the Lakers ready for the year.

Even as a Laker hater this couldn't have gone better for me.

He better pass Kobe on the road for all time scoring.

I am going to laugh manically when Magic takes Cassius Winston this year with the 11. Not because I think Winston is bad. (he is undersized but I could see him as an IT type of PG) but like IT his defense will be awful, and Ball will be a wasted pick.

Thanks for posting. I had no idea that PG's agent also reps Russell and Randle. No wonder he didn't even take a meeting with LAL.
Also (partially) explains why Morris and Rozier get so much run. Danny does a decent job of keeping agents happy, and those things matter.

He didn’t take a meeting with anyone. He found over the course of the year that he liked the OKC area and elected to stay.

It’s not like the Lakers had stapled DAR to the bench or anything. They gave him two years to show, and when he didn’t they sent him to a team that would give him lots of pre-free agent run.

Lonzo filing suit against the family friend/business partner that allegedly embezzled from BBB and Lonzo:
Los Angeles Lakers guard Lonzo Ball filed suit late Tuesday night against the former co-founder and manager of Big Baller Brand, Alan Foster, for damages of more than $2 million plus interest, alleging that Foster "conspired to embezzle millions of dollars and then divert those funds for his personal use, including to acquire assets in Ethiopia."

In court documents obtained by ESPN, which were filed electronically on Tuesday night in Los Angeles Superior Court and expected to be processed Wednesday morning, Ball alleges that "shortly after his release from prison, Foster embarked on his plan to target Ball and his family" and then "fleeced them of millions of dollars" by "creating a variety of corporate entities in which he gave himself ownership interests and managerial control."
Foster filed the paperwork to create BBB by changing the name of an existing company, NeXT Catch LLC, and assigning himself a role of managing member, with a provision that states that "title to assets to be held in the company's name or the name of any nominee the manager may designate." That operating agreement, which was obtained by ESPN, was signed by Lonzo Ball, LaVar Ball, Tina Ball and Foster.
The suit alleges that Foster never informed Ball or his family of his criminal past; and that months before meeting the family, Foster had his parole revoked -- and was sentenced to an additional five months in prison -- because he could not show he was compliant with the conditions of his parole to "not engage in any business involving investment, asset management or protection, or any other business involving the protection of funds."

Ball also alleges that Foster arranged for at least eight loans with financing fees of nearly $950,000 to be taken out by Ball or another entity owned by Ball, Family Always Matters LLC, from "non-traditional lenders" that "included exorbitant financing charges that were paid in whole or in part to Foster without Ball's knowledge."

When Ball confronted Foster about these concerns about his conduct, the suit alleges that Foster responded by "threatening to publicly disseminate false and misleading information concerning Ball and his family."
The “non-traditional lenders” part sounds pretty bad. But beyond the fraud and misappropriation of funds, Lonzo wants to blame the whole BBB venture on Foster:
After Ball declared for the NBA draft, the suit alleges that Foster "persuaded Ball that it would be in his best financial interest to form his own company and his own brand of apparel and merchandise rather than aligning himself with established brands that had expressed substantial interest in signing Ball to lucrative endorsement deals."

I’m glad that Lonzo is a wealthy man regardless, so that I can just enjoy the schadenfreude of his and his family’s douchiness coming back to bite him while his basketball career falls apart because he only wants to play in LA.

lol...and note Magic said that was the lesson he drew from Houston, too -- i.e, the team that is #1 in 3 pointers attempted this year and last (probably before that, too).

hmmmm....

Nobody in ghe Avengers thread responded to this, but I think a great after credits scene would be some young Lakers laughing it up in the locker room when Lebron rematerializes, and they all stop laughing and reluctantly welcome him back.
